Everyone has a DIY disaster story – the time you almost fell off the roof while replacing a broken tile, the time you painted yourself into a corner re-oiling the outdoor deck.
In fact, there are so many of them plumbing supplier Reece has a website where tradies can upload photos of the dodgy work they see in people’s houses. But while it might make for a funny anecdote at your next barbecue, in the worst case a bad DIY job can jeopardise the structural integrity of your home (as well as looking terrible). On page 8 we have some advice for those thinking of renovating their own bathroom, and speaking of mistakes, this month’s cover story looks at the most common ones home renovators make. Turn to page 4.

WORDS JARNA BAUDINETTE
A home renovation is a big project, and if you get it wrong there can be dire
consequences. We’ve compiled this list of some of the biggest – and most common – mistakes people make when renovating their homes. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
OVERCAPITALISINGThis refers to spending a lot of money on a renovation that doesn’t add value to your home. While you may be planning to live in your home for many years, you still need to be mindful of its value and whether you will be able to recoup the cash you’ve spent improving it. If you do decide to sell down the track your home will be compared to similar properties on the market, so do some research around your area beforehand to see if comparable homes are worth the amount you’re planning to spend.
FAILNG TO PREPThis goes for all areas of the renovation – budgeting, measuring, styling and so on. Don’t rush into a large project without taking the time to plan what the result will look like, and how you’re going to get there. This involves plenty of research, so if you’re not particularly detail-oriented fi nd a qualifi ed builder who can manage the project for you.
GUTTING EVERYTHINGUnless you live in a knock-down shack from the ’60s, it is likely your home has plenty of existing features that can be incorporated into your renovation. But often when people decide to renovate they can become so caught up with the prospect of a ‘brand-new’ space they fail to recognise their home’s hidden gems. Don’t

just get rid of everything – before you start planning your renovation, take the time to thoroughly inspect your home for any decorative plaster work, kitsch light fi ttings or lovely wooden window and door frames you can incorporate into the makeover. This will save money and add character to your renovated home.
GOING TOO ‘MODERN’Trends come and go, so keep this in mind when designing your interior. While you may want to splurge for the latest trends and styles, be mindful you’ll be living in the home for years, and what’s popular right now might seem passé down the track. Where you can, opt for a neutral colour scheme (especially in the kitchen and bathroom) and stick to classic, stylish fi xtures and fi ttings that won’t date. Then you are free
to incorporate the latest colour and style trends by updating your homewares and accessories as often as you like.
RENOVATING ON THE CHEAPThere are plenty of ways to save money while renovating, and this can often involve picking up good-quality fi xtures, fi ttings and materials at bargain prices. However, the emphasis here should always be on quality – don’t choose low-grade materials just because they are cheap. While low-cost buys might help your renovation come in under budget, you’ll end up spending much more in the long term as you’ll just have to replace these in the future. Opt for middle-of-the-range fi xtures and fi ttings and always listen to the advice of your tradespeople when it comes to quality.
CHOOSING THE WRONG TRADESPEOPLEIf you’ve received quotes from a number of tradespeople and are having diffi culty choosing between them, it can be tempting to save money by just going for the cheapest one. However, like materials and fi xtures, choosing the right people for the job is crucial to a long-lasting renovation. We tend to be choosy when picking doctors, hairdressers and mechanics, and the same should go for choosing a builder or plumber – your home is your biggest fi nancial asset and it is worth investing in a professional fi nish. If you choose your tradespeople based on their reputation and the quality of their previous work, rather than lower costs, you’re far more likely to be pleased with their performance and with the
result. But this doesn’t mean you should accept a quote that seems too high – be sure to check and discuss costs with your chosen builder, and get a second opinion if you’re worried you are being overcharged.
NOT ANTICIPATING DELAYSWhile you need to have a budget and time line, you also need to be aware that various factors might upset your carefully planned schedule. Delays can be caused by bad weather, material shortages and many other things out of your control. A renovation often resembles organised chaos, and while it pays to have a plan in place try not to become too much of a control freak – make sure you have regular, open communicaton with your tradespeople and try not to panic if things don’t go exactly according to plan.

Vanity fl airDreaming of a DIY bathroom?
As it is the major wet area in the house the bathroom is one room where quality construction and fi nishes are crucial, so perhaps think again.
The Building Code of Australia has strict guidelines for waterproofi ng residential bathrooms and it’s a good idea to check with the council to see if the work has to be done by a licensed contractor. Inadequate waterproofi ng can result in a build-up of moisture or outright water leakage, which can cause bulging plaster and rotting timber.
Play by the rulesTHE BUILDING CODE OF AUSTRALIA HAS STRICT GUIDELINES
FOR WATERPROOFING RESIDENTIAL BATHROOMS.
You should attempt your own waterproofi ng at your own peril – unless you have considerable patience, skill and time, it is probably best to leave this part of your renovation to a professional (you’ll need a registered contractor to carry out any plumbing as well).
But if your bathroom just needs some sprucing there are plenty of ways you can DIY. Replacing cracked or broken tiles is relatively easy, and if you have good attention to detail you can attempt larger areas. You can also swap old fi ttings for new ones, install fl at-pack cabinets and tidy up old, tired paint.

Kidding aroundIf you are repainting as part
of your renovation and love experimenting with colour, a child’s bedroom is the perfect place to have some fun. If your children are old enough you can involve them in colour selection, but remember always choose a long-wearing, washable paint.
Blues, greens and light pinks are calming tones, so are a good choice for rooms where children will be playing and sleeping. In contrast, too much orange or red may overstimulate little ones, so to tone it down paint just one wall in a vibrant shade, or opt for two-tone
Remember those……GLOW-IN-THE-DARK STARS YOU HAD ON YOUR CEILING AS A KID? YOU CAN NOW BUY GLOW-IN-THE-DARK PAINT.
walls with a darker colour on the bottom and a lighter one on top. If you’re artistic you can paint bright geometric shapes, fi gures or even a mural, and if you don’t know one end of a paintbrush from the other there are easy stencils and removable wall stickers.
Remember those glow-in-the dark stars you had on your ceiling as a kid? These days you can buy glow-in-the-dark paint (but be mindful, it might keep your kids awake!) and blackboard paint, which you can apply to a section of the wall to create a ready-made drawing surface.

Polish offIf you’re a fan of contemporary industrial
style and want to incorporate this into your renovation, polished concrete fl oors might be the perfect choice. Traditionally only found in driveways and garages, the humble residential concrete fl oor has come a long way, with glossy, mirror-like fi nishes now available for interiors.
If your home has an existing concrete slab lurking underneath carpet or tiles this can be polished. Rather than just applying surface coat or overlay, concrete polishing involves mechanically grinding back, treating and fi nishing the concrete itself, using what is called diamond technology. There are some requirements around the thickness and quality of your existing slab, so speak to a concrete professional about the necessary tests.
FLOORING

April 27, 2012 \ My Renovation 13
To dye forIF YOU ARE POURING A NEW SLAB AS PART
OF YOUR RENOVATION YOU ALSO HAVE THE OPTION OF EXPERIMENTING WITH COLOUR.
You can hire machinery for the job, but be aware that grinding concrete is a messy, time-consuming task, and if you’re inexperienced it is best left to an expert. As with any fl oor covering the cost depends on the fl oor area and fi nish, so measure the room before asking for a quote.
If you already have a concrete slab you can choose from a variety of fi nishes ranging from satin to high-gloss. There are also non-slip fi nishes suitable for outdoor and pool areas. If you are pouring a new slab as part of your renovation you also have
the option of experimenting with colour. There are different cement colours available, and some manufacturers offer vibrant dyed varieties – you can also potentially dye your existing slab, though this treatment is not usually UV-resistant and can fade easily. With a new slab you also have the option of adding stones or minerals for decorative effect.
If you’re happing with your current fl oor surface but still want to incorporate the industrial look, why not opt for a polished concrete benchtop in the kitchen or bathroom.

Night lightsPlanning for your renovated home to be an
entertainer’s delight? Don’t forget to spruce up your outdoor area with new lighting. There are a range of options for lighting your external spaces, and your choices will depend on the size and shape of your backyard.
LED lights are the best choice for outdoors as they are much more energy effi cient and long lasting than other varieties, and so are well suited to areas where the lights are be turned off for long periods of time. For your entertaining area you can choose decorative lights which display pretty soft patterns on the walls, or opt for a stylish LED outdoor lamp for the table centrepiece. If there are steps down to the garden, pop some LED strip lighting on each one to illuminate your guests’ path.

Work with the……AREA’S NATURAL SHADOWS AND PLACE BOLLARDS OR SPOTLIGHTS AROUND ANY
FEATURES YOU’D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT.
In the backyard itself try not to go overboard with different light sources. Work with the area’s natural shadows and strategically place bollards or spotlights around any features you’d like to highlight. If you have tall trees, consider mounting fl oodlights pointing back towards the house, which will give the whole backyard an illuminating glow.
Also consider whether your property needs any security lighting, especially at the front of the home. Sensor lights are a popular choice, and it is a good idea to install these under
your home’s awnings to protect the light from wind and rain. To cut back on installation costs you can also have a separate sensor that links to three or four lights around the exterior of your building.
Regardless of the type of light, if you live close to the beach remember you need fi xtures and fi ttings that are able to withstand the salt air. Choose the highest grade of stainless steel you can afford, or opt for a more contemporary anodised aluminium variety, which suffers less weather damage and is more affordable.

Rock onIf your existing kitchen is looking a bit
daggy, you may fi nd all it needs is a new bench surface. For a sleek, contemporary look you really can’t go past clean white or timber cabinetry, paired with granite or natural stone benchtops.
Long associated with luxury and opulence, granite is perfect for use in a wet area such as the kitchen because it is virtually impervious to water, scratches and stains. However, granite has earned its luxury reputation for a reason – it is by far one of the priciest options when it comes to bench surfaces.
If you love the look but not the price tag, you can still opt for an engineered stone product such as Caesarstone quartz, which is a more contemporary and affordable choice. Quartz

is also strong, extremely durable, and very easy to clean – regularly wiping your quartz benches with a damp cloth and warm, soapy water is all you need to do to keep them looking great.
Each slab of natural stone is unique and features individual grains and fi ssures throughout, bringing an element of natural beauty to your space. Also, natural and engineered stone benchtops are available in a wide variety of colours to suit virtually any decorating scheme.
You will need to consider whether you want a polished or textured fi nish, and you will also
need to choose between a standard square, rounded or bullnose edge.
If your kitchen needs a little more love, consider installing splashbacks in the same stone behind the cooktop and sink. You can also have your existing cabinetry resprayed and add new door and drawer handles to go with your brand-new bench surface.
To minimise disruption make sure you order your new benchtops well in advance – that way the old benches can be removed and the new ones installed on the same day.

Hang aboutWhile the overall trend in interior design
seems to be leaning toward sleek, minimalist style, there are some areas of the home where you can be a bit lush. Window coverings are the perfect place to make a statement by indulging your love of rich fabrics and textures. New curtains are also an easy way to spice up any rooms your renovation has left untouched.
When it comes to dramatic curtains, the age-old classic would have to be fl oor-length drapes, which evoke cosiness and luxury and will instantly take your bedroom or formal living space from ho-hum to high-class. If you favour heavy, dramatic fabrics like velvet, bright colours can look over the top, so stay away from anything too vibrant and opt for a rich

brown or dark purple instead. Consider how your curtains
and upholstery will complement one another. Matching fabrics is a little tacky, but make sure your tones are within the same colour scheme and don’t clash with one another (the same goes for carpet if you have it). If the room already has a statement furniture piece – a unique couch or a huge wooden dining table, for example – consider a more understated fabric such as suede, which will look stylish in a neutral beige or caramel tone. If you want more drama, consider adding a tasselled sash
in a contrasting colour, or install creative hardware such as carved wooden or cast-iron rods.
For those who are not quite brave enough for velvet but still want something a little luxe, go for a sheer, gossamer-style covering in opaque white or smoke grey. These fabrics give the room a dreamy, whimsical feel, and are perfect matched with timber fl oors and rustic, country-style decor. While they don’t give as much coverage as heavy curtains they will still offer privacy, and some are beautifully patterned or even feature hand-sewn feather

Play timeMost of us have fond childhood memories of
playing in the backyard. For little ones, the yard can provide hours of and adventure, but when renovating our homes we can focus too much on adult concerns – such as the size of the entertaining area or how often we’ll need to mow the lawn – and end up with a space that is boring for children. Designing a backyard that encourages play is a great way to keep kids safe and occupied on weekends and during holidays.
The key to creating a child-friendly backyard is to ensure it has plenty of variety. Kids have short attention spans, so one set of swings probably won’t keep them occupied for long. If you’re looking at investing in some infrastructure, the classic combination of swing set, sandpit and cubbyhouse is always a good

choice. Ensure these pieces are constructed with good-quality timber and have no sharp edges or removable pieces, and for safety reasons always have a professional build them (unless you’re particularly handy). Remember it’s always safest to keep a cubbyhouse at ground level, and invest in a sandpit cover to protect it from rain and leaves when it’s not being used.
Ask your local nursery for non-toxic plant varieties, as children are often tempted to put fl owers in their mouths. If you have the space, consider investing in a small climbing tree
– this should be selected based on both the strength of the timber and its resistance to disease. It may take a few years to grow, but with adequate supervision it can provide plenty of fun and exercise.
If you don’t have the budget or space for a mini-playground, use what you already have. Small brick feature walls are great for climbing and balancing on, and simply giving your lawn some contour can add interest. Speak to a landscape gardener about creating little mounds, slopes and hills for the kids to run around on.

Chemical freeThe backyard pool is a big part of many
Sunshine Coast homes, but with rising water and electricity costs, as well as ongoing maintenance, it can seem as though having a pool isn’t worth the trouble. With this in mind, many Australian companies are now offering low-maintenance, eco-friendly pools.
The simplest way to reduce your pool’s energy consumption is to switch to an energy-effi cient pool pump. These variable-speed pumps can cut back your pool’s electricity usage by up to 70 per cent, by running the pump at lower speeds for longer periods. The pumps can be programmed to cut back on maintenance and tend to be much quieter than traditional models.
If you are installing lighting in or around the pool opt for energy-effi cient LED varieties, and

Make the changeIF YOU HAVE A CHLORINE-BASED POOL,
LOOK INTO CONVERTING TO A MORE ECO-FRIENDLY VERSION.
if you need to heat your pool over winter consider solar heating rather than electric.
Any decent-sized pool will need a lot of water, which can evaporate quickly under the hot Queensland sun. Pool covers aren’t as daggy as they used to be – these days you can buy a stylish, patterned aqua cover that could prevent 97 per cent of water evaporation (and keep leaves and insects out).
In the past, maintaining a backyard pool involved plenty of harsh, expensive chemicals. Saltwater pool systems lessen the need for these, however you
will need to keep a close eye on the pH level – saltwater pools are more prone to fl uctuations which need to be corrected as soon as possible to prevent contamination.
Recently there has been a focus on eco-friendly living, and there are now a number of chemical-free pool fi ltration systems. These use copper, silver and other minerals to clean the pool water and can substantially reduce the need for chlorine. If you have a chlorine-based pool, look into converting to a more eco-friendly version as part of your renovation.
