Evaluation the role of strategic planning towards sustainable urban
neighborhood
Significance of Study and Problem Statement During the last decades, urban population has been rapidly increased due to urbanization
in developing countries. When the growth is rapidly increasing, the city will confront new
problemssuch as “disease, polit ical conflicts, and developed nat ions have to deal with issues such as
“infrastructure deterioration, pollution, and unlimited urban expansion with limited resourc es”as well
(Jaspar, 2008; Mensah& Castro, 2004). In the previous decades, cities had distinguished and defined
boundaries, however they have lost their realms by extremely growth rate today (Habibi&Asadi, 2011).
Aim, Objectives, Research Questions and Hypothesis The key aim of this study follows to identify the possibility to adopt the strategic planning method in the
modern urban neighborhood development to achieve new urban neighborhood areas by considering
sustainability concept and principles.
Accordingly, the man objectives of this research are:
- Understanding the characteristics and elements of the sustainable neighborhood
- Understanding the concept of strategic planning in urban design
- Assessing the current development method of urban neighborhood
- Finding out the problems of contemporary urban neighborhood development method
- Discussing problems of achieving sustainable neighborhood
- Finding out the new approach for future development of neighborhoods by using strategic urban
planning process.
Based on the main aim and objectives, the following question as main question of this study will be
answered:
1. How can strategic planning be useful to achieve sustainable urban neighborhood?
In the following there is one hypothesis for the study:
Strategic planning process can be used to solve contemporary issues related to the urban design and
planning towards achieving sustainable neighborhood.

Exhibition of Architectural project model Amphibious ‘BoaTEL’ chalet unit
Aug. 2010
The title of this exhibition echoes an open attitude towards embracing the different levels of thought processes, therefore enables a mixture of different expressions and different levels of architectural thinking without being judgmental about the works. The audience too would come with different levels of expectations and preferences, and would be drawn to different exhibits. Being purely aesthetic and offered without explanations, the audience is invited to evoke their own imagination to speculate on the individual works.
JOINT THIRD PRIZE

3rd year, University of Putra, Malaysia
Azadi Square
Set in Tehran’s Azadi Square, this imaginative and provocative project draws public attention to the scandal of last year’s Iranian
presidential election and the wave of protest and political activism that was sparked off in its wake. Jurors admired the scheme’s
strong urban design quality and the way in which the building captured, articulated and memorialised public discontent.

Preliminary massing proposal by senior architect
My proposal:
Site photos
To decrease the building footprint Reduce the need for cut ting trees and preserve the existing natural setting A real live-green environment within the site especially within the residential zone at the back of the development To propose a more cutting edge commercial block linked to the office towers and break away from conventional
row of shop offices

Tonal layering of the solar equatorial shine
Study or even practice in Malaysia, one would gather the idea that the sun must be avoided by all means. Too much
concentration on avoiding heat gain of the sun eventually deprives the Architecture from the benefits of day light. Although
theoretically it’s very much emphasized to apply natural resources it’s often compromised in practice.
Another factor which will usually be compromised accordingly is the magnificent view of lush wild green landscape which is
commonly found in this tropical environment, scenery that is pitifully blocked to minimize the openings hence not appreciated
to the fullest.
In this scheme I have intended to change the attitude of design by trying to give the floor maximum exposure to the
surrounding natural environment and benefit from natural air movement by cross ventilation to ease the cooling load and
daylight transmission to the inner depth of the working spaces through ambient reflection and multi directional refraction of
sun light from the faceted glass curtain walls throughout the building, to create the ambiance of experiencing a daily
workplace with its ever-changing traits by transformation of spaces through time and climatic conditions which develops a
special feeling through conditional interaction between the light and material. The effects which can integrate functional light
with light for pleasure where by the ‘tales of light’ are the manifestations of the poetry of spaces.
While working inside the polyhedron crystal-lattices, surrounded by trees, fresh air and occasionally rain dripping down the
protruding roof, the comfort zone is assured by having air-conditioned rooms, as for outside of the individual rooms the area
is naturally ventilated and day lighted. An atmosphere which is filtered where by the sun heat and glare is stopped by the
shades of the wide spread roof above and the cantilevered extension of floors staggered above. Though having the
transparent walls, maximum day light and natural ventilation is allowed which aesthetically and energy efficiently contributes
to the working environment and living conditions.
