Episode 19
Isaac leaned forward and dropped my dirty Hawaiian shirt
into my lap. “Wear this.”
I shakily eyed the guard’s trigger finger. “What’s going
on?”
“The watchmen recently passed a new rule I wasn’t aware
of,” eanette said. “White shirts represent purity. !asture
guests can’t wear them.”
The guard prodded my shoulder with the mu""le. “Wear it.
#ou don’t want the watchmen to see you in a white shirt.”
I slipped off $ather Hogan’s shirt.
The guard snatched it from me and threw it to the grass.
“I’m %eing nice. If ake were here, he’d ha&e ordered me to
shoot through the shirt.”
We went into the ca%in. The !asture inspector was typing
on the key%oard of Isaac’s laptop. I placed my cell phone on
the ta%le.
“I won’t %other to search the %ackpack,” the inspector
said, his %reath reeking of "onkers. “It’s going to rain, so
lea&e me and the computer alone and %e on your merry way.”
“#ou’re a %it misinformed again, old chap,” Isaac replied
in an assumed 'ritish accent. “The scattered clouds won’t
amount to much.”
The inspector finally looked up from the display screen.

“I can feel it in my %ones. If a drop of rain falls, I keep
your computer. (on&ersation o&er.”
Isaac turned to us, as if we could really do something.
He stuck his finger into his nose. “)lder $ong is rumored
to ha&e died from alcohol poisoning.”
The inspector shook his head and frowned. “!eople will say
any flippin’ thing these days. )lder $ong showed all the
classic symptoms of a heart attack. I was right here when
Watchman $ong, ake, and the others carried him out. He was
pale and wasn’t %reathing right.”
The laptop %eeped.
“*cientists should e+tend the life of laptop %atteries,”
the inspector said, resuming his typing.
Isaac went around the ta%le and %ent to look at the screen.
“!lease don’t modify or delete any of my files.”
The inspector shut the lid. “I’m not &ery computer
literate. Things happen.”
The clim% up the earth cut steps didn’t go well with my
legs. I paused at the last tread, kneading my fists into my
-uadriceps and looking %ack as far as I could at the distance
I’d hauled myself up.
“I declare myself top dog in the stamina arena,” Isaac
panted.
“ o on without me,” I told the others.
“We’ll stay here as long as it takes,” eanette said.

I dropped my cargo pants and %egan slathering heat ru% on
my thighs. The %anana gro&e on our left rustled. Isaac uncased
his camcorder. / flock of parrots with red patches on their
necks started from the gro&e and flew o&er us. Their high
pitched cries mocked our ina%ility to follow them.
“*isserou0” Isaac yelled.
“Those are acos,” eanette said.
“I guess seeing aco !arrots is enough to sustain me for
one day,” Isaac said as he tracked the %irds through his
camcorder. “These ama"ing creatures are more sincere than most
women I know.”
I wanted to plant a solid kick on Isaac’s %ehind.
“/ll of a sudden I don’t feel like walking all the way to
the guest ca%in,” eanette said.
Isaac lowered the camcorder. “*urprise, surprise. We’re
going to (amp 'uckley with you.”

When we reached the gates of the camp, the sky had turned
gray and warned us with a %urst of light dri""le. ake stood at
the entrance. He checked his watch my watch.
“Why is my 2ole+ at (amp 'uckley?” I demanded.
“Three minutes to noon,” ake said.
“I ga&e my watch to Watchman Harper,” I said hotly.
ake walked off into the forest, muttering and laughing.
“I e+pect a good %ele performance tonight,” eanette said.

*he headed for )&e’s Temple.
Isaac watched her enter the %uilding. “3peration 2umor can
now %egin.”
“The !asture inspector didn’t look like he had anything to
hide,” I said. “What made him a target for 3peration 2umor?”
“I was throwing a red herring to eanette,” Isaac replied.
“4on’t underestimate her,” I said. “*he knows what she
knows and suspects what she suspects and won’t change her mind.”
/ dwarfish man with a machete in his hand entered the camp,
%rushing past Isaac.
“/pproach the first target,” Isaac whispered.
“There’s nothing wrong with him,” I whispered %ack.
“He’s walking without %ending his knees. That’s an
affected gait. I’&e ne&er seen a pygmy walk like that.”
“5ooks normal to me,” I responded.
Isaac threw up his hands. “ ust do it. $ind out a%out
*hepherd 'uckley’s demise also. We need a control for this
e+periment.”
“Is this an operation or an e+periment?”
“'oth.”
“It’s not going to work,” I said.
Isaac and 6ofi left (amp 'uckley. I followed the short man
to the door of /dam’s Temple.
“*ir0” I called out.
He opened the door.

“*ir0” I said again. “(an we talk for a second?”
He entered the anteroom and slammed the door. / group of
men scru%%ing the north wall of )&e’s Temple laughed. I walked
%ack to the gates.
“3ne down, a thousand to go,” I told 'ill.
/ngie hurried toward us from the direction of )&e’s Temple.
“I %et I can find out the identity of eanette’s email
%uddy from her sweet sister,” 'ill said.
“Isn’t that plan on the %ack%urner?” I asked.
He tapped his chest. “I got things under control.”
/ngie accosted us with a li&id face. “Why is my sister in
a %ad mood?”
“ imme that platinum smile,” 'ill said. “(o&er girls ne&er
get upset.
*he glared at 'ill, as if he were Isaac. The smudge of
liner around the tightened skin of her eyes meant she’d either
%een crying or hadn’t washed her face upon rolling out of %ed.
“Ha&e eanette come outside and &ent the rage out of her
system,” 'ill said. “Tell her Isaac isn’t with us.”
*he %lew out air. “What did he say to her? I’ll crucify
the fucker with my %are hands. Where is he?”
“3n second thought, lea&e eanette where she is,” I said,
not wanting to %e distracted from my mission %y her presence.
“*he needs some shut eye.”
'ill reached out for /ngie’s hand. “(ome on, co&er girl.

5et’s walk this !asture together.”
Her face rela+ed. “Where are we going?”
He pulled her close, his lips a couple inches from her ear.
“Where&er the 7ourney takes us. 5ondon, !aris, 2ome, or home.”
“To the *ource of 'lessings,” she said with some 7oy in her
&oice.
'ill winked at me. “We’ll %e right %ack after those
%lessings.”
They split %efore I could gi&e him a secret signal. I was
sure he forgot his wallet was condomless.
/ man and woman coming from the direction of 8nion Temple
%eelined for the gates, furiously sweeping their hands in the
air while talking to each other. When they got closer I still
couldn’t discern their words. They spoke low and in $rench
(reole kosher paranoid %eha&ior.
“'on7our, %on7our,” I said clearly.
They stopped at the gates. The man wore a pinstripe suit
and &iolet fedora hat, so naturally I pegged him as a reformed
pimp.
“#ou speak (reole?” the man asked me in )nglish.
“*pent my first twel&e years in 4ominica,” I answered in
(reole.
“9ate, that patois came out comical with your /merican
accent,” the woman said. “I don’t want to laugh at you, so we
should all speak )nglish.”

9y ego took a hit. “$ine with me.”
*he screwed up her face, as if she were a%out to cry. “If
he were ali&e today he’d %e preaching against /ngie’s morals.”
“They going to fornicate,” the man said. “He would ha&e
%lock /ngie and the pagan from lea&ing (amp 'uckley if he was
here flesh and %lood in the !asture.”
“How can you guys %e certain that /ngie and my roomie are
going to fornicate?” I asked.
The man shook his head. “That %eside the point. Watchman
'uckley too soft on her.”
“We know why,” the woman said.
“(are to share?” I asked.
The sun %urned a hole through the cloud co&er.
“He’s up there looking down on us in this camp,” the woman
said.
The man sighed and shuffled his feet. “They didn’t ha&e to
kill him.”
“They didn’t ha&e to,” she echoed.:::
