My native town is Shakhty. It is situated in Rostov region inthe south of Russia. Rostov region is famous for its developedindustry, rich agriculture and numerous cultural monuments.Shakhty was founded in 1867. It was given the name ofAlexandrovsk Grushevski. In 1920 the name was changed toShakhty.

More than 10 years ago the town was one of the largestindustrial centres of Rostov region. The main industry wascoal mining. But then most mines were closed. Engineering and food industries are developing now.

Shakhty is known for its cultural traditions. Many famous poets and writers lived and worked in it: Alexei Nedogonov, Pavel Nilin, Valentin Yushchenko. There is a drama theatre, a palace of culture, several clubs and a cinema hall in Shakhty. Everybody knows thePushkin Library and the Krupskaya Children`s Library.Thereare music- schools and a college in my town. The first music school was built in 1951.

Shakhty has good facilities for going in for sports: tennis- courts, a Palace of sports, a stadium, a lot of gyms and sports-grounds. My fellow towns are proud of V.Alexeev, G.Bessonov, D.Rigert, M.Logvinenko and other athletes. They have become Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalists and record - settlers in weight- lifting and shooting. The Shakhty Sports Palace was opened in 1956.

A lot of places of interest in my town are connected with the Great Patriotic War. The Memorial complex in the city park, the Krasin Memorial, the monument to Victory. 25 heroes of the Soviet Union lived in Shakhty.

There are a lot of general educational schools, colleges, higher technical educational establishments and a university in Shakhty.

The Shakhty Museum of regional studies can tell you a lot about the life and work of the town.
