I will be a confident and capable user of ICT
I know what I do and do not understand about the the technologies I use. I will get help where I need it. This means I will:
Ask for help when I do not understand from
• Teachers
• Classmates
• Family
• Friends
Understand that adults will supervise my use of ICT
Agree to tell and adult if I see something inappropriate
Student Digital Citizenship Agreement
Having a personal device at school is an important responsibility. When using my device at school I know it’s important to demonstrate the characteristics and behaviors of a good digital citizen.
I will use ICT for learning as well as other activities.
I understand that technology can help me to learn. I also know it can be used to talk to people, to buy and sell things and to have my
opinion heard. I know when and where it is OK to do each one.
This means I will:
Be honest and use ICT only for school activities whilst at school
Show respect for other people’s opinions and the way I communicate with others
I will think carefully about whether the information I see online is true.
I know that it is easy to put information online. This means that what I see is not always right. I will always check to make sure
information is real before I use it:
Recognise some sites are more reliable than others
Cross check my information by going to more than one site
Fact check
I will be able to speak the language of digital technologies.
When people talk online the things they say can be quite different from a conversation they might have if they were sitting next to each
other. I know that I must try to understand what people are saying before I react to them. If I am not sure, I can ask them or someone
else to explain.
This means I will:
Stop and THINK before I publish anything online
Publish only things I would be happy to share with EVERYONE including my parents and teachers
I understand that I may experience problems when I use technology but that I will learn to deal with them.
I understand that there will be times when technology may not work as I expected it to, or that people
may be mean or unkind to me online. When these things happen, I know that there are ways I can deal
with it. I also know there are people I can go to, to get help if I don’t know what to do next.
This means I will:
Stop and logout
Tell an adult immediately
I will always use ICT to communicate with others in positive, meaningful ways.
I will always talk politely and with respect to people online. I know that it is possible to bully or hurt people with what I say and do on the
internet. I will think about the effect that my actions have on other people.
This means I will:
Always treat others the way I would like to be treated
Not use technology to be mean, rude, or unkind about other people
Remember whatever I put online is there forever

• Stickers, labels and other custom touches can be put on the outside of my device (with parent permission) to help physically
identify my device from others.
• My device needs to be brought to school fully charged. Charges should be left at home.
• I will store my device in the required classroom lockable cupboards before school, as well as during break times.
• I need to remember to carry my device carefully - not by the screen, bend the screen right back or close the screen with
something inside it.
• I will take extra care with drink bottles and wet togs in school bags. Wherever possible I will keep these items separated.
• A suitable protective cover is necessary and my device should be taken to and from home inside my school bag for extra
protection.
• I will not allow others to use my device.
• My device should be insured by my parents/caregivers
• If my device is malfunctioning or damaged I will need to take it to a computer repairer. Opaheke School is unable to supply
technical services for student owned devices.
• Opaheke School (nor its staff or employees) is not liable for any device stolen
or damaged on campus.
Taking Care of a Personal Device at School
A device is an expensive item and therefore needs to be treated with care.
I will be honest and fair in all of my actions using ICT.
I will never do anything online that I know will hurt anyone. I will make sure what I do is not against the law. I will make sure that my
actions don’t break the rules of the websites that I use. When I am not sure about what I am doing I will ask for help.
This means I will:
Show respect and be truthful about what belongs to others
Make sure I obey the law and rules of websites I use
Know what I am legally allowed to belong to and to discuss any sign ups with my teacher or parent
Know what I am legally allowed to download
Look after our digital technology by not being silly
Tell a teacher if anything is wrong or damaged
Connect to the internet via our school’s Wi-fi. I will not use 3G or 4G
I will always respect people’s privacy and freedom of speech online.
I understand that some information is private. I will be careful when using full names, birthdays, addresses and photos of other people
and of my own. I also know that I will not always agree with what people say online but that does not mean that I can stop them or
use it as an excuse to be unkind to them.
Have a ‘strong’ password
Protect my usernames and passwords and not give them to others except my parents and teachers
Ask permission before I use names and photos
Check with an adult before giving personal information (name, address, email, birthdate, phone numbers, photos)
I will help others to become a better digital citizen.
Being a good digital citizen is something that we all have to work at. If I know that my friends are having problems online, I will try to
help them. If I see that someone is being unfairly treated online then I will speak up rather than just watch it happen.
Always do my best to be an active digital citizen
Stand up for others who may be treated unfairly online
Speak to an adult about it

Extra Information for Parents Here are some tips for parents that we have gathered from our experiences so far.
When choosing a device please consider the following:
Minimum 4GB RAM
Minimum 64GB HDD or SSD
Windows 10
10” to 15” (11” devices are easiest for our students to manage)
5 to 6 hours of battery life
Sub 3 minute start up time
Up-to-date antivirus
Agreement
• It is always easier to have an agreement on how the device is to be used before starting rather than discussing
when problems arise. Talk to your child about how much time will be spent on the device each day, where it is
to be used, how it is to be used, storage etc.
• Homework only? Or can it be used for games at home? “I am just….’ is a common explanation from students.
Homework shouldn’t take longer with a device. Are they really working or playing?
Location
• Using the device in a public space e.g. lounge, kitchen table is suggested. Students with a device on their own
in their bedroom is not a good combination.
• Storage of the device outside of their bedroom at bedtime is suggested.
Filtering and History Checking
• The school network filter is very strong. Inappropriate sites are blocked. Home networks are often less
restricted. Check your filter settings.
• Discuss with your child that you retain the right to look at the history on their device at any stage. Deleted
history may mean that you have got something to hide!
Uploading/Downloading
• Approval should be given before uploading and downloading programmes or data. Only programmes from
reliable sources should be used.
Balance
• Maintaining a balance is really important for children. Some children find games very addictive and managing
time is essential. Using a kitchen timer to set time on games can be useful.
• 20 mins on a device and 20mins outside. Balance the time for children. It can also be a great motivation for
getting other things done .e.g ‘you can have 20 mins on the device once you have……’
For Office Use Only: Copy of agreement returned: Initials: _______________
I understand the importance of these conditions and guidelines and that not following these may result in me losing the privilege of using my device at school.
