Project Objective

Contributing to the renovation of 10 public libraries in Turkey annually, thus 50 public libraries in total in aperiod of 5 years, announcement of renewed services to potential users, and resuscitation of inactivelibraries towards the local needs.

Project Implementers

Community Volunteer university students studying at provinces where My Library Project is implemented.

Target Group

Potential library user children, teenagers and adults living in provinces where the Project is implemented.

Aims of the Project

Contributing to make public libraries become popular research and meeting centers that are rich inresources, and to support them to provide quality services.

Expected Results of the Project

To increase the use of libraries by making public libraries act as centers responding to the needs of existingand potential users and host cultural-artistic events at locations they reside in.

B) WORKS PERFORMED

Volunteers, by establishing working plans according to the needs of locations they reside in, carried out physicalrenovation work at 8 libraries in order to contribute to the restoration of public libraries, inform the users about the

renewed services and revive inactive libraries towards the needs of their respective locations, thereby ensured thatthe libraries are physically more useful.

Renovated Public Libraries were at Bursa, Bolu, anakkale, Kocaeli, Malatya, Mersin, Mula (2) and Trabzon.

At project libraries;

9 physical renovations,

10 Movie events,

12 Talks with childrens authors,

2 Openings,

3 Festivals,

10 Cartoon Exhibitions (Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old),

13 Photograph Exhibitions (Are you aware? / Mevlana is 800 Years Old / The Librarian on Donkey / Booksand Human),

1 Puppet Show was held.

161 volunteers took part in the organization of these events and more than 10thousand people utilized theseservices.

Bursa Public Library

Observations on the Library:

The library is close to the city center. It attracts many visitors, but resources are insufficient, especially at kids

section. There is a conversation room on the ground floor for talks and similar events.Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Bursa Public Library were determined;the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to be implemented in thelibrary.

Celebration Program for 44th Week of Library to take place in late March and early April was plannedtogether with library management.

The event Kelolan at Libraries was held with Ycel Feyziolu, the Taleteller, on 9 April 2008. 300students in total attended these events composed of 2 sessions. Participants were provided an

orientation regarding the library. Garden walls of the library were painted and cartoons were drawn on the walls on 3 May 2008 and 10

May 2008 with financial contributions made by the locals.

The painted garden was opened on 13 May 2008.

On 13 May 2008, the caricature exhibition Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old was opened withcaricatures of 35 artists from zmir Clock Tower Group of Caricaturists within scope of the event Weare Honoring Nasreddin Hodja at Libraries, organized to commemorate Nasreddin Hodja, famousTurkish humorist, and his 800th birthday, throughout the year 2008. The exhibition remained open for10 days.

Again on 13 May 2008, the talk titled Humor and Nasreddin Hodja Reading Habit - How Did IBecome an Author? was held with participation of author Sleyman Bulut. 150 students attended theevent. After the event, Vice Governor of Bursa Province and Provincial Director of Culture awarded theCertificate of Achievement and plates in reference to the works carried out by young CommunityVolunteers at libraries. Participants were provided an orientation regarding the library.

As to be used at events to be carried out on 6 June 2008 at the library, 1 projector device and 1projector screen were purchased through the project budget and conveyed to the library.

On 23 July 2008, 10 chess sets and 2 scrabble games and 2 taboo games were donated to the library.

On 25 July 2008, 5 September 2008 and 25 September 2008, total of 637 books were donated to thelibrary.

On 28 August 2008, the audio system purchased for library events was delivered.

anakkale Mehmet Akif Ersoy Public Library:


It is located in the center of town and is easily accessible. A separate Kids Room is in available. Also Chess Room

and Periodical Reading Room are available.Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at anakkale Mehmet Akif Ersoy PublicLibrary were determined; the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works tobe implemented in the library.

On 22-24 March 2008, renovation and arrangement works were performed at the library. Gardenfences of the library as well as streetlights were painted and landscaping in the garden was completed.Desks and chairs in the kids room were painted and renovated. The walls were painted and cartoonfigures were drawn on them; an aquarium was built; cushions were provided for the kids room. Sheetsof sitting furniture in the newspaper room were renewed. 27.000 books were barcoded and arranged.

38 volunteers participated in the activities. Support was provided for celebration of the 44th Week of Library. anakkale Provincial Director of

Culture and Tourism awarded the Certificate of Achievement for the works performed at the library on31 March 2008.





On 9 October 2008, the booth of the Community Volunteers Foundation My Library Project wasopened at the 1st anakkale is Reading Book Fair. TOGSES, the publication of the CommunityVolunteers Foundation, and the brochures printed for My Library Project, were handed out at the booth.Also visitors were informed about the Community Volunteers Foundation and My Library Project. Thefair continued until 16th of October.

anakkale Governor Mr. Orhan Krl gave a plate to the Community Volunteers during opening of the1st anakkale is Reading Book Fair in relation to My Library Project at anakkale Public Library on 9October 2008.

Elaz Public Library


It is located in the center of town and used frequently. There is a study room for those preparing for SS Exam

(University Admission Exam) as well as for university students.Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Elaz Public Library were determined;the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to be implemented in thelibrary.

On 13 December 2007, an event called We are Honoring Mevlana at the Libraries was held within thescope of My Library Project in parallel with celebrations of UNESCO International Mevlana Year and800th Birthday of Mevlana. Within the scope of the event, a talk about Mevlana was organized byAssoc. Prof. Dr. Cevdet Kl, Elaz Frat University Faculty of Theology, and 30-minute nay concertwas given by students of Frat University Conservatory. Afterwards, all participants visited the

exhibition which will continue for 4 days at the library. 100 persons participated in the event. Between 13 December and 17 December 2007, a photograph-art exhibition and book fair about

Mevlana was held.





On 26 November 2008, free Chess Courses were given by utilizing the chess game sets donated tothe library.

On 29 November 2008, a documentary film was displayed for kids. Film displays are ongoing regularly.

Eskiehir Public Library


The Library is located in the center of town and is easily accesible. It hosts many events at local scale. Also the

mobile library is run actively.Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Eskiehir Public Library weredetermined; the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to beimplemented in the library.

On 5 December 2007, an event called We are Honoring Mevlana at the Libraries was held within thescope of My Library Project in parallel with celebrations of UNESCO International Mevlana Year and800th Birthday of Mevlana. Within the scope of the event, a small nay and rhythm concert was held withsupport of the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism in association with OdunpazarMunicipality. After the concert, a presentation about Mevlana prepared by Community Volunteer

teenagers was held. A documentary film about Mevlana was displayed. Following the event, thephotograph-art exhibition titled Mevlana is 800 Years Old, which was planned to remain open for 2weeks, was opened.

On January 2-8, 2008, an exhibition was held at the library to display 84 photographs ranked, andentitled to be exhibited, at the photograph contest named Are You Aware? with theme of human rightsand violations, organized by Community Volunteer youth studying at Istanbul University.

On April 2-15, 2008, a photograph exhibition titled Book and Human was held by the cooperation ofMy Library Project of Community Volunteers of Ege University and Ege University Photography Club.

On 25 July 2008, 5 September 2008 and 25 September 2008, total of 637 books were donated to the

library.

Krehir Public Library


The library has a different profile than the public libraries in other cities thanks to its location in the center of town:

Since K

rehir Ahi Evran University Library has just been established and thus lacks resources, the public libraryattracts many university students. Conversation room and exhibition hall are not available; the library needsphysical renovation. The events for kids held at local scale attract a lot of attention.

Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Krehir Public Library weredetermined; the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to beimplemented in the library.

On 7 May 2008, a talk was organized with Bilgin Adal, childrens literature author, with 800 children in3 sessions held at Krehir Public Library. Those participating in the event were informed about thelibrary and membership. They were also given membership cards to encourage them to be a member

of the library. On the following days, the library management reported to us that 400 children becamemembers of the library.

Between 22-30 May 2008, the photograph-art exhibition titled The Librarian on Donkey was held. Theexhibition was prepared by Aydn leri, My Library Project Coordinator, and contained librarianshipstudies carried out as well as social activities realized by Mustafa Gzelgz, The Librarian on Donkey,in and surrounding rgp, Nevehir.

On 23 May 2008, a talk was organized with Sleyman Bulut, childrens literature author, with 600children in 3 sessions held at Krehir Public Library. Those participating in the event were informedabout the library and membership. They were also given membership cards to encourage them to be amember of the library.

On 23 May 2008, the caricature exhibition Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old was opened withcaricatures of 35 artists from zmir Clock Tower Group of Caricaturists within scope of the event Weare Honoring Nasreddin Hodja at Libraries, organized to commemorate Nasreddin Hodja, famousTurkish humorist, and his 800th birthday, throughout the year 2008. Kocaeli Public Library


The Library is situated within Sabanc Culture Center. There is a Theater and Conversation Hall for events.

Shopping centers around the Library as well as newly built Municipality Building facilitate the access to the library.Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Kocaeli Public Library weredetermined; the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to beimplemented in the library.





On 1 December 2008, Bilgin Adal, author of children and teenager literature, held a talk with childrenat Kocaeli Public Library. 150 students participated in the event.

Konya Public Library


The library is located in an old building in the center of town. Physical renovation cannot be applied due to the

historical character of the library building. Since the library is growing, challenges might be faced in the comingyears.

Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Konya Public Library were determined;the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to be implemented in thelibrary.

On 22 May 2008, Sleyman Bulut, author of children and teenagers literature, had a talk with children.200 students participated in the conversation.

On 22 May 2008, the caricature exhibition Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old was opened with

Mersin Public Library


The library is in the center of town. There is not a room for holding events. There is an audio-library section for

visually impaired individuals. Physical renovation cannot be applied as it is an old structure. It seems to be moreappropriate to carry out event-based activities.

Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Mersin Public Library were determined;the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to be implemented in thelibrary.

Celebration Program for 44th Week of Library was planned together with library management.

On 18th to 20th April, 2008, Pre-School Department was arranged and renovated at Mersin PublicLibrary. Then, fairy tales figures were drawn on the walls of that department.

On 28 and 29 April 2008, the renovated pre-school department was opened. During the opening event,Puppet Artist Hakan Arsoy organized a puppet show. Participants were introduced to the puppet artafter the display.

On 28 April 2008, the photograph-art exhibition titled The Librarian on Donkey was held. Theexhibition was prepared by Aydn leri, My Library Project Coordinator, and contained librarianshipstudies carried out as well as social activities realized by Mustafa Gzelgz, The Librarian on Donkey,in and surrounding of rgp.




On 22 August 2008, a talk was held with Bilgin Adal , childrens literature author, in kids department atMersin Public Library with cooperation of My Library Project and Mersin Summer Season Project. 60children participated in the event.

Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library


The library is around Mula Museum and Culture Center situated in an area with historical buildings. Physical

renovation cannot be applied due to the structure of the building. There is a kids library in a separate area, stillaffiliated with the library.

Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi PublicLibrary were determined; the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works tobe implemented in the library.

On 15 January 2008, books were arranged and cleaning was done at ehbal Hilmi Baydur KidsLibrary under Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library.

On 15 January 2008, the talks titled Reading Habit and Libraries - How Did I Become an Author?

were held with participation of Sleyman Bulut, author of children and teenagers literature, at ehbalHilmi Baydur Kids Library under Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library. 100 children participatedin the event.

On 1, 16 and 21 March 2008, books were arranged and cleaning was done at both ehbal HilmiBaydur Kids Library and Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library.

On 9 March 2008, a reading event was organized as a group of 35 Community Volunteers in order toemphasize reading habit and raise awareness in the community on Mula Snrszlk Square. Duringthe event, My Library Project and Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library were introduced to theparticipants.

Activities were held for celebration of the 44th Week of Library.

On 4 April 2008, Mr. O. Murat Ssl, Mula Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism, awarded theCertificate of Achievement to Mula Community Volunteers due to their contribution to both the Libraryand the Library Week.

On 19 April 2008, the landscaping of the garden of ehbal Hilmi Baydur Kids Library under MulaHoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library was carried out.

On 19 April 2008, automation studies were launched at Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library.Data entry to automation system was continued in varying periods throughout the year.

On 26 April 2008, the flowers were planted at the garden ofehbal Hilmi Baydur Kids Library underMula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library.

On 28 April 2008, energy-saving lamps provided by the Solar Generation Project were assembled inMula Mustafa Efendi Public Library.

Emphasis was placed upon automation studies throughout May. Data was entered to the Librarysautomation system on 3, 10 and 17 May 2008.

On 24 May 2008, the 1st TOG (Community Volunteers Foundation) CowFest was organized at thelibrary. Within scope of the event, participants studied and read books all day at the library.

On 10th to 14th November 2008, several events were held throughout the week within the scope of theWorld Childrens Books Week.

On 10 November 2008, the documentary film Sar Zeybek prepared by Can Dndar was displayed atMula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library in order to commemorate Atatrks death.

On 11 November 2008, the caricature exhibition Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old was opened withcaricatures by 35 artists from zmir Clock Tower Group of Caricaturists within scope of the event Weare Honoring Nasreddin Hodja at Libraries, organized to commemorate Nasreddin Hodja, famousTurkish humorist, and his 800th birthday, throughout the year 2008. The exhibition remained open for15 days.

On 12 November 2008, the cartoon movie Ratatuy was displayed.

On 13 November 2008, a Children Festival was organized at the ehbal Hilmi Baydur Kids Library of

Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library. On 14 November 2008, Nurettin ci, author of children and teenagers literature, held a conversation

with children at Mula Hoca Mustafa Efendi Public Library. 200 students participated in theconversation.

On 3 December 2008, the movie titled My Left Leg was displayed on the International Day for theDisabled.

On 27 December 2008, the 2nd TOG (Community Volunteers Foundation) CowFest was organized atthe library. Within scope of the event, participants studied and read books between 09.00 and 15.00 atthe library. In following hours, the movie titled Good Will Hunting was displayed.

Trabzon Public Library


The library is located within Atapark in the center of town, in the vicinity of elementary schools. The library is mainly

used by elementary school students. There is not a conversation room. There are not enough sources in KidsDepartment.

Works Implemented:

Volunteers who will work at My Library Project implemented at Trabzon Public Library weredetermined; the priorities were set and regular meetings were held as regards to works to beimplemented in the library.

Between 24 and 28 December 2007, the event called We are Honoring Mevlana at the Libraries wasorganized at the library within the scope of My Library Project in parallel with celebrations of UNESCOInternational Mevlana Year and 800th Birthday of Mevlana. Within the scope of the event, Mevlana-themed painting cartons were distributed to children.

On 2nd May to 4th May, 2008, renovation studies and landscaping works were undertaken in KidsDepartment of Trabzon Public Library as arranged by Karadeniz Technical University My LibraryProject Team.





Between 21 November and 2 December 2008, the caricature exhibition Nasreddin Hodja is 800 YearsOld was opened with caricatures by 35 artists from zmir Clock Tower Group of Caricaturists withinscope of the event We are Honoring Nasreddin Hodja at Libraries, organized to commemorateNasreddin Hodja, famous Turkish humorist, and his 800th birthday, throughout the year 2008.

On 19 December 2008, Erdoan Kahyaolu, author of children and teenagers literature, met children inthe reading room for adults at Trabzon Public Library. 250 children participated in the event.

Effect on the target groups and the region is measured by observation of the number of books in the libraries,number of members and increase in the number of guests, by getting views of library personnel, and by surveys ofCommunity Volunteers that execute the studies.

Measurement and evaluation studies are performed towards the following purposes:

G) GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT

NATIONAL MEETINGS:

A meeting was held where the decisions were made to implement the project with a sound operation, to gather

together the local Community Volunteer groups that will implement the project, to evaluate the improvements asregards to the project, and to facilitate the implementation of the project.

Evaluation, Transfer and Development Meeting for My Library Project16-19 May, zmir

Workshop sessions were held with participants from groups that implement and are interested in implementing theproject in subjects such as project experience transfer, assessment of the current situation at local places,planning, reporting, communication, measurement and assessment, creativity, networking, budget and events. Alsoproject activities for the next period were planned.

Meeting participants included Sakarya and Samsun groups which implemented the project in 2006, Bolu, Denizli,Edirne, zmir, Kars and Sivas from the groups of 2007; Bursa, anakkale, Eskiehir, Krehir, Kocaeli, Konya,

Mersin, Mula and Trabzon groups implementing the project in 2008.In addition, one representative from each of Amasya, Bayburt, Kastamonu and Bilecik organizations, which areinterested in implementing project in 2009, were present in the meeting. In total, 25 participants from 21 localCommunity Volunteer groups, 1 trainer and 2 TOG office staff participated.

Photograph Exhibition Titled The Librarian on Donkey

The photograph-art exhibition titled The Librarian on Donkey, which was prepared by Aydn leri, My Library ProjectCoordinator, and contained librarianship studies carried out as well as social activities realized by Mustafa Gzelgz,was exhibited in and surrounding rgp, Nevehir.

Photograph Exhibition Titled Are You Aware? on human rights and violations

Photographs which ranked at Photograph Contest titled Are You Aware? were started to be exhibited at the libraries.An exhibition was held at the libraries to display 84 photographs that ranked and acquired the right to be exhibited at theproject contest that was named Are You Aware? on human rights and violations, organized by Community Volunteeryouth that are studying at Istanbul University.

The photograph exhibition titled Book and Human was organized by the cooperation of My Library Project ofCommunity Volunteers of Ege University and Ege University Photography Club at libraries where My Library Projectwas implemented.

Mevlana Year

A series of events called We are Honoring Mevlana at the Libraries were held at libraries in 2008. In these events;activities including talks with theme Mevlana, Whirling Dervishes Performance, Nay Concerts, Picture and PhotographExhibition about Mevlana, Exhibition of Mevlana's Sayings, Exhibition of Mevlanas Rubais and Poems, Exhibition of

Mevlana Books, Mevlana Poems Concert, Mevlana Cartoon Movie, Mevlana Documentary Film were organized andbook separators with Mevlana's sayings on and Akide Candies were distributed.

Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old Activities

The group caricature exhibition titled Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old, which was prepared in cooperation with MyLibrary Project and zmir Clock Tower Group of Cartoonists in honor of Nasreddin Hodja, was displayed in libraries.Also in 2008, the events called We are Honoring Nasreddin Hodja at the Libraries Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Oldwere held at Public Libraries.

H) PROJECT PROMOTION ACTIVITIES AND PARTNERSHIPS

44th Week of Library

Community Volunteer youth in provinces where My Library Project was implemented provided support for celebration ofthe 44th Week of Library that took place between the 31st March and 4th April 2008. Joint activities were carried out withthe library management.

Istanbul Branch of the Turkish Librarians Association Awarded My Library Project with the Prize of Friend ofLibrary and Librarian

The prize was given by Mr. Cumhur Gven Taba, Vice Governor of Istanbul, to Mr. brahim Betil, Chairman of theCommunity Volunteers Foundation, during the opening ceremony of the 44th Week of Library that took place in TaksimAtatrk Culture Center on 31 March 2008.

13. IZMR TYAP BOOK FAIR

On 18-27 April 2008, at Izmir TYAP Book Fair, a stand was opened for promotion of TOG and My Library Project with

the support of Ege University My Library Project team and other Community Volunteers organizations at Dokuz EyllUniversity, zmir Institute of High Technology, Mula University, Kafkas University and Uluda University. Guests at thefair were informed about the project. Discussions were made with publishing houses, authors and other NGOs.

3000 copies of TOGSES and 5000 copies of My Library Project promotion brochures were distributed at the fair; contactinformation of those visiting the fair and interested in being a Volunteer and Adult Supporter were taken.

Meeting with zmir Clock Tower Group of Caricaturists

Within the scope of fair studies, zmir Clock Tower Group of Caricaturists, which held the caricature exhibition titledNasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old were met. As a result of the meeting, it was decided to display the group exhibitiontitled Nasreddin Hodja is 800 Years Old at the libraries in honor of the 800th anniversary of Nasreddin Hodjas birth.

Again as a result of these meetings, the events called We are Honoring Nasreddin Hodja at the Libraries NasreddinHodja is 800 Years Old were held at Public Libraries in 2008.
