The John Muir Award

The John Muir Award is about helping the environment and also discovering and exploring new places.

The section are:•Discover- go on different visits to new places. •Explore- taking part in different outdoor activities to learn about the environment. •Conserve- doing something protect the environment.• Share- telling other people what I have done

The places I have visited

As part of my award I have visited new places in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.• Sid Wood • Kielder Forest•Chopwell Wood • Havanagh Country Park

Sid Wood

I went on a wood land walk at Sid Wood in the Northumberland national park. I enjoyed it because i have not been there before and i like the fresh air and the scenery.

Chopwell Wood

I learnt about animal habitats and had a go at making a hedgehog habitat to find out more about how animals to live. I had a bbq and by sitting down in one place for a long period of time I was able to take more notice of what was around me. I enjoyed the activities but i did not like the rain.

Havanagh Country ParkI learnt about using plants and animals to help me survive in the wild. This has helped me learn more about the environment and appreciate it more. The activities i did were: •Fire lighting- I learnt how to use birch bark and fire steels to light a fire. We had to raise the fire off the ground to protect the plants and animals from the fire. •Outdoor cooking- if learnt how to prepare and cook rabbit.•Shelter building- i used sticks and branches that I found on the ground to learn how to build shelters.

Kielder Forest Conservation

I spent two days at Kielder forest helping the forestry commission lay and maintain tracks in the forest. By helping to conserve the forest i have helped lower erosion to protect plant and animals and help more people to visit the forest.

Sharing my experiences

I did not really know much about the outdoors before taking part in the John Muir Award. I have learn a lot of taking part in these activates. I think other people should take part in the John Muir Award and have enjoyed reading about my experiences.
