What has gone before serves as an introduction to the theme of hope. Christian hope is very fundamental in the lives of those who are true followers of Jesus. Hope - one of the ‘three theological virtues’ (fundamental to our relationship with God; cf. 1 Cor 13:13) - is little appreciated by many of our people, whose faith is often too individualistic. Because they are not familiar with the great story unfolding in the Scriptures, their faith awareness does not include an eager longing for the final achievement of God in the divine plan for the whole of creation. Christian hope is the certainty that, despite all appearance to the contrary, God’s final reign will come: ‘Fear not, little flock, it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom’. This certainty is essential to a vital faith, the second reading tells us: ‘only faith can guarantee the blessings we hope for, or prove the existence of the realities that at present remain unseen’. GOSPEL REFLECTION Today’s gospel passage follows on from teaching concerning a right attitude to this world’s possessions: ‘Get yourself treasure that will not fail you’. Jubilee Year of Mercy A Meditation Pilgrimage

culminating in walking through the Door of Mercy.

Marian Valley 8th October 2016 , a Parish event.

Celebrating a jubilee every 50 years was an ancient Hebrew custom (see Leviticus 25:8-13). It was a year of rest and restoration, when captives were set free, debts were paid and land was not sown or harvested. Our last “ordinary” jubilee took place during the year 2000, marking the second millennial anniversary of Christ’s birth. There is also a catholic tradition of proclaiming an “extraordinary jubilee” outside the 25 year cycle. Our last “extraordinary jubilees” were held in 1933 and 1983 marking the 1900th and the 1950th anniversaries of Christ death and resurrection. Pope Francis proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to be celebrated from 8th December 2015 (solemnity of the Immaculate conception) to 20th November 2016 (solemnity of Christ the King)

This is the year to become more merciful in our own lives and bring God’s Mercy to others.

Mission Church Appeal next weekend

(August 13-14) When the Church celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lord, we are actually marking a moment when the way Jesus looked to those around Him, changes. He looks…different. The mechanics are not as important as the fact that, for a moment in time, He appeared as someone radiant and majestic. It’s not a bad metaphor when we contemplate the gift of missionaries around the world – filled with God’s Holy Spirit, they see the Christ in each of those they serve and encounter. For missionaries, like Sr Eulie, the person before them is no longer someone impoverished, or illiterate, or disease-ridden or handicapped. They see ‘the Jesus’ inside each of them. This is why our appeal theme echoes the words of Jesus Himself: “Whatsoever you did to the least of these, you did unto me?” On behalf of the missionaries who you are being asked to support during the Catholic Mission appeal weekend, thank you for helping bring about a transfiguration in the lives of so many. May God Bless you for your generosity.
