University of Western Australia – Perth, WA 2/2011 – 10/2012

Technical Architect - Active Directory & Desktop Virtualisation Specialist - Independent

Contractor

Jeremy was contracting to UWA to complete multiple projects:

1) Designed and implemented a central Active Directory environment to replace roughly 45

existing domains across the University.

The design needed to consider:

The devolved IT management structure to ensure that all IT admin staff across various

faculties, schools, centres and business units continued to have full control over their

servers, workstations and Group Policies.

Page 7: My full resume

The integration of Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) that provisions and

manages all user and group objects.

The integration of Unix/Linux systems, meaning that the Unix Attributes for user and

group objects needed to be populated.

The integration with NetApp storage for both CIFS and NFS access.

The integration with 3rd party DNS (Nixu) and DHCP (InfoBlox).

Naming standards across the University.

Group Policy modelling and processing.

Some facts about what he achieved:

Although the directory held about 150,000 user objects, there are about 70,000 active

users. There are roughly 20,000 group objects. At the end of the migration there will be

about 15,000 computer objects.

All Domain Controllers are Windows 2008 R2 Core Edition.

Remote sites were designed to use a Read Only Domain Controller (RODC).

A Remote Desktop Server farm was designed to manage the environment.

The environment build was mostly scripted using PowerShell.

WINS and NetBIOS were disabled.

According to Microsoft they were only aware of two other large Active Directory

environments in Australia that were built solely on 2008 R2 Core Edition.

Roughly 4 months into the live production environment Microsoft completed an ADRAP

(Risk and Health Assessment Program for Active Directory). They found very few issues,

all of which were minor.

Assisted the faculties with the migration about 94 Student Labs (including libraries) to

the new central environment. With the exception of the Libraries that remained on

Windows Vista, all Student Labs were moved to Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.7.x, and Red

Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1.

Converted all legacy Windows 98 and XP labs to Windows 7. This required strong

application compatibility knowledge and remediation.

Once implemented he provided 4th level support, knowledge transfer and mentoring to the

Information Services Operations Teams, and to all faculty IT staff for approximately 12 months.

2) Design and implement a common MOE throughout the University, which was to include

Desktop and Application Virtualisation. There were three architects working on this because

there was a Windows, Mac and Linux stream. The MOE project was put on hold on 24th

October 2012 due to budget cuts and re-prioritisation of projects that needed to be

completed to support the MOE.

The design of the Windows stream was to include products such as:

Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit (MAP)

Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT)

Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)/ConfigMgr 2012

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT)

Page 8: My full resume

Microsoft User State Migration Tool (USMT)

XenApp 5 on Windows 2003 32-bit to XenApp 6 on Windows 2008 R2 for:

o WNG (Westnet Infrastructure Group)

o DBP (Dampier Bunbury Pipeline)

Implemented an automated build process.

Packaged and deployed 92 applications.

Previous to this Jeremy completed Citrix Farm migrations/rebuilds for both business

units in 2009 whilst working for Datacom.

Water Corporation – Perth, WA 7/2010 – 1/2011

Consultant - Citrix Specialist - Independent Contractor

Jeremy was contracted to redesign and rebuild the Citrix XenApp 5 Farm on Windows

2003, including replacing the CSG server with a HA pair of NetScalers to provide more

resilience.

Implemented an automated build process that tied into the existing server SOE.

Worked with the IT Operations Team to migrate users to new servers.

Packaged and deployed 63 applications.

Senior Solution Architect / Principal Engineer

Jeremy was primarily responsible for leading the Application and Desktop Delivery practice at

documents, and hands-on project delivery.

Areas of responsibility cover the following products:

Page 9: My full resume

WAN Optimisation – Citrix Repeater (WANScaler)

As a team leader Jeremy is also responsible for mentoring and assisting other team members as

required, and is part of the leadership group helping to build and grow the professional services

team.

I was employed by Datacom to primarily provide project delivery and 3rd level support for Citrix

customers. As Desktop Virtualisation slowly matured I became the technical leader for VDI,

which primarily focused on Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View.

I successfully delivered many projects. All Citrix deployments were fully automated. All

applications were packaged.

To deliver these projects successfully you need strong and broad skills across the Infrastructure,

Virtualisation, Storage, Networking and Security areas.

From the Microsoft side of things I have advanced knowledge of the Windows Operating System,

as well as strong Active Directory, Group Policy, Profile Management, and Remote Desktop

Services design and implementation. These of course are essential technologies to the successful

implementation of many IT projects that affect the end user experience.

For automation, I have very strong scripting skills in multiple languages, advanced knowledge of

Windows Operating System deployment mechanisms, and application packaging techniques.

I left Datacom because I was ready to take that next step and become an Independent

Consultant.
