MY FAVORITE LEADER

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF HIS LIFE• Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

• Born on 18 July 1918

• South African politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

• An activist against apartheid in South Africa.

• armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC).

• Arrested and found guilty of sabotage.

• imprisoned for about 27 years.

• Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy in 1994.

VISION/PURPOSE• To bring plight of the black people in South Africa

• To fight against apartheid (which divided black and White people in South Africa and kept them separate)

• In South Africa it grew to be a system of governance that discriminated against black South Africans.

• . Nelson Mandela fought long and hard against this discrimination.

ABILITY TO INFLUENCE PEOPLE

• By standing up for what he believed in and dedicating most of his life and safety to gaining justice.

• By teaching others that they are also people and should be treated like it.

• Stopped slavery and cruel punishments to Negro's and created a new and fair era, were everyone had equal rights.

• Mandela stopped racism, apartheid and any controversies between the whites and blacks.

• He fought for his country and the well-being of others.

FOLLOWERSHIP• Nelson Mandela’s contribution and dedication to South Africa’s struggle in

achieving freedom and equal rights for every South African led to his popularity, followership and respect in South Africa.

• Nelson Mandela presented the people of South Africa with a leader in their struggle, providing the inspiration needed for a drastic change.

• He planted the idea in the people that there was something they could do about their situation.

FOLLOWERSHIP

• Won elections right after prison and became the first black President of South Africa. It was possible only because of his strong followership.

COURAGE

• It was a something Mandela perfected on Robben Island, where there was much to fear. Prisoners who were with him said watching Mandela walk across the courtyard, upright and proud, was enough to keep them going fordays. He knew that he was a model for others, and that gave him the strength to achievement over his own fear.

• He did not only guide people but fought for their rights.

• He had courage to say NO, to NEGOTIATE, and to BRING A CHANGE.

EMPOWERER• Mandela knew that he could not always be in front, and that his own great

goal could die unless he empowered others to lead.

• Mandela genuinely believed in the virtues of the team, and he knew that to get the best out of his own people, he had to make sure that they partook of the glory and, even more important, that they felt they were influencing his decisions.

• Walking across the green hills above the village one morning not long ago, Mandela recalled a lesson he learned as a boy, "When you want to get a herd to move in a certain direction," he said, "you stand at the back with a stick, then a few of the more energetic cattle move to the front and the rest of the cattle follow, you are really guiding them from behind, That is how a leader should do his work”

IMPACT• His changes made an irreversible difference in the lives of every human

being on the planet, from every background in every country, though many not may realize it.

• Mandela decided to one day speaks up for what he believed in during the South African apartheid – that no matter what your skin color, everyone deserves the same rights.

• Act of forgivingness

• Communities started to speak out about their wish for change, and slowly, a difference began to take place.

ROLE MODEL• Firstly, he fought long and hard to have apartheid abolished.

• Solid persistence.

• Nobel Peace prize winner in 1993.

• He won it for the peaceful termination of apartheid.

• He never showed any bitterness towards the oppositions.

• He was a man of wisdom, strength, persistence, equality, fairness and love.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

• Nelson Mandela did not lead his people only from front, but from back too.

• He motivated others with his words and actions.

• He taught others by examples.

• He wasn't attached to a particular ideology or goal. Instead, he was willing to build relationships on all sides in order to accomplish his goal of a united and successful South Africa.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

• "During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to the struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

• Strong communicator.

• It was due to his excellent communication skills that he was able to convey his thoughts to the people and plant in them the idea of getting freedom and their rights equal to that of white people.

• Ability to negotiate effectively.

IN THE END…..

• Nelson Mandela is an inspirational figure for everyone. He exemplifies all of the qualities that people strive to have, and has dedicated his life to human justice. If people follow even a few of Mandela’s examples, volunteer in their communities, and take the time to help others then they will have a better understanding of people in general. People need a positive role model like Nelson Mandela, and for that reason it is important to keep his achievements and successes alive.
