SOCIAL MEDIA:
• Communication• Information• Sharing• Representing myself• Expressing myself
WHY I USE SOCIAL MEDIA
• My favorite social media network• Use multiple times within the day• Positive experiences
– Tweeting with Erik Qualman• (Who also followed me!)
– Made a good impression on my internship company• Were impressed with my enthusiasm for social media• Liked how I communicate & engage
– Staying current with SM trends for my internship– Being on top of current events
• My “necessary evil” social media network• Not my favorite
– But best to communicate w/ most family & friends• Use multiple times a day
– Although trying to not use as frequently• Positive experiences
– Getting to know my 2nd cousins better– Keeping up with my friend in Australia who travels a lot– Was how I got to know my now-fiancé better when we met– Learned about my internship from PNC English Club’s Open Group– Joining Groups w/ others interested in MOOCs, cats
• Negative experiences– Conflicts w/ family and friends– Social media envy
• Occasional use• Primarily for the image filters• Sometimes sharing pictures on the site• Oftentimes using filtered image to post on Twitter or
Facebook instead
• Not very often, on occasion • Use for self• Create boards
– For interests• Cats• Social media
– For self-expression• Images w/ quotes
• Positive experiences– Finding cute images– Discovering helpful social media infographics
• Negative experiences– Account still “following” users who have blocked me on Facebook
• Use once or twice a month– More if I have something to change or research
• Professional representation online• Read interesting, professional articles• Connect with people I know
– Connections can provide others with an idea of who you know, especially if there are mutual connections
• Follow businesses’ feeds and join professional groups• Positive experiences
– Was able to investigate my internship company & employees– See who has graduated from grad programs I’m interested in, what they are doing
professionally since graduating– Keeping up with classmates (who aren’t particularly close friends)– Connecting w/ professionals, professors/TAs I have met on Coursera
• Rarely, if at all• Google Search ranks G+ profiles highly• Another form of online representation• Positive experiences
– Have joined groups about Coursera courses• Good to connect w/ international users
• Negative experiences– Bored, not much interaction
GOOGLE+
• SMDG, LLC.– Social Media Development Group– Gary, IN– smdgnwi.com
• Social Media Intern– Training for a possible position as a Social Media Generalist
• Will be working with growing social media for clients• May also be writing, or contributing to, blog posts
about social media uses, trends
MY INTERNSHIP
• Connecting with friends, family– People you may have lost contact with
• Meeting new people• Researching, networking with potential employers• Following, participating in public conversation
POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA
• Can create interpersonal conflicts• Spread of misinformation• More room for miscommunication, errors• Becoming “addicted” to social media• Distractions, time-wasters• Social media envy
– Others falsely representing their life
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS WITH SOCIAL MEDIA
• Strengthened ties w/ family and friends– Keep up with their life events– Learn more about their interests, personalities
• Has allowed me to communicate with other likeminded people/groups, would not have been able to before
• Easily share my own life events w/everybody at once• Creates problems w/ friends and family• Have experienced social media jealousy
– Friends who have shared experiences I wish I could have
HOW SOCIAL MEDIA HAS AFFECTED ME
• Social media has impacted my life immensely – For better and for worse
• Will continue to be a large part of my life– More and more communication is taking place online– Internship requires me to keep up to date on social media
• Moderation is key– Too much can be overwhelming– Need to step back from it sometimes– Social media is a part of your life, not your life
IN CONCLUSION…
