Project Background It is my belief that in our Universal Newborn Hearing

Screen era, many children have gained the opportunity to live fuller lives (without the severity in speech and language delays once experienced due to delayed

diagnosis) and their story is equally as significant and worthy of documenting. Portraying a positive self-image of hearing aid users in the infant and toddler stages of

life and how their hearing technology is indeed a component of a very full life is lacking in children’s

literature. It is my goal to begin examining the process of how that void might be filled.

Project Purpose•  Create a developmentally appropriate picture

book for infants and toddlers designed to help establish and maintain a healthy, positive regard for their hearing technology

•  Illustrate how very young children (and their families) can face challenges and adjust accordingly without emphasizing loss

•  Create awareness of the gift of the newborn hearing screen program and the power of early intervention

Children’s books as a tool for Parent Advocacy

•  Serve as a bridge for important conversations with extended family and/or caregivers, specifically at child care centers

•  Provide parents with developmentally appropriate material to read and share with their child’s peers, therefore normalizing the technology in relevant social environments

•  May include diagrams for basic troubleshooting of specific hearing technology

My ears hear sounds all around The birds in the air and the bugs on

the ground. Noises soft and

noises loud, Like quiet

whispers and people in a crowd

A few excerpts from the book…

My ears can go with me everywhere

To playgrounds and parks

In light and in dark.

On every adventure they are right by my

side I’m learning to listen with my ears as my

guide.

My ears are quite special, they are called

hearing aids. And I’m really lucky – I

got mine as a tiny babe.

Now the joy of sound is something I treasure,

Because hearing “I love You” is the greatest of

pleasures.

Conclusions •  Initially the prototype of this book will serve our family by

being a centerpiece in our home library •  I’m currently working on a plan for dissemination – it has

taken a backseat to our families impending move but will continue once the dust has settled (literally).

•  A board book would offer the most durable and developmentally appropriate platform. I am looking into affordable print options that offer a “toddler-friendly” selection.

•  Developing this project has been a true exercise in gratitude for those mentioned on the following page. Our family is eternally grateful to everyone who has worked to make North Carolina’s Newborn Hearing Screen and Early Intervention programs as strong and successful as they are today.
