The Big Picture
International manufacturer of devices involved in high voltage power distribution and protection
Products include cable connectors, insulators, arrestors, and various other power line devices
One of the Top manufacturers in their field of products
Wadsworth Facility• Manufactures Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) Blocks used in power line
insulators
• 15 minutes from University of Akron campus
• Small to medium scale comfortable environment
The Co-op Experience Covers nearly ALL aspects of engineering Intro to manufacturing project engineeringFreedom to take control of projectsAbility to order materials and partsCommunication with other engineers and
company vendorsExcellent supervision and guidance
Made By Me
The Co-op Experience
Wide range of projects including mechanical pieces, electrical layouts, safety equipment…
A complete experience covering nearly all aspects of engineering and everyday work life
The Co-op Experience Hands on work
environment (not just a desk job)
Machine shop and fabrication skills
See designs become used in the real world
The Co-op Experience Have your own personal office space
Make deliveries and pick ups to and from local businesses
The Co-op Experience Data acquisition for kiln temperature profiling using thermocouples and computer software.
The Co-op Experience
DC to AC motor drive unit replacement bench test model.
Controller programming and troubleshooting.
Steel Pallet Straightener Project
The existing steel pallets are bowed causing blocks to shift while in the ovens.
The pallets are too costly to replace and need to be straightened
Steel Pallet Straightener Project
Step1: co-operate with supervisor to develop an initial design plan to solve the problem.
Steel Pallet Straightener ProjectStep2: Search for design
improvements.
In this case we found a flaw in that the initial design would not be able to bend the center part of the pallet.
Steel Pallet Straightener Project
Step3: New and improved design!
The new design features more economical parts and removable supports to bend the center piece of the pallet.
AutoCAD prints to support the design
Steel Pallet Straightener Project Step4:
Strength calculations to make sure the design will preform without failure due to loading.
We were able to choose an I-beam for our application based on the strength calculations.
Steel Pallet Straightener Project Step5: The Strength calculations were entered into excel
to produce required forces and factors of safety for the design.
Steel Pallet Straightener ProjectStep6: Finalize the design and
begin fabrication.
We were able to use in-stock and existing materials to save time and money in fabrications. (notice the white base was from an old outside testing setup)
The result is fully functional and saves the company thousands by being able to recycle the steel pallets.
Review• A complete experience covering nearly all
aspects of engineering and everyday work life
• See projects through from problem to solution and implementation
• Gain desirable hands on experience for future reference
• Get paid to learn, but still help the company
• Exposure to a wide variety of projects
• Learn things not taught in school that are desirable to employers!
• Have Fun!
