Why ES-1?A quick Reference Guide
800-248-0280www.exceptionalmetals.com
Introduction
Q. What is ANSI?
A. The American National Standard Institute (ANSI) is a non-profit organization
that administers and coordinates a voluntary standardization system.
Q. What is SPRI?
A. SPRI, (Single Ply Roofing Industry) is a non-profit trade association repre-
senting the sheet membrane and component supplier to the commercial
roofing industry. SPRI is an official ANSI canvasser and has worked with
representatives of the roofing industry to develop a number of consensus
standards.
Q. What is FMGlobal?
A. FMGlobal provides commercial and industrial property insurance and
engineering-driven risk management solutions.
Q. What are ICC & the IBC?
A. The International Code Council (ICC) is a non-profit organization that
works to develop a single set of comprehensive and coordinated national
model construction codes. The International Building Code (IBC) provides
a consensus standard for construction codes.
Q. How and when did all these organizations get involved in setting
roofing industry standards?
A. Prior to 1980 there were no roofing edge standards by which manufacturers
could hold themselves to. FM Global then created a system of standards
and approvals to use on FM Global insured properties. The design commu-
nity adopted this system because there were no other available standards
at the time.
In 1998 SPRI developed a series of three tests for judging the quality and
durability of fascia and coping. These tests then allow for ES-1 approval.
In 2002 the IBC wrote the ES-1 guidelines into their 2003 code. Many states
have adopted the 2003 IBC, and the list is continually growing.
Currently, SPRI and FM Approvals are working together to develop the next
generation of the standard.(Continued on next page.)

Q. What is the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 standard?
A. It is a reference for those who design, specify or install edge materials
used with low slope roofing systems. It addresses copings and horizontal
roof edges. The following factors are considered when designing a roof edge
• Structural integrity of the substrate that anchors the edge (e.g. nailers)
• Wind resistance of the edge detail
• Materials specifications
Q. What factors are used in ANSI/SPRI ES-1to determine the loads on
a roof edge?
A. The key elements considered are:
• Wind Speed
• Building Occupancy
• Building Height
• Location of the edge device on Roof
• Building Location
Three tests prescribed in ES-1 are used to determine if a roof edge will
withstand the determined load.
RE-1: This tests the roof edge termination for mechanically attached and
ballasted roofing systems. The RE-1 test evaluates the perimeter attachment
to ensure that it meets a minimum holding power of 100 lbs./ft. The membrane
is pulled at a 45° angle to the roof deck to simulate a billowing membrane.
Failure is defined as any event that allows the membrane to come free of
the edge termination or the termination to come free.
RE-2: This is a pull-off test for metal edge flashing. It evaluates the strength
of the metal edge flashing to ensure that the fascia system meets or exceeds
the building’s calculated design wind pressure. A load is applied to the fascia
metal, simulating wind load on the fascia. The calculation used is: force at
failure X face area = blow-off resistance. The results must meet or exceed
the calculated design wind pressure of the building.
RE-3: This test is a pull-off test for metal wall coping. It evaluates the strength
of the metal coping cap to ensure that it meets or exceeds the building’s
calculated design wind pressure. A load is applied to the coping cap, simulating
wind load. Simultaneous up and out forces are used. The calculations used
to determine the blow-off resistance for the top, face leg and backleg are:
force at failure X surface area = blow-off resistance. The results must meet
or exceed the calculated design wind pressure of the building.
Q. How does the code actually read?
A. The 2003 IBC, §1504.5: “Edge securement for low-slope roofs. Low-slope
membrane roof systems metal edge securement, except gutters, installed
in accordance with Section 1507, shall be designed in accordance with
ANSI/SPRI ES-1, except the basic wind speed shall be determined from
Figure 1609.”
(Note: The Figure 1609 wind speed map varies from the wind speed map
in ANSI/SPRI ES-1 1998 in the hurricane coastal regions as the map in
Figure 1609 was updated in 2003)
The ANSI/SPRI ES-1 document can be downloaded in its entirety for free
from SPRI (www.spri.org/publications) (Continued on next page.)

Introduction 6
Q. Which areas have adopted the 2003 IBC?
A. The majority of the United States has adopted some version of the IBC.
Many states and municipalities have already or are scheduled to adopt the
2003 version of the IBC (www.iccsafe.org/government/adoption.html)
Q. Who is involved in ES-1 testing and what products have been tested?
A. There are a variety of sources available for ES-1 tested products. Most
companies producing pre-manufactured roof edge systems have had some
or all of their standard products tested in accordance with the ES-1
standard. The NRCA has done testing - go to:
http://www.nrca.net/rp/technical/details/itslisting.aspx for more details.
Q. What does this mean for me? Do you have any recommendations in
light of recent developments?
A. It is important to frequently check your local requirements because
additional states, counties and municipalities are in the process of
adopting the 2003 IBC.
Roofs with edges designed and installed to meet ES-1 provide wind
securement in the most vulnerable area of the roof, the edge.

Common Industry Terms
Introduction
Anodizing – An electrolytic oxidation finishing process that coats aluminum
and produces a thin layer of aluminum oxide. This protective layer is extremely
hard and provides a long-term architectural finish (aluminum anodic oxide
coating). Available in clear or color applications. Anodized aluminum is
considered compatible with all metals.
Bonderized or Paint Grip – is galvanized steel that has been immersed in a
phosphate bath and dried in a chromate dry station during the manufacturing
process. This process produces the dull gray color that is characteristic of
bonderized metal. The phosphate coating serves as an excellent “primer” for
painting applications. Bonderized material should be painted immediately after
installation as the exposed phosphate coating is prone to white rust.
Cleat – A formed metal strip designed to hook into and secure the lower edge
of a gravel stop, extender or similar detail. A “continuous” cleat engages a
product along its entire length.
Coping – A custom-fabricated metal wall cap that covers the top of a parapet
wall or curb condition.
Counter flashing (1-piece or 2-piece) – A formed metal flashing that provides
a watertight seal/termination at the leading edge of roofing material. Counter flashing
is attached in areas where the membrane covers a wall or curb. A 2-piece
counter flashing (commonly referred to as “reglet counter flashing”) can be
removed and re-attached to make necessary repairs on the wall or curb.
Cover Plates – Formedmetal pieces usually 6˝ wide that are installed over the joints
of gravel stops, copings, gutter, and counter flashings where a lap joint is not used.
Downspout (open face or closed) – A formed metal tube used to carry
water from a roof level, scupper/collector box or gutter system to the ground.
A closed downspout is capable of transporting large volumes of water. An
open face downspout prevents ice or debris from clogging and causing potential
maintenance problems.
Drip Edge – A sheet metal “form” on the lower edge of a gravel stop, coping,
counter flashing or drain bar that is bent at a 40° angle to keep dripping water
from running directly down the face of a building.
Elbow (45° and 80°) – A downspout accessory item that is fabricated in an
angled section of downspout and used for directional changes. Available in
standard 45° or 80° versions. A-style elbows are angled away or perpendicular
to the wall. B-style elbows are angled parallel to the wall.
9
Common Industry TermsElectrolytic Action or Electrolysis (between different metals) – A galvanic
reaction caused by the presence of an electrolyte that results in the deterio-
ration of a weaker metal. The electrolyte may be rain water flowing from one
surface to another or moisture from the air containing enough acid to cause it
to act as an electrolyte.
End Cap – A metal piece formed to the shape of a gutter, coping, or
cornice, and used to close off an unfinished end.
Extender – A formed steel or aluminum fascia product that provides supple-
mentary coverage to a building perimeter when the width is not completely
terminated by a gravel stop or edge detail. Recommended for use when light
gauge materials cannot achieve coverage requirements without compromising
the strength, flatness, or aesthetic considerations.
Fascia – A horizontal piece (such as a board) covering the joint between
the top of a wall and the projecting eaves. Also called “fascia board.”
Flange, Roof Flange or Apron – The length of formed sheet metal material
that extends horizontally over the roof perimeter and is used to attach sheet
metal products and/or to “flash-in” roofing materials.
Galvalume – A coil/steel sheet that has been coated with an aluminum-zinc
alloy by a continuous hot-dip process. The nominal coating composition is
55% aluminum and 45% zinc. Duro-Last’s COOLR® metal finishes are
pre-finished galvalume.
Galvalume Plus or Acrylume – A standard galvalume coil/steel sheet with a
very thin acrylic coating applied to both sides. Not suitable for post-painting.
Galvanized Steel, G-90 – A steel coil/sheet that is coated with a minimum
0.90 oz. of zinc per square foot, giving the product excellent corrosion resistance.
G-90 galvanized steel is considered an acceptable exterior grade material.
Galvanizing – The application of a zinc coating to steel using either a hot-dip
or electro-deposition process that imparts added corrosion resistance.
Gauge – The thickness or diameter of sheet metal or wire. Dimensions are
expressed in decimal thickness or diameters.
Gravel Stop – A roof edge termination that is named for the function of
holding back gravel or ballast.

Common Industry Terms
Introduction
Gutter – A water carrying device at the roof edge used to collect rain water
and melting snow from a roof surface. Gutters are manufactured in material
thicknesses starting at .032˝, 24-gauge, G-90 galvanized steel or greater.
Kynar 500® or Hylar® 5000 – An extremely durable 70% resin-based paint
coating chemically known as Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF).
Lap Joint – A seam located at the end of a sheet metal product created by
placing 1-3˝ over (or under) the end of an adjacent section, eliminating the
need for covers or splice plates.
Metallic Finish – A premium paint finish that incorporates metal flakes to
create a sparkling, brilliant appearance.
Mill Finish – Metal in its raw unfinished form without a coating or finish.
Color and/or shade variations can be expected.
Miter (Inside or Outside) – A fabricated accessory sometimes referred to as
a "corner" that is usually installed at the intersection of two walls. It is produced
by cutting or bending two pieces of material and seaming them together.
Nailer – Construction-grade wood attached to a building substrate that is used
as a foundation for fastening steel or aluminum roof termination products
(treated wood nailer).
Oil Canning – The perceived waviness of a section of flat metal that exceeds
the limits for flatness for a given face height (or span) and metal thickness. Oil
canning is inherently found in light gauge, formed metal products, particularly
those products with broad flat areas. Structural integrity is not affected when
oil canning is present.
Outlet – A short metal tube that is installed into an opening in the bottom of
a gutter, collector or scupper. Used as a transition between the downspout
sections and the water collecting system.
Parapet – A perimeter wall that extends higher than the roof level.
Post-Coating – A paint or anodized finish process that is applied to a metal
product after it has been formed into its final shape.
Pre-finished – Materials that are coated with a factory-applied paint (Kynar
500® or Hylar® 5000) or anodized finish prior to sheet metal fabrication. Pre-
finished usually refers to flat metal already painted in sheet or coil form.
11
Common Industry TermsRadius – The radius of a circle is the distance from the center point to the
edge of the circle or roof. It is half the length of the diameter.
Reglet – A horizontal masonry saw cut or raked mortar joint used to attach
sheet metal counter flashing, sometimes referred to as a receiver (See
Counter Flashing, 1-piece or 2-piece).
Scupper – An opening in the side of a wall or sheet metal edge detail that
allows water to drain from the roof surface. Overflow scuppers are used as
a secondary drainage method in case of "interior drain" blockage. Spill-out
scuppers allow water to run directly over the edge of a building onto another
roof level or the ground. A downspout scupper (sometimes referred to as a
collector or conductor head) channels water into a downspout that carries
rain water to the ground or to a lower roof level.
Snap Cleat – A formed aluminum or galvanized steel attachment clip used
for securing 10' coping sections to the top of a parapet wall or curb.
Splice Plates – Formed metal pieces usually 6˝ wide that are installed
underneath the joints of gravel stops, copings, gutters, and counter flashings
when a lap joint is not used. Splice plates provide a more aesthetically-
pleasing appearance than cover plates (joint splices).
T-Miter – A steel or aluminum sheet metal product that is used at the intersection
of two parapet walls, where one wall terminates perpendicularly into a continuous
second wall.
Thermal Movement – The degree of expansion and contraction that materials
will allow due to a change in temperature. Thermal movement varies consider-
ably between different building materials. Natural materials such as stone,
timber, and brick have low thermal movement. Most metals have a medium
degree of movement and require careful joining. Plastic materials have a
high degree of thermal movement.
Transition Miter – A steel or aluminum sheet metal product utilized at the
junction (corner) of two parapet walls of different wall thicknesses.
Treated Wood – Wood planks used as wood nailers that are pressure-
treated with chemical preservatives for enhanced weatherability against
wood decay and insect damage.
Vinyl Masking or Protective Film – A removable plastic film applied for
protection during fabrication, shipping, and installation of various sheet metal
products. This film must be removed immediately before product installation.

Removable Gutter System Features and Benefits:
• Patent-pending gutter system is distributed exclusively by Duro-Last®
Roofing, Inc.
• Innovative design allows for excellent thermal movement and easy gutter
replacement.
• System consists of: custom gutter box, vinyl-coated drip edge, and gutter
bracket.
• Select from two different styles to match building design.
• Option 1: Designed to be used when a fluted roof is flush with the eave.
• Option 2: Designed to be used with projects with a slight over-the-eave.
Use this system when thermal movement is a factor.
• No need to remove and re-attach existing terminations, thus minimizing
material replacement and helping reduce labor costs.
• Available in 10´ lengths.
• Option 1 – See DL #2100 for complete installation detail.
• Option 2 – See DL #2105 for complete installation detail.
Made from:
• 24-gauge Steel.
• Can also be fabricated in:
• 24-gauge Stainless Steel
• .040 Aluminum
Metal finishes:
• 25 Kynar® finishes and Galvalume® Plus
• Bonderized metal
Tips and Tricks:
• Because the gutter is not attached to the building, it actually “floats” on
the drip edge and expands and contracts freely.
• The roof’s edge is terminated with vinyl-coated drip edge. If a section is
damaged, it can be replaced without disturbing the edge.
