My CDM Visit

a social story Children’s Discovery Museum is a fun place where I can look at, touch, play, and explore things. I might go there soon. I can learn about the Museum before I go. There are a lot of things at the Museum. I might see some of these things. I might not see all of them. That is ok. I might like some of them more than others. That is ok too. If I don’t like what I am doing, I can move and try something else. When I get inside the Museum, I can start to play right away. Later, there might be food for me to eat. When I leave I can say “goodbye” and “thank you” to the Museum staff. Here are some of the things I might experience.

We Find the Museum We might drive to the event. We might park the car and walk over to the Museum. The Museum is big and purple and has a yellow duck on the roof.

When I see the entrance, I am almost there.

When I go through the front entrance, I might see a statue of a bear and two baby bears. I can touch the statue. It is a rule to stay off the statue. There might be some people waiting at the door. This is the line to get in. I can wait my turn to go into the Museum.

Inside the Museum The Museum has a lot of things that I can try, and touch, and play with. If other people are touching and playing, I can wait for my turn. I can watch the other person play. When the other person walks away and there is space, it is my turn. There will be a lot of people in the Museum, adults and children. They will be talking and moving quickly around the Museum. If I need a break, I can tell my grownup. The Museum has two rooms where I can go if I need a break. One is on the first floor next to the ambulance. The other is on the second floor at the top of the steps. Water fountains are near the bathrooms. I can find the bathrooms by looking at the map. The Museum has a cafe where the adult with me can buy food. I can also eat my own food if I brought some. If I have a question, or if I need help finding something in the Museum, I can ask a helper wearing a purple shirt and name tag, or a helper wearing a volunteer ribbon around their neck.

FIRST FLOOR

The Pretend Street and Vehicles

Inside the Museum is a pretend street. The pretend street looks like a real street but it is pretend. Vehicles don’t move on the pretend street. I can walk on the pretend street. There is a pretend traffic light so I can practice safety rules.

The Fire Engine

I might see a real fire engine. I can go up the steps in the back. I can try on the firefighter clothes. I can play with the fire hose. The fire hose will not squirt me because it has no water. I can climb inside the fire engine, sit in the driver’s seat, and turn the steering wheel. If other people are inside, I can wait my turn. I know it is my turn when there is no one is sitting in the fire engine and there is space for me, or when an adult tells me.

The Stage Coach

I see a stage coach. I can climb inside if there is room. There is no light in the stagecoach, but it is not very dark. If there is no room, I will wait my turn.

The Ambulance

On the pretend street there is a real ambulance. I can climb inside the ambulance, sit in the driver’s seat, and turn the steering wheel. I can go up the steps into the back of the ambulance. I can pretend to be a doctor or pretend to be a patient. If other people are inside, I will wait my turn.

Pull, Push, Roll, Crank, and Pluck Around the Pretend Street there are cranks to turn, a rope to pull, things to roll or push, and strings to pluck. I can turn the cranks and pull the ropes fast or slow. This can be fun!

The Gravity Well

I might see a black circle and metal washers. I can pick up a washer and roll it in the circle.

Airplane

I can turn a crank to make a toy airplane fly in a circle.

Trolley

I can turn a crank and make a toy trolley move on the wall behind me.

Ball Drop

I can pull on a rope to pull balls up to the ceiling. I can let the rope go and watch the balls fall. It is a rule that I let go of the rope when the balls are falling. This will keep my hands safe.

The Blower

Near the fire engine there is a blower. I might hear the blower. The blowing air is cool, not warm. I can put my hand in the blowing air. I might see colored balls. I can put these colored balls in the blowing air and see if they will stay up. I can let the blower blow my hair. I can see how I look in the mirror. It’s expected that I put the balls back in the basket when I am finished playing. If other people are playing, I can wait my turn.

Strings and Springs

There is a spinning drum in front of the fire engine. There are strings stretched in front of it like guitar strings. I can pluck the strings and watch the pattern that the moving strings make against the spinning drum.

Treadle

I might see is a big wheel. I can watch the wheel through the glass. People on the ramp behind the wheel might be moving their bodies so the ramp goes up and down. That makes the wheel turn. The Museum rule is to wait until the ramp stops to get on. I can hold on to the yellow rail. It is easier to make the wheel turn if other people get on with me. We can try to make the ramp move up and down. Sometimes it takes a little work. The rule is to wait until the ramp stops moving to get off.

Make an Impression

I might see a tall wall made of small plastic pieces. The plastic pieces are called pins, but they do not pinch. I can put my hands on the pins and push gently. I can make hand prints, pictures, and words. Pins are for hands only. It is unsafe to put my face near the pins. My pictures and words might flatten out if other people push on the pins from the other side. That is OK. I can make them again. If there is no room at the wall, I will wait my turn.

Waterways I might see a lot of water and colored balls and people. I might get wet. I can put on a blue poncho to help me to stay dry. It is expected that I leave the poncho where I got it when I am finished playing here. I can do a lot of things with water.

Rain Hut

I might see a little round room with seats around the wall. If there is space, I can go in and sit down. I can see pretend clouds above the see-through roof.

If I put my finger into one of the black rectangles, drops of water will come out of the clouds. I can watch the water come down. I can hear the water hit the roof. If there is no room for me to enter or sit in the rain hut, I will wait my turn.

Jet

I can send a ball down a track to a jet of water. When the ball touches the water, it rides the water to the top. Sometimes it falls off. Sometimes other people send balls down and they knock my ball off. That is OK. I can send another one down. If I have been playing and someone is waiting, I will let them have a turn. I can come back later.

Ballcano

I might see a blue water table with air tubes around it. If I put a ball in an air tube, it will go up and over and into a tower in the middle. I can pull the rope. I might get splashed. That is OK!

Water Spiral

I might see a tank of water with a spiral in the middle, like a tornado. I can throw a ball into the tank. I can shoot a ball into the tank with the air tube.

Mist Fountain

I might see a fountain where the water makes a shape with mist inside. I can put my hand inside and touch the mist. I can change the water shape by turning the wheel.

Secrets of Circles There is a room that has many circles. If there is no room for me to play, I can wait my turn or come back a little later. These are some of the things I can do.

Wheel Rolling

I can haul the top rope to pull the brick to me. I can pull the bottom rope to push the brick away from me. If I need help I can ask the adult with me.

Spinning Disk

I might see a big spinning disk. I can take a small disk

and put it on its edge on the big spinning disk and see

how long it rolls before it falls. I might have to wait

until someone is finished to use a small disk.

Gear Table

I might see a lot of colorful gears of different sizes. I can put these gears next to each other. I spin the handle and see how these gears move. If someone is turning the gears, I can wait until they are finished.

Lathe Spin

I can sit on the bench if it is empty. I can put my feet on the pedal to make the wood spin. The pedal is heavy. If I need help I can ask the adult with me. There is a tool made of wood and metal. I can hold the tool gently against the spinning wood.

Round Boat

I might see a big round boat. I can climb inside the boat if there is room for me. I can pretend to row with the paddles.

Building Bridge

I can build a bridge with the blocks. If I need help, I can ask my grownup. I can walk on the bridge. It is a rule to put my hand on the rail while I am crossing over the bridge.

Mammoth Discovery!

I can visit an exhibit that has a lot of things about mammoths, which look like very big elephants, and which lived here a very long time ago. I can watch a video of a man who found some mammoth bones. I can see the real bones that he found in glass cases. I can explore the exhibit.

Life-size Mammoth Skeleton Model

I see the standing skeleton of a young mammoth. The Museum rule is that I do not touch this skeleton. I walk around it and look at it. I can see how big a young mammoth must have been.

Life-sized Mammoth Model

I can see a model of a life-sized adult mammoth outside. It looks a lot like an elephant, but it is much bigger. It is also bigger than the skeleton model. The model shows what the mother mammoth would have looked like. When I go back outside, if it is not too dark, I can stand near the mother mammoth and see how big she is. I can touch the model and the adult with me can take my picture with her.

Skeleton Puzzle

I can put the pieces in the frame to try to make a mammoth skeleton. If there is no room for me, I will wait my turn.

Fossil Models I might see different bones and teeth. I can touch these and even hold some of them. When I am finished, it is expected that I put the bones and teeth back where I got them.

Dig Pit

I can sit on the edge of the pit and use brushes and sticks to uncover fossil models. It is expected that I try to keep the sand in the pit. I can brush off my hands if I get too much sand on them. I am careful not to brush the sand on anyone else. It is a rule that I leave the brushes and sticks in the pit. If there is no room, I will wait my turn.

Spin Browser

I can spin the wheel and watch pictures that show how fossils are made from animals. If someone is playing with it, I will wait my turn.

Fossil Wall

I might see a wall that shows layers of pretend dirt and sand. I can touch the wall gently to feel the different textures. I can find pretend fossils in the wall. I can count the fossils I find.

Make-believe Land

I might see a room that is like a small make-believe land. I see small figures of people and animals. I can find figures that no one else is using and play with the figures to make up stories. It is a rule that I leave the figures in the room.

Shadow Wall

I can take the pretend bones and match them to their pictures on the wall. If someone is using the bones, I will wait my turn. I leave the bones on the wall or in the bin when I am finished playing

Face Paint

There is a room with mirrors. The helper gives me paint and a brush. I can put on an apron to keep my clothes clean. I can use the paint to paint on my face. If I don’t like how it feels or how it looks, I can ask the adult with me to help me wash it off at the sink. If I like it, I can leave it on. I can leave if I want to.

The Elevator

There is one elevator in the Museum. I can use the elevator or the stairs. If other people are waiting to use the elevator, I wait behind them. When the door opens, I make room so people on the elevator can get off. Then I wait my turn to get on. I share the elevator. How do we know when it is our turn?

LOWER LEVEL

Bubbles

I might see a Bubble exhibit. I can touch the bubbles and the bubble solution. If I get the bubble solution in my eyes, it can hurt. I can dry my hands with a paper towel so I don’t get bubble solution in my eyes. If I do get bubble solution in my eyes, it is ok. I can ask the adult with me for help to wash it out.

SECOND FLOOR

Art Gallery

I might see pictures hanging on the wall. I can look at them. It is a rule that I do not touch them.

Uncle Jon’s Dragon

There is one very big picture that I may touch. It is as big as the whole wall. It is called Uncle Jon’s Dragon. It has lots of colors. I can try to find the dragon. I can find some numbers. I can find other things. I can feel different textures when I touch the picture.

The Wonder Cabinet

I might see a door made of glass and wood. I can go inside. I might see a yellow butterfly hanging from the ceiling. There are many things to do here. I can use all of the exhibits, even ones that are for little kids. I will wait my turn if there is no room. I can leave whenever I want.

Gravity Well

I might see a black circle and blue balls. I can pick up a ball and roll it in the circle.

Sand Table

I might see a wood table filled with sand. I can touch the sand with my hand. I can use a scooper and tubes to play with the sand. I am careful to keep the sand in the table. If I rub my eyes with sandy hands, it will hurt. If I get sand in my eyes, I will ask the adult with me for help.

Dragon

There is a pretend dragon that is red and yellow. I can climb on the dragon.

Blocks

There are purple blocks. If the blocks are free, I can use them. I can build with the blocks or put the blocks in their spaces. It is expected that I only touch what I am building.

Pretend Area There is a cabinet filled with objects. I can look at the items through the window.

There is a table. I can set the table. I can pretend to eat.

Mirror Corner

I might see a corner with mirrors. I can climb under the wall into the corner and see myself. I can leave if I want to.

Forest

There is an area with a tree. I can crawl into the tree. I can play with puppets if they are free. I might see books. I can look at the books.

ABC Wall

I might see letters. I can turn the letters to see the surprises underneath them. It might be fun!

Crawl Space

There is a room with glass windows. I can go inside. I can play with all of the things in this room, even the ones that are for little kids. I can leave whenever I want.

Hexagon

I might see a wooden dinosaur on top of a wooden cabinet with six sides. Each side has something different I can do.

I can pick up the jars and smell them. I can smell the silver holes and guess what it smells like. I can lift up the door to see the answer.

I can look at the insects and the egg shells. I can look at the plants.

I can touch shells. They might feel smooth.

I can touch the pretend alligator. It might feel rough or bumpy!

I can press the buttons and make things spin.

Tunnel

There is a tunnel. I can walk through it. It is expected that before I go in the tunnel, I tell the adult who is with me. I can leave if I want to.

Sound Room

There is a room with red walls. Everything I touch will make noise. Some are loud, some are soft. I can leave if I want to.

Ball Machine

I might see a wall with tubes and ramps. I see black and white balls. I can put a ball in the tube and watch it roll down. It is expected that I leave the ball in a tube.

Carousel and Staircase There are stairs. I can go up the stairs.

I might see a room with spinning shadows. I can look at the shadows. I can sit down on the bench. I can leave if I want to.

Art Studio

There is a room with a short door. I can go inside. I can put on an apron to keep my clothes clean. It is a rule to leave the apron where I got it when I leave. I can leave whenever I want.

There is a wall with paint cups. It is a special painting wall. I can use a brush or my fingers to paint on this wall. If I get paint on my hands, I can wash it off.

There are two long tables. If there is a free chair, I can sit down at the table. I might see a tray filled with flour. I can touch it with my hand. It might feel soft. If I squeeze it with my hand, it might feel hard. I can use the tools to play with it. It is expected that I keep it in my tray. I can leave when I want to.

Rainbow Pizza and Market

I might see a green car. If there is room I can sit in the car and steer. I might see the boxes in the back of the car. I can take out the plastic fruits and vegetables. I can sort them by color. There is a pretend pizza kitchen. I can pretend to make pizza. I can find a plastic crust and plastic fruits and vegetables that no one is using.

I can put fruits and vegetables on the crust. I can use one of the pizza paddles to put my pizza in the oven if it is empty. I can use the paddle to take the pizza out and give it to the adult who is with me. I can use the cash register. I can put the plastic fruits and vegetables back into their bins. I can sort them by color.

Corn Husk Dolls

There is a curved table with seats. A helper is sitting behind the table. If there is an empty seat, I can sit down. The helper will give me some corn husks and show me how to make a figure. If I need help, I can ask the adult who is with me. I can take home the figure that I make.
