description

Pacing in Europe for ten years, Julien Menand has found home in photography and welcomes the viewer into this ambiguous world. Pleased to look at what escapes his gaze, to enter an image that is observed, he is constantly led to question what he sees and to seek what he could find beyond. These trompes-l'oeil involve the space of and in photography and question the essence of exhibiting: What is given to see when an artwork is shown? Looking for a Neo-Pictorialist aesthetic of photography, Julien offers purely photographic "views", captured on large and medium film format.

Pacing in Europe for ten years, Julien Menand has found home in photography and welcomes the viewer into this ambiguous world. Asked to look at what escapes his eye, to enter an image that is observed, he is led to question constantly what he sees, and to look what he could find beyond. These images en trompe-l’oeil involve the space of and in photography and question the essence of the exhibition: what is given to see and whom is this addressing ? Looking for a Neo-Pictorialism aesthetic emancipated from painting, Julien offers purely photographic «views», captured on large and medium film format.

Georgia in my mind / Photographic Essay

The poetic of my work lies in the staging and pictorial construction. The theme is subjectivized, and is described and revised according to my feelings and my culture. There is no explicit «referent» to these images as such. They do not refer to a condition or a time that needs to exist historically or so-cially. They reveal something peculiar to me. That’s why I see some of my work more as an essay in photography, going empty minded and trying to photograph through a felt-sense as a way to keep distant from the «all media principles».

In these essay, out of a date and a place, you will find nothing more as a glance.... / Tbilissi, 2011
