What does it feel like in Kenya?
What is the weather like? What should we pack?
Hmm…
If Kenya is near the equator, what is the climate like?
The climate varies in Kenya.
The weather can be different depending on where you go!
We are going to talk about two different climates.
Mount Kenya• Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain
in Africa.• It has rainforests and bamboos.• It is home to the elephant, buffalo, monkey,
antelope, and giant forest hog.
Lake Turkana• Known as the Jade
Sea because the colors from the algae turn from blue to jade to green.
• It is the largest desert lake in the world.
• The lake is home to some 22,000 crocodiles, hippos and fish.
Amboseli National Park• Can view Mt. Kilamanjaro
– Africa’s highest mountain.
• Mt. Kilamanjaro rises 19,340 ft and is located across the Tanzanian Border.
• This is the BEST place to see elephants!
• Buffalo, lions and cheetahs roam here.
Mombasa• Mombasa is Kenya’s
second largest city.
• Mombasa has a north and south coast.
• People vacation on the beaches.
• The beaches are of the finest pure white sands in the world.
Maasi Mara• Kenya’s largest
population of lions.
• During the dry season, over a million wildebeests move in.
• Great view of lions, elephants, rhinos, gazelles, cheetahs and leopards.

• Linda learns about people of East Africa, the Masai. She feels a kinship and begins to wonder what it would be like if she were Masai.
• Linda lives in an apartment building with neighbors.

• Masai lives in a hut that sits in a circle around a large animal pen called a kraal.
• Linda eats with her whole family.
• Masai and the men eat together, and woman and girls eat together.

• Linda would climb stairs to get to her apartment. She would look out her window to see the city.
• Masai would lift a cowhide flap to get in his home. He would have no windows to look out.

• Linda would have a caged hamster for a pet.
• Masai would have cows, zebras and ostriches on the land around him.

• Linda would bathe in scented soaps.
• Masai would wash with cow’s fat mixed with red clay.

• Linda and Masai would love and respect their grandparents.
• Linda and Masai would look alike. They would have the same brown skin, over high cheek bones and the same eyes that slant up.
