The Monthly Weather Review - New South Wales is produced twelve times each year by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's NewSouth Wales Climate Services Centre.

It is intended to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in New SouthWales for the month.

To keep the Monthly Weather Reviewas timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although everyeffort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete quality controlprocedures have been carried out. Major discrepancies will be noted in later issues.

We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Reviewis appropriate to the needs of its readers. If you have any comments orsuggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us:

    Units of measurement

Except where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (C), rainfallin millimetres (mm), and wind speedin kilometres per hour(km/h).

    Observation times and periods

Each station in New South Wales makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over thepast 24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:

Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hoursfrom 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that day.

Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that day.

Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.

Daily rainfallis for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have occurred onthe previous calendar day.

Monthly rainfallis for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.

Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

    Climatological values

The climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from all availableyears of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannotthen be calculated reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from available observations from all available years of record. The number of years can vary substantially from site to site.

FloodingFlooding in NSW was widespread and severe duringMarch, with more than 75% of the state affected byFlood Warnings at the beginning of the month.

Sixty-three Local Government Areas were declaredNatural Disasters by the end of March, the largestarea of disasters in NSW since the floods of late2010.

The most significant flooding occurred in southernNSW throughout the month as a result ofrecord-breaking rainfall between 27 February and 4March, particularly along the Lachlan andMurrumbidgee systems. Several major townsexperienced their most severe flood since at least1974, with peak floods reaching 10.56 m at WaggaWagga and 10.55 m at Forbes early in the month,

while later major peaks include 8.99 m at Hay.

The SES performed at least 171 Flood Rescues duringthis event, with almost 4000 Requests for Assistanceand tens of thousands of people either isolated byfloodwaters or evacuated for some period of timeduring the event including parts of major centressuch as Hay and Wagga Wagga. Minor to moderateflooding was also experienced along the Bega,Bogan, Castlereagh, Hunter, Namoi, Macquarie, andHawkesbury-Nepean systems, including theevacuation of areas of western Sydney as well asparts of Bega, Goulburn, Cooma, Tumut and

Queanbeyan. Several dams also reached full capacityduring this event including Warragamba, resulting inminor flooding in parts of western Sydney.

Meanwhile, floodwaters continued to progressthrough the Darling system in northwest NSW duringthe month, with major flooding in the Bourke region.

East Coast LowA short-lived East Coast Low on the 8th and 9thbrought widespread heavy rain to the Metropolitanregion and south coast, as well as wind gusts as highas 115 km/h at Montague Island. Falls of up to

42 mm in 60 minutes in the city caused widespreadflash flooding during peak hour, including 17 floodrescues and the disruption of roads and rail services, with 768 Requests for Assistance to the SES. Falls ofup to 100 mm along the south coast also causedflash flooding, including the isolation of 120 schoolstudents near Moss Vale, as well as exacerbatingexisting flooding along the Bega River.

    Synoptic summary

March 2012 began with a semi-stationary lowpressure trough situated over southern NSW andextending into northwest WA. This drew moisttropical air into the state, while northeasterly windsdrew further moisture from off the east coast ofAustralia. This feature, in addition to several smallembedded lows, drove sustained heavy rain acrosssouthern and western NSW between 27 Februaryand 4 March, in addition to very cold maximumtemperatures. The record-breaking accumulatedtotals led to widespread flooding in the southernparts of NSW and northern Victoria, including thehighest floods since 1974 at several locations.

As a high pressure system pushed into the state onthe 5th rainfall eased in inland NSW, although coolsoutheasterly winds continued to drive colder daysacross the state, as well as coastal rainfall. On the8th, a short-lived East Coast Low developed in a

coastal low pressure trough, triggering heavy rainfallacross the central and southern coastal regions inaddition to strong winds, before breaking down onthe 9th.

Over the following days, a high pressure system overthe state drove generally clear conditions, withtemperatures warming in southern NSW from the13th as winds shifted from southerly to northerly. This warm spell was broken as a second low pressuretrough moved into southern NSW on the 16th,bringing renewed rain and cool conditions tosouthern NSW, extending to most of the state on the

    17th.

Clear conditions returned from the 18th, with rainrestricted to coastal showers triggered by easterlywinds, while a further low pressure trough and coldfront that crossed southern NSW on the 21st hadlittle rainfall impact. From the 22nd, a high pressuresystem lingered in the Bight, directing cool southernair into NSW. This brought very cool temperatures toNSW but generally clear conditions, which persistedeven as the system moved eastward across the state.A further low pressure trough that lingered over thestate from the 27th brought little rainfall beyond the

alpine regions, but continued the cooler days acrossthe state, with clear, mild conditions persisting forthe rest of the month.

The average maximum temperature across NSWduring March was 26.61 C, 1.95 C below thehistorical average. This was the 4th coldest March onrecord for NSW, and the coldest since 1994. The cooltemperatures were associated with well aboveaverage rainfall and cloud cover during the month, particularly in the southwest of the state wheretemperatures were more than 3 C below average. All of NSW experienced cooler than average daysduring the month, with more than 80% of the staterecording temperatures in the coolest 10% of years.Ten stations including Cooma recorded their coldestMarch on record, with an additional 19 cooler thanany March since at least 1987.

Temperatures were particularly cool in southernNSW at the start of the month, associated with aheavy rain event and sustained overcast conditions.Large areas were more than 8 C below average

between the 1st and 3rd, with record cold atBathurst and Young. Temperatures remained wellbelow average until the 8th, with closer to normaltemperatures during the following week. A furtherlow pressure trough brought very cold days insouthwest NSW on the 16th, while southerly windsdrove several days of cold temperatures betweenthe 22nd and 25th. The only periods where thestatewide average maximum temperature was abovethe historical average for March were between the13th and 15th and on the 31st, with only three daysrecording temperatures above 35 C anywhere in thestate.

The hottest day was on the 15th, with 36.2 C atMenindee Post Office and 35.8 C at Tibooburra PostOffice, followed by 35.7 C at Williamtown RAAF onthe 1st.

This is the coolest March since 2005, butonly slightly cooler than normal when compared todata since 1910. Most of the state experiencedslightly below average nights during the month, withcoolest nights in the west, including the coolestMarch nights since 1987 at Tibooburra, whiletemperatures were closest to average along thecoast. Nights were warmest during the first part ofthe month when cloud cover was high, whilerelatively cool nights persisted between the 23rd and26th as southerly winds drove cool Antarctic air intothe state.

The coldest night was on the 25th, with 4.0 C atPerisher Valley AWS and 3.0 C at Charlotte Pass(Kosciusko Chalet), followed by 2.5 C at CharlottePass (Kosciusko Chalet) on the 24th.

    Rainfall

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of119.59 mm during March 2012, more than doublethe historical average of 48.98 mm. This was thesecond wettest March on record for the state, following 155.31 mm during March 1956. At least 64stations had their wettest March on record during

the month, with a further 156 wetter than anyMarch in the last 20 years. This is the 5th consecutivemonth with above average rainfall in NSW and theMurray Darling Basin, associated with the 20112012La Nia event in the Pacific.

Rainfall was heaviest in the south and west of thestate, most of which recorded more than three timesthe monthly average, with close to three quarters ofthe state recording rainfall in the wettest 10% ofyears. In particular, locations such as Ivanhoerecorded more than seven times the historicalaverage, with the monthly total close to the annual

average. The Murray Darling Basin recorded92.09 mm, almost three times the March average of38.55 mm and the fourth wettest on record, although slightly drier than March 2010 (95.54 mm).

Most of the rain was associated with a very severerain event in southern and western NSW during thefirst week of the month, with close to normal fallsduring the second half of the month as the20112012 La Nia event began to break down. While further rain fell in coastal areas, almost no rainwas recorded in the Narrabri region of northern NSWduring the month, with falls below average across

    most of the northeast.

The majority of the rain fell between the 1st and 5thof March, as a semi-stationary low pressure troughbrought sustained heavy rainfall across western andsouthern NSW. Most of the state recorded at least50 mm, with large areas exceeding 150 mm,including a statewide average accumulation of97.94 mm. At least 58 stations broke their dailyrecord for March at some point during this event, including daily falls as high as 186 mm at CharlottePass and 175 mm at Yanco, more than three timesthe previous record. Five-day and 7-day accumulatedtotals were particularly significant across large partsof southern NSW, some of which are detailed inSpecial Climate Statement 39.

On the 8th and 9th, a short-lived East Coast Lowbrought further heavy rain to the Metropolitanregion and south coast. Daily totals to 9 am on the8th reached 134.4 mm at Lucas Heights and109.4 mm at Observatory Hill, the wettest day since2007, of which 42 mm fell over just one hour.Robertson in southern NSW also recorded 106.2 mmon the 8th, breaking the record set during an ECL in

March 2011.Conditions were clear across the state until the 16th,when a low pressure trough brought further falls tosouthern and central NSW, reaching 82 mm at

Fitzroy Falls on the 17th. Over the subsequent days, rain was restricted to the north coast, reaching63 mm at Dorrigo on the 20th. The remainder ofMarch was dry across the state, broken only byisolated thunderstorm activity.

The wettest overall was Charlotte Pass (Kosciusko

Chalet) with 607.6 mm, followed by Thredbo Villagewith 524.5 mm, followed by Perisher Valley AWSwith 522.0 mm.

The driest overall was Bellata Post Office with 0 mm,followed by Narrabri (Murrumbilla) with 1.4 mm,followed by Copeton Dam with 1.6 mm.

The wettest single day was on the 4th, with186.5 mm at Charlotte Pass (Kosciusko Chalet),175.2 mm at Yanco Agricultural Institute, and165.5 mm at Thredbo Village.
