Any rescue professional who puts their life on the line to save others will tell you that when an emergency kicks in, they just go. The last thing on their minds is whether or not their equip-ment will work.

No one understands this better than the United States Coast Guard who put their lives on the line daily. In 2011, when Mustang Survival won a five year contract to supply the USCG with a brand new dry suit series specifically tailored for their mission critical needs, it was their invaluable feedback that ultimately drove the development of Mustang Survival’s next generation of water rescue dry suits; the Sentinel™ Series.

The Sentinel™ dry suits address two critical factors that can hinder a rescuer’s effectiveness – the suits’ fit and field repair capabilities. Based on two years of in depth research, the Sen-tinel™ sizing platform takes into account seven key measure-ments that affect range of motion and comfortable fit. Further-more, Sentinel™ suits’ neck and wrist seals and minor punctures can be field repaired and ready for use in less than an hour.

A LeADer IN CoMMerCIAL MArINe SAFeTy America's First and only Inflatable work vestAccording to the National Institute of occupational Safety and Health (NIoSH), drowning after a fall overboard is the second leading cause of death among all commercial fishermen. There is no question work vests are essential, but what do commercial workers really think about wearing PFDs?

In a study commissioned by NIoSH, six PFDs, including Mustang Survival’s MD3188 Inflatable work vest, were tested by 400 Alaskan fishermen based on usabil-ity factors most important while they work.

of the six PFDs selected, the MD3188 was the highest rated PFD based on its lightweight design, durability, easy to clean fabric, and hydrostatic activation system that eliminates accidental infla-tion due to rain and spray. The ease-of-use and comfort made it a favorite on deck and the only PFD in the study to receive a four-star rating. The MD3188 is also the FIrST and oNLy USCG approved inflatable work vest on the market.

HIT™ inflator technology has been used for over 10 years by professional and recreational users. Hydrostatic pressure is applied to all objects submerged in water. The HIT™ inflator needs only to be submerged 4 inches (10 cm) for the hydrostatic pressure to open a pressure valve releasing a pin mechanism, automatically inflating the PFD.

often the success of a rescue depends on how visible victims are in the water and it’s no wonder high visibility aids such as reflective tapes and beacons are essential parts of lifesaving equip-ment. But to get to the very basics of on-water visibility, our research and Development team wanted to find out which color is the most conspicuous when floating on the water.

our r&D team took the lead on con-ducting a study on high visibility col-ors, partly sponsored by workSafeBC's research Secretariat program, and found that fluorescent green routinely beat standard oranges, reds, and yel-lows in terms of visual detection in water – particularly in low-light condi-tions.

Swift water rescuers are all too familiar with The Higgins and Langley Memorial Fund and the haunting award-winning video and tune of ”ready for the Storm”. Created by award-winning documentary filmmaker Nancy rigg, the film is a real-istic documentation of swift water rescue professionals and the dangers they face.

In honor of earl Higgins and Jeffrey Lang-ley, who both gave their lives to save oth-ers, the Higgins and Langley Memorial Awards were established in 1993 by a committee of swift water professionals and recognizes preparedness, teamwork, and success under extreme conditions.

In just 20 minutes, cold water can deprive you of all mental and physi-cal capacities, leading to hypothermia, unconsciousness and even death. our team of engineers have done exten-sive research to understand cold water survival. How long a person can survive in cold water primarily depends on the water’s temperature, exposure time, and the thermal insulation of the vic-tim’s protective clothing.

To create the most effective protection attainable, we begin by evaluating the clothing’s insulation (measured with the unit ”Clo”). we determine the rate at which heat is lost from the body, as well as the difference in temperature between the skin and the water. From these values, predictions can be made of the rate at which a person’s body temperature will drop in cold water.

wHAT IS ”CLo” AND wHAT DoeS IT MeAN?

”Clo” is a measurement of the thermal comfort of a suit or device (CLothing Insulation). one ”Clo” represents the thermal comfort of an average person in business clothing in a room temper-ature indoor environment. Fractions of this thermal comfort are what are per-ceived when worn in the water. each of the values are below 1.0 because water transfers heat out of the body 25 times faster than air.
