Musqueam - Community Meeting Notice
Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment
Tuesday, JUNE 11, 2019 5:30 – 7:00
Musqueam Cultural Pavilion
In 2009, a Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) was carried out to
identify if any of our lands may have become contaminated in the past.
Musqueam has hired Teranis Consulting Ltd. to collect soil, sediment and
water samples from our lands where the previous Phase 1 ESA identified the
possibility of contamination. Teranis has a lot of experience working on
similar projects with Nations located throughout the lower Mainland and BC
and will only work on our lands alongside Musqueam members.
This is an important opportunity for our Nation to identify the location of
contamination on our land, so that these issues can be fully assessed and
addressed by Canada in the near future and to protect our children, land and
resources.
Teranis will be collecting a lot of samples throughout Musqueam IR#2 and #4 and will
use a drill rig and or Back Hoe to collect soil and water samples deep below the ground
surface. Teranis will be working in the following general areas:
Lots that have received soil (Fill) of unknown
quality, such as near the Cultural Pavilion).
Musqueam Golf and learning Centre
Investigating the Highbury Tunnel.
Fraser River, sediment and surface water
sampling.
Vehicle and boat repair areas.
Crown Place Site
Western Foreshore – Mali site
estern Foreshore – Mali dump
Please Note; Teranis will be working throughout
the reserve. Should you have any questions or
concerns about the proposed Phase 2 ESA, if it will
affect your property or if you have any information
regarding other environmental issues on our lands,
please do not hesitate to contact Kim Guerin.

The Musqueam people have lived in our present location for thousands of years. Our traditional
territory once occupied much of what is now Vancouver and surrounding areas. The name Musqueam relates back to the
flowering plant, məθkʷəy̓, which grows in the Fraser River estuary. There is a story that has been passed on from
generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) – People of the
məθkʷəy̓ plant. Although a metropolitan city has developed in the heart of Musqueam territory, our community
maintains strong cultural and traditional beliefs. Today our population flourishes and we are a strong community of over
1,300 members. To learn more about Musqueam, please visit www.musqueam.bc.ca.

Safe Drinking Water Monitoring Program Charlene Campbell-Wood
Health Canada
Guidance for Safe Drinking Water in Canada: From Intake to Tap
This guidance document focuses on a multi-barrier approach as the most effective way to ensure Canada's drinking water
supplies are clean, safe and reliable. It addresses water quality issues from intake to tap, including treatment, verification of
drinking water quality, operation and maintenance of storage and distribution systems, and public awareness. The approach
recognizes that while individual barriers may be inadequate in effectively removing or preventing contamination, and
therefore in protecting public health, together they provide greater assurance that the water will be safe to drink over the
long term. The guidance is designed specifically for the water industry (public and private), including managers and
practitioners responsible for ensuring safe drinking water.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Unprecedented in scope and philosophy, leləḿ is a significant four-phased, 21.44-acre masterplanned community within the University Endowment Lands (UEL). Adjacent to the University of British Columbia campus, the development sits to the northwest of the University Golf Club, fronting University Boulevard. leləḿ supports a diverse and inclusive mix of housing types, with a total of 1,250 homes for an estimated population of 2,500 residents. Thirty thousand square feet of commercial space add a vibrant mixed-use capability to the development, with a multitude of natural and built amenities on site, including restaurants and retail, as well as a community centre, daycare, and supermarket. The adjacent UBC campus is an historic, established and robust community offering a wide array of additional amenities. Importantly, leləḿ is surrounded by 874 hectares of Pacific Spirit Park; hiking and walking trails, as well as nature preserves, cover over 63% of the site. Carefully integrating the development into its natural surroundings, leləḿ offers a lifestyle that is connected to nature.
leləḿ is a thoughtful reconsideration of modern day development, incorporating the ancient Musqueam values of interconnection through thinking, feeling, and experiencing. The three key design principles operate in line with this sentiment: Be Responsible, Be Inclusive, and Be Respectful.
