School of MUSIc

“Through the Indiana State University School of

Music, I was given the opportunity to learn, develop,

and execute the skills not just to be a successful choir

director, but also to be a successful professional.”

—Tyler Lemen, Director of Choirs, ‘12

Cathedral High School

Indianapolis, IN

Your journey to a career in music begins at Indiana State University, where you’ll find opportunities to pursue the road that interests you—whether it’s teaching, performing, working in the music industry, or continued study toward an advanced degree.

While pursuing your degree and your passion for music, you will thrive in small classes while receiving personal attention from dedicated faculty members who are extraordinary musicians in their own right.

Located in Terre Haute, Indiana, the School of Music is part of a thriving arts community. Numerous works of public art, including large murals painted by Indiana State students, can be found throughout downtown. The city is also home to a symphony orchestra, youth orchestra, children’s choir, art museum, and an annual blues festival.

Like to get out and about? There’s no shortage of arts activities on campus to enjoy—and a majority of them are free! In addition to numerous faculty, visiting artist and student recitals and concerts, the School of Music presents the nationally recognized Contemporary Music Festival. Indiana State hosts touring musical and theatrical performances through the Performing Arts Series, and the University Art Gallery showcases work by national and international artists as well as faculty and students.

No matter what path you choose, you will leave with a solid foundation in music—a result of performing in ensembles, taking private lessons, and participating in a steady stream of community activities and classroom instruction.
