MusicMachine – REUGE by MB&F

MusicMachine is a music box that looks and sounds out of this world. It contains all the

traditional, time-honoured elements of a superlative high-end music box, but designed andconfigured in a totally unconventional way.

But then you would expect nothing less from a collaboration between R!" and MB#$.R!", the premier manufacturer of music boxes on the planet, with nearly %&' years ofexpertise and experience. (nd MB#$, the award-winning artistic and micro-engineeringlaboratory acclaimed for its avant-garde, three-dimensional )orological Machines.

*ith its dual propellers and twin silver cylinders mounted on sleek outrigger landing gear,MusicMachine looks like a spaceship hailing from a galaxy far, far away.

ach of the cylinders on MusicMachine plays three tunes, all personally selected by MB#$founder and creative director, Maximilian B+sser. n the left, may the $orce be with you with

the /0tar *ars1 theme, /Imperial March1 from /2he mpire 0trikes Back1, and the theme from/0tar 2rek1. Back on earth, the right cylinder plays 3ink $loyd1s /(nother Brick in the *all1,4eep 3urple1s /0moke on the *ater1 and 15ohn 6ennon1s /Imagine1 7 all tunes synonymouswith MB#$8s radical, nonconformist attitude.

“Like many kids, saving the world was my full time job when I was a boy,”  says B+sser. “ForMusicMachine, I delved into my childhood dreams and fantasies inspired by heroes such asLuke kywalker and !aptain "ames #$ %irk$”

ne of the biggest challenges for R!" was respecting the mechanical symmetry ofMB#$1s design, and it meant breaking with a few music box conventions to achieve it.MusicMachine actually has two independent movements, each comprising9 winding propeller:

mainspring barrel ;looking like a piston under the propeller<: hori=ontal cylinder with pinscreating three melodies: and vertical comb with individual hand-tuned teeth sounding eachnote.

*hen music is playing, the speed that the cylinder unwinds at is governed by an air regulatorin the form of a circular fan outside each propeller-topped, piston-shaped mainspring barrel.

*hile it would have been much easier to duplicate the two movements and >ust change themelodies, MB#$8s original concept called for perfect symmetry and if the movements wereidentical, the comb on one cylinder would not be on the outside. 0o R!" took theunprecedented step of configuring the two movements as mirror images of one another, whichmeant completely inverting the design of the movement components and architecture.

2he end result is a visual and acoustic tour de force that even sci-fi fan B+sser finds hard tobelieve9 “&'()' is the "edi master of music bo*es$ It is incredible how &'()' has beenable to turn our design into reality$ +nd thats not even mentioning how good it sounds-”

R!" ? @urt @upper is eAually delighted with the outcome of the collaboration9 “M./Fcame to us with this radical concept and we have shown that, when it comes to high0endmusic bo*es, &'()' will make dreams come true$”

MusicMachine – a music bo not 'ust fo" the ()st centu"y* but the (+th centu"y,Mechanical Music boxes produce melodies by way of tuned teeth on a steel comb beingplucked by pins on a revolving cylinder. Music box movements share many similarities withtheir horological counterparts, both technically and aesthetically9 nergy derived from a coiledspring is transferred by a gear train and the unwinding speed is carefully regulated. )igh-endmusic box components are even finely finished similar to high-end watch movements.

o wonder, then, that since music boxes first appeared in the early %Nth century, 0wit=erland,the home of fine watchmaking, became the hub of high-Auality music box production. In %JO&,?harles Reuge was a pioneer of the genre when he set up his first musical pocket-watch shopin 0ainte-?roix, 0wit=erland. early %&' years on, and R!" is the premier manufacturer ofhigh-end music boxes on the planet and is still based in 0ainte-?roix.

*hile R!"8s collection has since grown to offer both Auintessentially classical pieces and  contemporary designs 7 including a service for specially-commissioned bespoke pieces 7 withMusicMachine, R!" has pushed the frontiers of music box design9 MusicMachine belongs

more to the E&th century than the E%stP

-ci.fi desi/nR!" created MusicMachine based on a futuristic spaceship design proposed by MB#$whose founder, Maximilian B+sser, is a keen fan of all the great sci-fi film and 2D series. Incollaboration with ?(6 design graduate Qin *ang, MB#$ developed a concept that cleverlyincorporated all the essential music box features 7 musically-tuned combs, pinned cylinders, winding mechanisms, mainspring barrels, regulators and acoustically-optimised case 7 whilestill managing to make it look like a streamlined, hypersonic spaceship.

0he melodiesMusicMachine doesn8t >ust look like something from a science fiction film: three of the

melodies have been beamed directly from sci-fi classics.

n the left cylinder, MusicMachine is armed with the theme from /0tar 2rek1 by 5erry"oldsmith, the theme from /0tar *ars1 by 5ohn *illiams and /Imperial March1 from /2hempire 0trikes Back1, also by cinematic music maestro 5ohn *illiams. *hile the first two arestirring anthems evoking heroism and adventure, the latter will have you battening down thehatches and raising the shields as it signals the imminent arrival of the villainous 4arth Dader.

But MB#$ is much more than sci-fi, their creations are edgy and iconoclastic 7 certainlyrelative to the rest of the high-end watch world 7 and this rock /n1 roll attitude is neatly con>uredin the three melodies contained on the right cylinder9 5ohn 6ennon1s classic anti-war anthem/Imagine1, 4eep 3urple1s riff-tastic /0moke on the *ater1 and 3ink $loyd1s memorable social

commentary tune /(nother Brick in the *all1.

(gain B+sser drew on his youth when choosing these, and the selection was a daunting task. “In addition to the science fiction themes, I wanted to include three songs that were importantto me during the first 12 years of my life,”  he says. “From a long list, I managed to whittle itdown to three, but it was 3uite an ordeal-”

Faithfully c"eatin/ music1 mechanicallynce MB#$ had confirmed the melodies, it was over to R!" to create them mechanically,a challenge that R!" took in its stride. $irstly, a R!" musician examined the pieces ofmusic and identified the most recognisable passages from each. 2he musician then set aboutrecreating these passages for the music box, keeping in mind that one cylinder would contain

the three rock melodies, and the other cylinder would have the three sci-fi inspired melodies, and that each cylinder1s pins would pluck one E-note comb.

*orking out these two groups of three arrangements, each one limited to between E& and F&seconds, and the multitude of notes that these entail ;some notes are used by all threemelodies: some notes are exclusive to >ust one melody< represents a considerable technicaland artistic achievement in which the musician1s brain, sense of expression and emotional

dexterity top any computer.

0he combs2he two vertical combs look like air vent grills on either side of the vessel1s main body. achcomb contains the bespoke selection of E notes chosen by the R!" musician inaccordance with the three melodies that cylinder will play. ach comb forms a uniAue pair withits corresponding cylinder: neither can play properly without the other.

2he combs are hand-tuned from a uniAue steel alloy specifically selected for its acousticimpact. $or bass notes, the weight of the tooth is extended at the back by the traditionalmethod of adding lead. ( machine then tests the freAuency of each tooth and minute amountsof material are removed to accurately tune each note. 2he hand-operated tools that R!"

uses in this process have all been developed in-house.

2iny transparent, synthetic feathers are added behind the bass note teeth, acting as dampersso that the note resonates optimally. 2he comb is finally attached to a brass /vibration plate1passing through the main hull, with six heat-blued screws. 2he vibration plate transfers thesound to the case, which in turn amplifies the sound even more. nce the comb is fitted, themusician1s ear is reAuired again for the final fine-tuneP

0he cylinde"s2he beautifully hand-finished cylinders gleam like a pair of imposing reactors atopMusicMachine1s main hull. 2he cylinders essentially contain /the scores1 of the melodies, withas many as %,F'' precision-placed pins that pluck the teeth of the comb as the cylinder

revolves. 2he R!" musician determines precisely where to place every single pin. 2hepins are shaved then polished to ensure uniformity of length. $inally a special hot resin isapplied inside the cylinder, which, when hardened, rigidly fixes the pins to maximise soundAuality.

nce one melody is played, the cylinder moves slightly along its long axis, and this change ofposition aligns the right pins with the right teeth to play the next melody. ach melody lastsapproximately K& seconds and corresponds to one complete revolution of the cylinder. 2hecylinders are linked via visible gear trains to MusicMachine8s rear engine-room.

Fan "e/ulato"sither side of the propeller-like winding levers, are distinctive vertical circular panels. *hile

these look as though they may be radar dishes to navigate an asteroid field or force fieldgenerating devices to repel enemy proton torpedoes, they are actually the cylinder speedregulators. *hen fully wound, the main springs tend to turn the cylinders faster than whennearly unwound. 2o compensate, these circular fan air regulators provide exponentially moreresistance when rotating faster than slower, allowing for a constant revolution ;a similarsystem is found in many minute repeater watches<.

Fusela/e* st"uts* landin/ pods and landin/ platfo"m?rafted in white or black lacAuered walnut, MusicMachine1s sleek fuselage amplifies soundtransmitted from the brass vibration plate centrally housed within the case. 2his plate alsoconducts the vibrations along the curved, lateral struts and outrigger-style landing pods 7 inbead-blasted, anodised aluminium ;black matte-anodised for the black version< 7 which in turn

carry the vibrations down to MusicMachine1s landing platform. 2his lacAuered timber platformnot only further amplifies the enchanting melodies, but also showcases the spacecraft1saesthetic beauty.

REUGE – the p"emie" manufactu"e" of music boes in the wo"ld*ith nearly %&' years of expertise and experience, R!" is positioned as the only premierproducer of music boxes in the world today, creating mechanical music boxes that aretechnically, acoustically and aesthetically superlative. *hile R!" has a comprehensivecollection of both classical and contemporary music boxes, the brand also prides itself on itsability to create bespoke pieces or limited series ;like MusicMachine< for discerning clients.

R!" is not only a master of music boxes but also a master of /thinking outside the box1: theR!" mentality is to respect tradition, but at the same time move forward with beautifulcontemporary music boxes for the E%st century.

It was in %JO& that ?harles Reuge established his first musical pocket-watch shop in 0ainte-?roix, 0wit=erland. ?harles Reuge was a pioneer, managing to incorporate a musical cylinderand a miniature comb into a watch movement. )is son (lbert Reuge converted the family8satelier into a small factory in %JJO and R!" musical movements began to feature in themost unlikely of ob>ects, including powder compacts and cigarette lighters. "uido Reuge

presided over the brand for much of the E'th century, for over O' years.

(n innovative driving force, "uido built the current R!" manufacture in 0ainte-?roix in%NK' and expanded the company. In the %NO's and /'s, R!" diversified, taking over themanufacture and marketing of mechanical singing birds of Bontems and schle and alsobegan to extend its knowledge base, developing the skills and capacity to create or replicatevirtually any melody. 0ince E''O, @urt @upper has been ? of R!" and under hisguidance the brand has developed a particular ability to customi=e and create bespoke musicboxes.
