Making Music

Music is a set of pleasing sounds. Sound can only be made when something vibrates.

Musical instruments are used to make music.

Musical instruments are divided into three basic groups.

Stringed Instruments

The pitch is changed by changing the length of the string.The loudness is changed by the energy applied to the strings.

One group is the stringed instruments.

The strings of these instruments are vibrated by either strumming them by hand or rubbing them with a bow.

Wind Instruments

The pitch is changed by changing the length the air is traveling.The loudness is changed by the energy applied by the air.

Another group is the wind instruments.

These instruments are vibrated by forcing air though them. Wind instruments are divided into two subgroups. The woodwindsand the brass.

Percussion Instruments

The pitch is changed by changing by the size of the instrument.The loudness is changed by the energy used to hit the instrument .

The last group is the percussion instruments.

These instruments are vibrated by striking them.
