Music: World vs. God Lesson 2 & 3 Slide 2 Review from last week 1.Music is a hot button with many Christians today. 2.Music is becoming a personal god. 3.Music invades our culture in ways never known to mankind. 4.Music is a very Biblical matter. God has tons to say about music. Slide 3 QUOTE There is probably no other cultural activity [as music] which is so all- pervasive and which reaches into, shapes and often controls so much human behavior. -Philip Merriam Slide 4 The Idol of Entertainment We are a culture so driven by entertainment that it must be with us at all timeson demand, at our fingertips at any instant! (Music Matters, Pg.25) Entertainment has put our minds in neutral and has allowed our hearts to be manipulated. We are overwhelmed with entertainment. Slide 5 To name a few Our World LONGS for Entertainment! Slide 6 Music as Entertainment Music is the gauge by which you can determine what the world is pursuing. In order to take the spiritual temperature of an individual or a society, one must mark the music. -Plato Slide 7 Somewhere along the way, Christians began to believe that music is for entertainment--that it is primarily for our enjoyment. (Music Matters, pg 27) This view has infiltrated our churches and has become all about us. Slide 8 World vs. God GOD Slide 9 Col. 1:16- For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible...all things were created by him, and for him: John 1:3- All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:10- He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. Rom. 11:36- For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Rev. 4:11- Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. And many moreGen. 1:1, Ps. 89:11, Isa. 44:24, Acts 17:24, 1 Cor. 8:6, Eph 3:9, Heb. 1:2; 2:10too many to list! Slide 10 The Basics about Music Catawba Youth Group Lesson 3 Slide 11 Quote Music has a power of forming the character, and should therefore be introduced into the education of the young. -Aristotle Slide 12 Amoral vs Moral Amoral- being neither moral nor immoral (Webster Dictionary) Many people believe that music is amoral (neutral) (non- emotional). The sound doesnt effect me, just the lyrics. Do you want to know who those people are? The CCM Artists and their supporters. The CCM Side says: Music is neutral. Therefore, I as a Christian can use any type of music I want (jazz, punk, rap, disco, heavy metal, pop, country, rhythm, and blues, etc.) to worship the Lord. It is all appropriate, and no lines can be drawn except those of personal taste. As long as my music mentions God in some way, it is useful for evangelism. (Fisher, pg. 52). Slide 13 CCM side quotes John Styll, CCM Magazine: What makes music Christian anyway? Ill say it again: Theres no such thing as Christian music. Thats because all kinds of music are capable of expressing Christian thought. Its not the music thats Christian, its the lyrics. (emphasis mine). David Meece, CCM Artist: Basically you have to focus on the lyrics, and what the song is saying. That is my criteria to decide whether the song is right or wrong. It has nothing to do with music style. Rick Warren Quote: The Purpose Driven Life, (pg 65-66.) The Christian Rockers Creed- We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all music was created equal, that no instrument or style of music is in itself evil that the diversity of musical expression which flows forth from man is but one evidence of the boundless creativity of our Heavenly Father. Many more quotes, not enough time Slide 14 Amoral vs Moral, cont. It is wrong to think that music is neutral, amoral, or void of communication by itself. (The Battle for Christian Music, Pg 50) **This is where CCM supporters go wrong. They believe that music is neutral (amoral) and that the lyrics justify the worldly music style.** I will prove it to you in 3 Areas: 1.Practically 2.Worldly 3.Biblically Slide 15 Practical Example #1 C note is that a good note or a bad note? C Put that C note together with other notes and you have a song that delivers a message and influences you in some way. Slide 16 Practical Example #2 These colors right now are neutral, but put them in the hand of a artist good artbad art Again, two totally different outcomes! Slide 17 Practical Example #3 e Is that a good e or a bad e ? Prais e the Lord Or I hat e God Same letter but two totally different outcomes. Slide 18 What the World has to say about musics moral power Dr. Howard Hanson wrote in The American Journal of Psychiatry, Music is a curiously subtle art with innumerable, varying emotional connotations. It is made up of many ingredients and according to the proportions of those components, it can be soothing or invigorating, ennobling or vulgarizing. It has powers for evil as well as for good. A musician quoted in Cheetah Magazine, If the establishment knew what todays popular music is saying, not what the words are saying, but what the music itself is saying, they would just turn their thumb down on it. Theyd ban it. Theyd smash all the records and arrest anyone who tried to play it. Dr. Max Schoen wrote in The Psychology of Music, The.evidence for the non-neutrality of music is so overwhelming that it frankly amazes me that anyone should seriously say otherwise. Slide 19 The World says, cont. Newspaper Article: Sound Investments Muzak www.muzak.com Slide 20 Muzak The basic premise is simple. Music is a powerful tool. It can be as integral to your brand as your logo, the color of your walls and the product you sell. The right audio experience reinforces your brand and keeps customers coming back. Take a look and a listen to this very simple concept, and let us know if we can help create the right audio experience for your business. Slide 21 Slide 22 These businesses partner with Muzak in order to win you through the music that is played. These restaurants also partner with Muzak because they believe that music will influence you to eat there. Finally, these recreational businesses partner with Muzak because they believe that music is emotion by design. Slide 23 What the Bible has to say about musics moral power. Turn to Exodus 32:17-21 Moses and Joshua heard the noisesing Music encouraged pagan worship. Turn to Daniel 3:1-7 fall down and worship Turn to 1 Samuel 16:14-16, 23 King Saul / Davids harp playing Evil spirit is chased off when the right music is being played. Music is powerful! Turn to 2 Chronicles 5:12-14 Grand Opening of Solomons temple. Slide 24 What does this mean Music is not amoral (neutral) Music, of any type (lyrics or no lyrics), influences your emotions and morals. Slide 25 Review: MUSIC DOES COMMUNICATE! Which also means: Music ALWAYS has a message to deliver! Music ALWAYS has a message to deliver!
