The Mission of the Cedar Rapids Community School District Music
Teachers is to foster lifelong learners and consumers of music by
providing high quality music programs that promote essential opportu-
nities for all students, teach the whole child, develop 21st Century Skills,
and instill a love and joy for music.
Franklin Middle School was selected to receive the VH1 Save the Music “Keys and Kids” grant which includes $10,000 worth of new musical instruments. The instruments include a Casio Celviano Grand Hybrid Piano and three 3 Casio WK-7600 Music Work-stations with gig bags. The digital grand is described by Casio as the “most advanced technology in digital pianos.” It is designed to sound acoustic and has weighted keys to feel like an acoustic piano, but it does not need the regular tuning and maintenance that an acoustic piano requires.
This grant was created to “respond to the growing need for high-quality, functional pianos in public schools, and to provide even more students with a safe and inclusive community to be outstand-ing through the arts.” West Music partnered with VH1 and Casio to bring this opportunity to Franklin. The keyboards will be used in the choir and band programs while the grand hybrid piano will serve as the auditorium piano for concerts and rehearsals.

Jefferson Orchestra Receives Special Instrument Donation
Jefferson Orchestra received approximately $5,00 worth of supplies and two nice violins donated by Lanny Benishek from Urbandale, Iowa this fall. Lanny’s wife Lois passed away in early October from cancer, after being diagnosed just 7 weeks prior. He wanted her violins to be used instead of sit-ting in a closet, so he decided to choose Jefferson as he was 1973 graduate. Both of the violins are beautiful instruments with top quality cases. Lenny attended the October 23rd Or-chestra concert at Jefferson to see and hear the violins being played. “I am so excited to have two high quality violins in our inventory now and am very grateful for his donation,” said director Natalie Miller.
The Cedar Rapids School district always welcomes instru-ment donations and provides tax deduction forms to donors.
OPUS Honor Choir The following Cedar Rapids Community School District stu-
dents were selected for the OPUS Honor Choir. Students are
selected through a recorded audition process and performed at
the Iowa Music Educator’s Association conference in Ames on
November 16. The OPUS Honor Choir is open to students in
grades 5-9.

Valerie Shanley Awarded
Philip Sehmann
Excellence
in Teaching Award
Valerie Shanley, band director at Franklin Middle School, was selected to receive the 2017 Philip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award. This award was established by the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association in 1992 to recognize directors based on the following criteria: years of service in teaching, contributions to the NEIBA and IBA organizations, and providing a quality music education to their students and maintain-ing a quality band program at their school.
Valerie Shanley is in her 24th year of teaching young band students in Northeast Iowa and currently works with sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students at Franklin Middle School in Cedar Rapids. Previously, she taught at McKinley Middle School (Cedar Rapids), Excelsior Middle School (Linn-Mar), and the Olin School District. Shanley earned Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Education degrees from the University of Northern Iowa, and she is a member of the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (NEIBA), Iowa Bandmasters Association, and Jazz Educators of Iowa.
Shanley is active as a conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. She has conducted several honor bands for beginning musicians in Northeast Iowa, including the Marion, Five Seasons (Cedar Rapids), and Young Musicians’ (Prairie) honor bands. Shanley regularly serves as a guest clinician for area band programs and also as a clinician at the NEIBA concert band and jazz band festivals. She adjudicates for the Iowa High School Music Association Solo/Ensemble, Large Group, and All-State festivals, as well as the Ad-ventureland Festival of Bands. She has also served NEIBA as Publicity Chair. Shanley is especially pas-sionate about working with beginning band students in the jazz idiom. At Franklin, she leads Jazz Band Too, a 50-member group comprised mostly of students who have played their instruments for only a few months. She is also the director of the Kirkwood Middle School Jazz Band Camp, a weeklong summer camp for beginning and middle school band students. Groups under her direction have earned Division I ratings at concert band festivals and first-place finishes at jazz band competitions, and dozens of her stu-dents have been selected for the Iowa All-State Band and All-Iowa 8th Grade Honor Band.
In addition to her career as an educator, Shanley is in demand as a professional hornist throughout Iowa. She has been a member of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony for more than 20 years, is a long-time member of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, and substitutes regularly in the horn sections of Orchestra Iowa and the Des Moines Symphony. Shanley and her family reside in Cedar Rapids. Her husband, Steve, is a professor of music at Coe College and conductor of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band. Their children, Vivian and Evan, attend the Linn-Mar School District, where they are active in band, orchestra, and choir, and dance. In her free time, Shanley enjoys traveling, shopping, cooking, fine dining, and watching foot-ball.
