Message from the President

Hello to everyone and welcome back to another year of contests, festivals, board meetings, generalmeetings, lessons plans, recitals, CM, registration, deadlines, etc. etc.

yikesll! I don’t know about you but sometimes I don’t think I’m ready for the school/music year tostart no matter how much I think I’ve prepared for it. I ask myself ‘Why do I do this?‘. But, then Ihear those first few measures of ‘Ode to Joy’ (the Primer version) and I see the concentration andsense of accomplishment in a 6 year olds eyes, and I know exactly why I do it. I, like all of you, havegiven another human being the gift of music. I feel excited, happy for that student, and completelyconfident about what I am doing. It doesn’t matter if they turn out to be the next Vladamir Horowitzor Dave Brubeck or just playing for a hobby. I have started them down a beautiful road and that’sall that matters. That’s the great thing about music. It can take you anywhere you m to go.

But there is another reason why I am excited about this upcoming year and that is because of mynew postion in this organization. I spent July going through historical papers and articles relating toour branch and while I knew we had many wonderful teachers, I did not know all the facts aboutmany of you. I took this job as President because I saw that the talent we have in this branch isremarkable and provides a rare opportunity for a person like myself who is fairly new to the field.

Last year, a teacher casually asked me “What do you think is going to happen to our littleorganization?” An innocent enough question, but I never forgot it. I know exactly what I want tohappen to our organization. I want teacher involvement, teacher interaction, increasedmembership, stronger recruiting, and ongoing teacher education. I want us to check our egos at thedoor and foster a welcoming and respectful environment that encourages teachers who feel isolatedand atone. With 160 members, there should never be a teacher feeling like they have been left outin the cold in this very difficult business. && have successes and failures and sometimes justsharing those experiences can make a difference between a talented teacher staying in the field orcal l ing i t qui ts .

So, my questions to you are: Where do m want the organization to go? What are m goals forthe organization? How are you helping to bring those goats to reality? Are you networking withother teachers to initiate positive change? Music can take us wherever we want to go so don‘t be astranger. Come to meetings and socials. Get to know other teachers. Turn negative complaints in topositive change. Put your knowledge to good use and make this organization worth the dues we are

paying.

I look forward to getting to know all of you and working closely with you and I encourage you to callme with your ideas and concerns.

Section 1: There is a lot of general information given in the first 10 pages. Please be sure to read over these pages first.

Please examine the Reference Section at the back of the Syllabus. It starts onpage 77. There IS a list of the composers separated into chronological periods. There is an extra category added on to the Twentieth Century penod. Italphabetically lists the Pedagogical Composers of our day. These composers arealso Contemporary, and should not be considered a separate group.

The MTACSDGoodlin Foundation is funded primarily from the Helen B Goodlin estate donated to theMTACSD ten years ago to provide scholarships for young San Diego area music students. This non-profitFoundation was established by MTACSD to carry out her wishes by opening our scholarship auditions tonon-MTACSD teachers (IRS requirement) and awarding cash prizes using the interest earned on the Goodlinprinciple.

This Foundation was established by and is supervised by MTACSD. Because it is a public non-profitfoundation it must serve the needs of the larger community within the terms of Helen Goodlin’s wishes asstated in her will.

The Foundation has also received funds for specific prizes from individual trust funds: the Chet and JuneSchmidt award for first place Sr. Keyboard and the Apollo award for first place Sr. Instrumental. Theseprizes are paid annually in the amounts of $3200 and $3000 respectively. When interest rates on CDs were6%, the Foundation also awarded the graduating CM Seniors honoraria. For this 2002-3 season the interestrates were a measly 2% and we had to ask MTACSD teachers to contribute to the CM awards. This you didmagnanimously and saved the day!!! Interest rates are still very low and in 2004 and we will need MTACSDteachers to contribute again to the CM graduate awards. Unless we get a vocal prize donor we may have tosuspend that category in 2004.

By the time this newsletter is received, the Goodlin Winners Recital at the downtown San Diego public libraryon August 24th, will be over. It will be televised again this year and the broadcast times will be announced onthe website. The 2003 winners are also currently posted on the MTACSD website.
