Edinburgh music showcase Identity Parade bounces back in style for tenth anniversary

Edinburgh : 9 November : www.facebook.com/identityparade

Identity Parade has enjoyed staggered events across the last ten years, with the simple goal of bringing together and showcasing talent in Edinburgh and beyond.

In 2004 the first event filled Edinburgh's cosy venue, The Tron, and delivered a energetic night of music and fun which soon turned IDP into a continuing event for the future. With gigs at Heriot-Watt University Students' Union - in a multiple stage, Jools Holland style, also the city's excellent The Liquid Room venue and three festival events in Edinburgh's west end, Identity Parade managed to showcase a multitude of artists to the city and to each other.

The first event featured a guest spot from Snow Patrol guitarist NATHAN CONNOLLY and the tenth anniversary show welcomes him back as he and ALAN R DAVISON, one of the event creators, perform a set including tracks of Davison's plus Connolly's own project, 'Little Matador', and a couple of surprises thrown in. Current billed acts for the anniversary show are young, Ayrshire rock act, ORTHODOX and Edinburgh's own THE LONELY TOGETHER in the headline slot. The very talented ZOE BESTEL has recently joined the bill with one more act yet to be announced.

Hosted by XFM Scotland's JIM GELLATLY, Identity Parade's 10th Anniversary gig promises a full musical extravaganza split between two rooms in Edinburgh's Mash House venue in the Old Town. Added to that, creators Keith Easton from Woosh Entertainments and musician Alan R Davison have made the show an over 14s to encourage younger musicians to come along, be inspired and make some contacts.

In a family friendly, late afternoon slot of 4pm on Sunday 9 November, Identity Parade promises to be an event to remember in the city.

GIGnotes: Sunday 9 November, 4pm - 9pm, The Mash House, Hasties Close, 37 Guthrie Street, Edinburgh. EH1 1JG Tickets on the door and also through Brown Paper Tickets @ www.brownpapertickets.com/event/880901 £6 - for aged 18 and over and £4 - for ages 14 - 17 (ID required)

Liet International is an annual event where singers and bands from across Europe compete to win best song in a European minority language. This multi-linguistic competition has singers attending from all over Europe including countries such as Norway, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and draws substantial media attention. The chosen act will play at the grand final in Teatre Kulturetage, Odenburg, Germany on 14 December 2014, and the winner will be announced that evening.

On Friday 12 December 2014 the 10th edition of Liet International will take place in the North-German city Oldenburg. After the participation of Föfftig Penns in Liet International 2009, the festival Plattsounds started in Oldenburg, the song contest for songs in Low German. The organisers of this festival and theatre Kulturetage are very pleased with Liet International 2014 taking place in Oldenburg.

The song festival for regional and minority languages Liet International is a Frisian (North of the Netherlands) initiative and is organised for the first time in the capital of Friesland, Ljouwert/Leeuwarden in 2002. Since 2006, the festival travels around Europe and since 2008, under the patronage of the Council of Europe. Liet International attracts each year a lot of media-attention – from BBC to Al Jazeera – and grew to one of the biggest events for the promotion of minority languages. In 2012, the latest edition of Liet International took place in the Asturian city Xixón/Gijón, in the north of Spain. Any style of music is allowed so long as the song is newly composed and has not been widely published or promoted to date. Artists can submit 1 song between 3 – 24 October 2014. A panel of experts from Creative Scotland, BBC ALBA/Scotland and the music industry will select one song to represent either Gaelic or Scots language at the event. They will receive up to £2,000 to cover their costs (flights, accommodation, subsistence) for attending the event. To enter please visit www.lietsong.scot where you will be required to fill out an application form and supply an mp3 of your song with lyrics and translation. This competition is supported by Creative Scotland working in partnership with BBC Alba/Scotland, Hands Up for Trad and Liet International. Brian Ó hEadhra, Gaelic Arts & Culture Officer with Creative Scotland and Bòrd na Gàidhlig said: “This is a great opportunity for a Gaelic or Scots language act to reach a wide, international audience. Scottish acts have participated in Leit International in the past and have benefited from the experience of meeting other bands who face many of the same challenges and opportunities that come with singing in an indigenous language. What makes this competition exciting is that all musical genres partake in this event from folk to metal, pop to classical. Win or loose, all acts enjoy the opportunity to perform on an international stage which, on the night, is broadcast and webcast live across the globe.

The Fallen Angels Club rounds off October with two top gigs

Glasgow : 28 + 31 October : www.fallenangelsclub.com

The Fallen Angels Club was launched in February 2003 by promoter Kevin Morris and has played host to an array of Americana acts. As well as headlining International acts up and coming local talent have been provided with their first live experience and the opportunity to perform with more established artists from other parts of the world. The 'Herald's' Rob Adams said: "The Fallen Angels club has become a vital component in Glasgow’s live Americana music scene, presenting established masters of the storytelling song form and many of the flood of new artists who promise a great future for music rooted in the American soil. Here’s to a great future for the Fallen Angels, too.” The club still has a host of impressive gigs lined up in 2014 and to complete October they have DAVE ALVIN & PHIL ALVIN on 28 October and ZOE MUTH & THE LOST HIGH ROLLERS on 31 October. GIGnotes ..... Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin with The Guilty Ones, Tuesday 28 October at The Art School Glasgow, tickets £17 from 0141 204 5151 The re-united Alvin Brothers – Dave and Phil - head to Glasgow for a gig in the newly-refurbished Art School. It took a near-death experience to reunite Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin, the California brothers at the heart of “roots heroes” (Rolling Stone) The Blasters. “Phil died and was brought back to life over in Spain,” Dave says of his brother’s 2012 health scare. “That was a real wakeup call to me. We hadn’t made a full album together since 1985, but as you get older, you realize you’re not immortal and you’ve only got so much time.” It’s a real coup for promoters, The Fallen Angels Club especially with the brothers’ current album – “Common Ground: Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin Play and Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy” – going down a storm. This is the Californians’ first collaborative effort in 30 years and their first as brothers as opposed to being members of The Blasters, which Dave quit in 1985 to pursue an illustrious solo career. The brothers are widely recognised as real mainstays of the roots/rock genre, separately or together – so this gig promises to be something rather special. The newly refurbished Art School is the perfect venue for this show. www.facebook.com/davealvinofficial Zoe Muth & The Lost High Rollers plus support, Friday 31 October, The CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow, tickets £12 from The CCA Box Office 0141 352 4900 The highly-praised Zoe Muth and The Lost High Rollers head to Glasgow’s CCA. With three acclaimed studio albums to her name, Zoe is just as capable of nailing an upbeat honky-tonk tune or a slow, sad story-song with honesty and feeling. Modern Acoustic magazine’s “New Artist of the Year” in 2010, Zoe digs into the spirit of country music where Merle lives but adds a welcome Americana atmosphere buoyed by her red-hot band. She’s supported top names such as James McMurtry, Kinky Friedman, Fred Eaglesmith, The Gourds, Eilen Jewell and Dave Alvin so no shortage of big name supporters there. Her 2102 release, “Old Gold” was much admired with Bob Harris (BBC Radio 2) saying: “I just can’t stop playing this". www.facebook.com/pages/Zoe-Muth-And-The-Lost-High-Rollers/122565481152887 www.fallenangelsclub.com https://twitter.com/KevoMorris www.facebook.com/pages/The-Fallen-Angels-Club/149553931728736

Scotland is set for a virtual invasion of top class Americana acts, most of whom are making by-popular-demand returns following previous successful visits to these shores. The Brookfield-Knights agency have five of their best acts arriving over the coming months, starting off with ZOE MUTH & THE LOST HIGH ROLLERS, from Austin, Texas. Widely recognised as one of the brightest talents on the US circuit, her debut album stormed the roots music charts on the other side of the Atlantic and simultaneously hit the Number 1 slot on the Euro Americana Chart. Then, the stunning follow-up for the Signature Sounds label, rocketed straight to the Number 1 position all over again. Over here it picked up a huge amount of radio attention and great reviews. Bob Harris told listeners to his BBC Radio 2 show that she was in a class of her own and invited the band in to his London studios to record a session for his programme. BBC 2 TV cameras filmed their sold-out show at the 1000-capacity Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow during their appearance at the city’s big Celtic Connections festival and included them in the annual Highlights show that was televised. While Zoe and her band are in Scotland (October 28 to November 2), another well-loved performer, GREG TROOPER, also has dates north of the Border in that same period. This will be his fifth visit to keep Scottish fans happy. A creative force who has had his material covered by everyone from Steve Earle to Billy Brag and Country star Vince Gill, Greg has been making great records since 1986. His latest, Incident On Willow Street, has been widely voted one of his best. Steve Earle has for many years been happy to nail his colours to the mast and declare himself a fan, stating in a recent interview: “Greg writes great songs, including one of my very favourite compositions in the world. On top of all that, there’s his voice – an instrument I have coveted for fifteen years.” Billy Bragg says that he considers the man to have a rightful place on “the list of our finest contemporary songwriters.”

Over here, Bob Harris has featured many tracks on his BBC Radio 2 shows and described Greg as “One of the great, great American singer-songwriters,” while Maverick magazine stated simply: “This is a must-see gig.” When CAM PENNER & JON WOOD were last in Scotland, they received glowing reviews from their sold-out Glasgow show. Writing about the event for AmericanaUK, Mike Ritchie said: “This superb gig never dipped below magical.” ‘Live’ they have been described as mesmerising, creating a big, bold sound that is also bright and extraordinarily subtle in places as percussive elements combine with layered guitar techniques to bolster the rich texture. Cam hails from a Mennonite community in Southern Manitoba, where his parents, town rebels, ran an illegal roadhouse and his grandfather, a bootlegger, was a much-loved character in the rural community. His last album, Gypsy Summer debuted at Number 16 on the Folk Billboard Charts and established him as a major song-writing force. The new one, To Build A Fire attracted widespread praise from critics and was hailed as “a masterpiece” when they showcased the material at the big Folk Alliance International event in Toronto. This will be their most extensive UK & Ireland tour to date with a total of ten shows (November 6 to 16) in Scotland. Now back to their acoustic roots and format, THE WIYOS are no strangers to Scottish audiences, having played Celtic Connections and Shetland Folk Festival - and appeared in an STV documentary film. The band famously appeared at The Barbican Theatre in London with Seasick Steve for an American roots music show that the BBC televised from the venue – and Bob Dylan

invited them to open the show when he went out on a tour of US baseball stadiums. Reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic have written great things about them. The Los Angeles Times said they were: “A pure joy,” while Bob Harris told listeners to his BBC Radio 2 show: “This is great music”. Seasick Steve’s a fan and warns everyone who has not seen the band perform ‘live’: “You’re in for a surprise!” They return north of the Border for a string of dates between November 11 and 16. Top Canadian band PETUNIA & THE VIPERS made a huge impact when they last toured here and now, their legendary frontman returns in duo format in the company of one of the finest exponents of traditional American old-time - Nathan Godfrey. Described by reviewers as “the real deal,” the pair mine for nuggets from the US roots music back catalogue and present them as well-burnished golden treasures. Expect to hear echoes of Hank Williams, Lefty Frizell, Jimme Rodgers and Riley Puckett as well as originals which will be familiar to fans of The Vipers’ shows. Whenever Petunia takes the stage for a solo spotlight, it is always powerfully impressive. Godfrey, his multi-talented side-kick, who joins him on vocals and resonator guitar, mandolin or banjo, is recognised as one of Canada’s leading old-time performers and also hosts his own radio show. They have toured extensively on the US/Canadian circuit in this superb duo format to become recognised as one of the truly great ‘live’ experiences, described as a “pure Canadian treasure.” They will be in Scotland from December 5 to 11. www.brookfield-knights.com www.facebook.com/BrookfieldKnights

Berwick Upon Tweed may just sneak over into England (though only for the last 500 years!) but for a large part of the Scottish Borders it is their main 'big town', so the exciting development of Cafe Kazmiranda into a very well ran intimate music venue is extremely good news for Borders' music fans. The last couple of weeks has seen Brian Martin and his hard working team bring Michelle Shocked and Rod Clements of Lindisfarne to Kazmiranda, and before their vibes have faded away you get a chance to celebrate Halloween in the company of Sid Griffin and 'The Coal Porters' - as part of their current UK tour. Five piece ‘alt-bluegrass’ band 'The Coal Porters' were formed in the 1990s by ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin. Relocating from Los Angeles to London the band left its electric instrumentation behind and slowly mutated into the acoustic act they are today. In fact, the Coal Porters claim to be the world's first "alt-bluegrass" act, given as they take old themes and melodies and soup them up for the 21st century and their expanded listening audience.

The band has demonstrated the power of fiddle, mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar and doghouse bass when matched with three-part harmonies and memorable melodies - and taken this sound around the world. The Coal Porters have recorded four albums. Their most recent album, Find The One, was produced by industry veteran John Wood, producer of Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Squeeze and Beth Orton. Find The One was recorded in London this year and features guest performances from guitar virtuoso Richard Thompson and legendary BBC DJ and Beatles’ intimate Brian Matthew! To find out more or to book tickets email Brian at [email protected] or call 01289 308030. Cafe Kazmiranda is to be found tucked up a vennel at 83c Marygate, just up the hill on the left-hand side from the 16th century Town Hall.

You don’t need a degree in Social Anthropology from Cambridge University to play jazz but it certainly helped pianist and composer Philip Clouts. South Africa-born Clouts, who brings his new quartet on a six-date Scottish tour beginning on November 1, was just finishing his studies at Cambridge when he had an epiphany. Realising that he wanted to contribute to his own culture instead of studying other ones, he decided to concentrate on music and specifically the South African jazz style that had followed him to

London, where he grew up. “At that time in the 1980s there were many exiled South African musicians in London,” he says. “Some, like Dudu Pukwana, the great saxophonist, had come over in the 1960s, as my own family had done, with the Blue Notes who became celebrated very quickly for their vibrant music. But there were others from a younger generation, including drummers Brian Abrahams and Thebe Lipere and for me most notably the pianist Bheki Mseleku who was a great source of inspiration and who mentored me for a short while.” The group Clouts formed on returning to London from Cambridge, Zubop, benefited as a whole from the exiled musicians’ input into their playing. As well as Mseleku showing Clouts the ropes, Thebe Lipere joined Zubop for their first few gigs, playing his distinctive African drum kit, and with this “rubber stamping” of their efforts, the band went on to be very popular on the live music circuit, subsequently expanding into ZubopGambia, which featured the BBC World Music Awards-winning riti, or one-string fiddle, player Juldeh Camara. In 2006, Clouts decided to leave London for Dorset and began a new phase of music-making inspired by the coast where he lives. He continues to draw inspiration from South African

music and from music from all around the world, including Cuba and South America, but something of his father, respected poet Sydney Clouts’ talent has emerged also in Clouts’ compositions that have been inspired by the Dorset landscape. “There are ways in which my composing has been shaped by both my father and my uncle Cyril Clouts, who was a musician and composer too,” says Clouts, whose new group features saxophonist Tom Ward, bassist Tim Fairhall and the Yamaha Jazz Scholarship-winning drummer Dave Ingamells. “Cyril created very expressive music in the 1960s and 1970s and my father was profoundly affected by the landscape around Cape Town, and I like to think that living near the sea has drawn me closer to his ability to express his response to nature, except I use notes where he used words.” GIGnotes: Sat 1 Nov: Auchenblae Village Hall Sun 2 Nov: Edinburgh, The Jazz Bar Mon 3 Nov: St Andrews, The Inn at Lathones Tue 4 Nov: Aberdeen, Lemon Tree Wed 5 Nov: Glasgow, Woodend Tennis & Bowling Club Thu 6 Nov: Dunfermline, Carnegie Hall

JAKE THACKRAY Jake Thackray and Songs DVD Release Date: Out Now The Jake Thackray Project is delighted to announce the release of the DVD “Jake Thackray and Songs”, by arrangement with BBC Music. This is the only DVD available of Jake performing. It also includes previously unreleased performances by three of the outstanding guest artists who appeared in the series: Ralph McTell, Alex Glasgow and Pete Scott. His influence on today’s music scene is evidenced by this quote from Alex Turner in a 2010 interview: Yeah, I mean let’s say with that same song [“Cornerstone”] there is this guy called Jake Thackray and he writes these sort of narrations that are kind of humorous. In some of his live recordings he will sort of pause so that people can laugh. The way you completely understand [each detail] of what he is writing. It’s sometimes hard to do without being banal, I suppose. EMILIO LARGO Derealise single download Release Date: Out Now After parting ways with former guitarist Joe Wyman, we took on board a new guitarist, Andrew Beveridge. The chemistry was instant and we began writing the follow up to our debut EP 'In Uniform We Divide'. Taking a more straight forward approach to song writing this time, we focused on melody and harmonies whilst still retaining elements of what sculpted the sound of 'IUWD'. Drawing on elements from bands like Oceansize, Arcane Roots and Fall of Troy, it is a further progression of our sound. Their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Niagarama, is a concept album of sorts, exploring the loss of youth and how we process it.
