hen I started listening to Itziar Run’s new album ‘Whatever’, I thought it would be the same old

nothingy stuff that always finds its way into my hands: new bands coming into the business, be-having like ageing primadonna rockgods. Not at all. Although the cover is as simple as it could pos-sibly be, do not dare to judge this particular book (or album) by its cover. I was totally amazed by the simply wonderful songs I found inside this veritable Pandora’s box. Every song is better than the one before. This is the kind of music that makes the perfect soundtrack for life; the first few notes of the intro track with its powerful -and strange- energy; the brightness of the lyrics and that happy sense of being alive that the melodies radiate. These songs will take you to an endless summer of sun, sea and frivolity.

Every song is well thought out. The use of ukuleles or violins across the album, makes the sound unique. You haven’t heard this kind of layered sound before, but other listeners may detect a happy harmonious mixture of the techno sounds of Two Door Cinema Club and the indie acous-tic melodies of Noah and The Whale.

This four-component band is sure to make you dance and laugh. You’ll be feeling the joyful all day long.

And do not underestimate the singer. She is the eldest of this band of sib-lings. The singer, nominated in the last EMAs in the category of ‘Best Female’, has a voice that gives a touch of rock to this indie record. You’ll be able to almost taste the strength and power of each and every note that comes out of her mouth. Today I went to meet her at the hotel reception where she had an MTV inter-view, and I realized, at first sight, that she is the most easy-going person I have ever seen. She looks like she doesn’t care about anything too much (in a good sense) and that, my dear read-ers, is what took her (and her brothers) to the top: ‘I’ve never cared that much about material stuff, you know. It is essential to know what is really important and what is meaningless’. While we were wait-ing to start the inter-

view proper, we talked a bit about the release of their new album and the start of the band’s career. ‘We started making music for fun, playing the guitar in a park near our house. Nothing really serious. None of us were looking for fame or money….’

Although the music sounds very new and fas-cinating, will it be accepted by their audi-ence? Maybe they’ll prefer to stay with a safer, more mundane choice and listen to the already suc-cessful The Vaccines. However, as Itziar said in the interview, ‘There is no fun in some-thing easy’.

‘Whatever’ available on iTunes Store the 1st of december.
