Kleb Band Philosophy

At Kleb Intermediate we are committed to providing every student with the best possible musical experience. The study and performance of music is an expressive opportunity our young people of today truly need! It is not our goal to make professional musicians of your students, but rather to enable them to reach their individual musical potential, while fully enjoying the life-long benefits and appreciation of music. Recent studies have proven that students participating in music are among the academically strongest in their schools. The skills that students learn in our school band program are: self-discipline, increased self-esteem, group cooperation, commitment, responsibility, creativity, and teamwork. These skills will help our students in all of their endeavors throughout the rest of their educational life and will be reflected in a successful adult life. Great achievements and great musical performances are the result of diligent preparation, hard work, and learning from difficulties. Our band program hopes to inspire every student to be the best they can be in our band program and in everything they do.

Kleb Band Objectives

To develop-• self-discipline and group-discipline through the preparation and practice of individual parts• leadership skills, responsibility, diligence and the ability to cooperate with others as a team member• strength, stamina, endurance and coordination • the ability to make value judgments about music through critical listening. The student will be provided with

opportunities to recognize quality of sound, pitch, style, tempo, rhythm, blend, balance, phrasing, dynamics and articulation.

• skills in using and understanding note values, rests, key signatures, scales, musical terms, signs and symbols. • the ability to recognize and tune intervals, unisons, harmonies (train the ear) • proper instrumental technique, care for instrument, correct posture and playing position, embouchure, good

tone, correct breathing, technical proficiency and rhythmic skill• music-reading skills and hand-eye coordination. • musical sensitivity through performance and listening. The student shall be provided opportunities to

internalize generally accepted, authentic performance styles and techniques in music played and heard. • creative self-expression in every performance experienceTo interpret ... • sound, musical symbols and terms from the printed page. To evaluate ... • the quality of musical performance. The student shall be provided opportunities to evaluate progress toward

self-established musical goals, evaluate solo and group rehearsals and performances, and recognize quality of sound, pitch, style, tempo, rhythm, blend, balance, phrasing, dynamics and articulation.

WHAT IS MUSIC?

MUSIC IS A SCIENCE.It is exact, specific, and it demands exact acoustics. A piece of music is a chart or a graphwhich indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody, and harmony all atonce and with the most exact control of time.

MUSIC IS MATHEMATICAL.It is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions which must be doneinstantaneously, not worked out on paper.

MUSIC IS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French; the notation is certainly notEnglish, but is a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.

MUSIC IS HISTORY.Music usually reflects the environment and the times of its creation, often even thecountry and/or cultural feeling.

MUSIC IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION.It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek, and facial movement,in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragmatic, back, stomach, and chestmuscles which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.

MUSIC DEVELOPS INSIGHT AND DEMANDS RESEARCH.MUSIC IS ART.It allows a human being to take all these dry, technically boring (but difficult) techniquesand use them to create emotion. That is the thing science cannot duplicate: humanism, feeling, and emotion.

WHY DO WE GIVE OUR CHILDREN MUSIC?

Not because we expect them to major in music, not because we expect them to play all their lives, not so they can relax, not so they can have fun,But so they will be human, so they will recognize beauty,

so they will be sensitive,so they will be closer to an infinite beyond this world,so they will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness,

more good - in short, more life.Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless you know how to live?

Kleb Band Classes

Beginning Band

The Beginning Band classes are designed for students with little or no previous playing experience. The most basic concepts of fundamentals, technique, and musicality are emphasized. Each individual instrument will be taught in its own separate class period during the school day to insure the most complete and individualized instruction possible. Students will have the opportunity to participate in Solo and Ensemble Contest. Students will perform in Winter and Spring Concerts with the possibility of a Band Festival in Spring.

Concert Band B

The Concert Band B is instructed by Mr. Hentrich and is designed for students with one or more years of playing experience. Continued development of fundamentals, technique, and musicality are emphasized and reinforced. In addition to Fall, Winter and Spring concerts, the band will also perform at Pep Rallies and one 8th grade football game.

Concert Band A

The Concert Band A is instructed by Mrs. King and is designed for students with one or more years of playing experience. Continued development of fundamentals, technique, and musicality are emphasized. In addition, ensemble skills will be emphasized through the rehearsal and performance of full band arrangements in a variety of styles. Students in the Concert Band will be required to attend weekly section rehearsals before or after school for part of the year (generally late September through April- students will receive a detailed schedule well in advance of the first sectional). Students will have the option of participating in auditions for the KISD District Band try-out, TMEA-Region Band as well as the K.I.S.D. Solo & Ensemble contest. The Concert Band participates in the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contest in March. In addition to Fall, Winter and Spring concerts, the band will also perform at Pep Rallies and one 8th grade football game with the possibility of participating in a Spring Band Festival.

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is instructed by Mr. Hentrich and is designed for students with one or more years of playing experience who have achieved the highest level proficiency on his or her instrument. The privilege of being a member of the Symphonic Band carries the highest level responsibility and expectations. The Symphonic band can be compared to top band programs across the state of Texas. Because it is extremely difficult to receive individual instruction in a full band setting, students will be required to attend a one 60-minute section rehearsal each week. Symphonic Band students are encouraged to participate in the private lesson program. Members of the Symphonic Band are required to audition for the KISD District Band, TMEA-Region Band and Orchestra in October as well as compete in the K.I.S.D. Solo & Ensemble contest in January. The Symphonic Band also participates in the U.I.L Concert and Sight Reading contest in April. Select members of the band will be asked to take recruiting trips to elementary schools in the spring semester. The Symphonic band may also participate in additional contests and festivals in the spring. In addition to Fall, Winter and Spring concerts, the band will also perform at Pep Rallies and one 8th grade football game.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is instructed by Mr. Hentrich and is designed for students with one or more years of playing

School-Owned Instruments

Kleb has a limited inventory of the larger and more expensive instruments for student use. Klein ISD has approved the implementation of an Instrument Usage Fee of $50 per year ($25 per semester, non-refundable) to offset the cost of normal maintenance and cleaning of these instruments. Any damage that is deemed not normal wear and tear will be the responsibility of the student to which the instrument was assigned. We will get an estimate for the cost of the repair, find the most cost-effective solution, and then send the instrument to get repaired. That bill of repair will then become the responsibility of the student and their parents/guardians. If damage or theft occurs to the instrument due to negligence or abuse, the student's parents/guardians will be responsible for repairing or replacing the instrument. Students using school owned instruments should report any damage to a director as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

School-owned instruments include: Oboe, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, French Horn, Euphonium, Tuba, and Percussion. Beginning percussion students are exempt from the Instrument Usage Fee, but must begin paying the Instrument Usage Fee once they are enrolled in Concert or Symphonic Band.

The only other requirement to play a school-owned instrument is to buy the proper mouthpiece, reeds, and supplies to maintain good playing condition.

Band Discipline Plan

The purpose of discipline is to create an environment that enhances learning and performance. This plan is based upon the premise that every student has a right to participate in the learning process without interference. Responsibility for behavior lies directly with the individual student. Therefore, anyone who interferes with the effectiveness of the classroom, performance, travel situations or learning environment in general, choose to accept the consequences as outlined below:

Standards1. Every student is expected to be in class on time, or present for travel or performance on time, with the correct

equipment and a positive attitude. 2. Negative verbal or nonverbal actions are inappropriate behaviors. Students are expected to maintain a mature

level of behavior. 3. Students are expected to respond with a positive attitude toward instruction. 4. Students are expected to refrain from the use of profanity and/or obscenity. 5. Chewing gum, eating candy, and using tobacco products are prohibited. 6. Use of illegal drugs and/or alcohol is prohibited. Refer to Kleb Student Handbook. 7. Students are expected to take proper care of personal and school-owned equipment, uniform and our facilities. 8. “Rough-housing” in any form is prohibited. Consequences1. Warning to student. 2. Warning to student and parent contact.3. Conference with parents to discuss expectations and future role in the band program. 4. Referred to principal for school discipline.

Any student who severely disrupts the class will be sent directly to the principal for disciplinary purposes. The above applies to anytime we are together for travel, rehearsals, performances, etc.

Academic Eligibility

For a student to be eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity or event, he/she must not have a 6 weeks report card grade in ANY CLASS lower than 70 for the six-weeks’ period immediately preceding the activity or event. A student whose six-weeks report card grade average in any course is lower than 70 shall be suspended from participation in any UIL and extracurricular activities. The suspension continues for at least three weeks (until progress reports). The student must be passing ALL CLASSES with a grade of 70 or better on the progress report to regain eligibility. While a student is suspended (3 weeks or 6 weeks), that student may practice or rehearse with other students for an extracurricular activity but may not participate in a competition or performance for which admission is charged. Certain classes do not affect academic eligibility (Pre-AP classes, etc.) We will speak to students individually concerning academic eligibility issues.

12

Page 13: MUSIC IS A SCIENCE - Klein Independent School Districtclassroom.kleinisd.net/users/3482/Kleb Band Handbook …  · Web viewso they will be closer to an infinite beyond this world,

Attendance

Any activity which is included in the course objectives is considered curricular. Sectionals and performances are part of the course requirements and are, therefore, graded activities. A year-long calendar of major events is provided to every student at the beginning of the school year (see page 15). Monthly updated calendars are made available to students and are posted on the websites. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. All absences must be approved in advance by a band director. Advance notice includes at least three (3) school days for rehearsals and two (2) weeks for performances. If you absolutely must miss an activity due to an unavoidable conflict or family emergency, a written request by parent or guardian will be needed. Please submit the request in a timely manner. Requests will be reviewed and excused at the band director’s discretion. The overall success of our program is directly proportional to the overall attendance rate throughout the year. We cannot teach an empty chair. Please make every effort to schedule your medical, dental or other appointments around band activities and class time.

Private Lessons

The value of private, or “one-on-one” instruction, has long been recognized as an important asset in the musical development of young students. It is the one time when a student receives the full attention of a professional musician/teacher. It enables the student to work on a special problem unique to the student and his/her instrument. Band members who are involved in the private lesson program maintain a greater interest level, practice longer, and generally progress faster and reach a higher level of proficiency than other students. Lessons are very beneficial for preparing for Region Band Tryouts and Solo Ensemble Contest. The specific day and times are arranged individually with the private instructor in order to avoid conflicts. The Klein Independent School District is pleased to be able to provide qualified private teachers. Their instruction is coordinated to enhance and compliment classroom instruction. Although students are under no obligation to take private lessons, we hope every student will take advantage of this opportunity. If you have any questions, or would like the name and phone number of a private teacher, please contact Mrs. King during school hours by e-mail ([email protected]) or by phone.

Sectionals

Symphonic and Concert Band sectionals are an important and mandatory part of the band curriculum. During sectionals, the director works specifically with one section or individual to help prepare for concerts and contests. Sectionals are held before or after school. The director will work diligently with students to schedule around other school activities.

13

Page 14: MUSIC IS A SCIENCE - Klein Independent School Districtclassroom.kleinisd.net/users/3482/Kleb Band Handbook …  · Web viewso they will be closer to an infinite beyond this world,

Region Band/Orchestra AuditionsAll Symphonic Band members are required to audition for Klein ISD District and TMEA- Region

Band/Orchestra. Concert Band members may audition, if they wish, with the approval of a director.

Concerts/Contests

A Concert is a non-competitive performance given as part of the band curriculum. There is no admission charge, and student’s family members and friends are encouraged to attend. The Symphonic, Concert, and Beginning Bands give two concerts per year- a Holiday Concert in December and a Spring Concert in May. Concerts are a state-mandated part of the curriculum, and attendance is required of all students in the participating groups.

A Contest is a competitive performance. UIL Concert and Sight-reading, Solo and Ensemble, Region Band, and Region Orchestra are some of the contests in which the Kleb Bands will compete.

UIL/Pre-UILUIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest is held in the Spring (usually March or April). It consists of 3 prepared pieces of music and sight-reading. The contest can be held during school hours or after school. Parents are welcome to attend. Pre-UIL critique/performance is required for all Symphonic and Concert band members because it falls in the category of an evaluation/curricular activity. It is usually held 2-3 weeks before the UIL contest. (This year, Pre-UIL will be held in March.) Symphonic Band and Concert Band A members will also be required to attend one evening rehearsal held the week prior to UIL contest.

Kleb Beginner Band Solo ContestBeginner Band students will perform a solo for a judge. This contest will be hosted at Kleb in early May and will occur during the school day. Students have the opportunity to get feedback from the judge concerning their performance, and could win a medal for excellent performances!

Klein 7th & 8th Grade Solo and Ensemble ContestEach 7th & 8th grade student is encouraged to participate in Solo and Ensemble Contest. Symphonic Band Students are required to perform a Solo from the UIL list. Concert Band students are encouraged to participate. The contest is usually held at the end of January. Private lessons teachers may pick the solos for their students, but all solos need a Band Director’s approval. Students are also required to have a piano accompanist for solos. The cost for the accompanist is $30.00 and this pays for 2 rehearsals and the contest performance. Your band director will arrange for the accompanist and schedule rehearsals, usually during band class.

14

Page 15: MUSIC IS A SCIENCE - Klein Independent School Districtclassroom.kleinisd.net/users/3482/Kleb Band Handbook …  · Web viewso they will be closer to an infinite beyond this world,

Participating students are also required to attend our Solo and Ensemble night.
