Music Internship at the New York Summer Music Festival David Newton, Centre College Abstract For my summer enrichment project I spent six weeks at the New York Summer Music Festival in Oneonta, New York. The program was large and all encompassing: there were about 200 students aged 12 to 25, and both classical and jazz styles were taught. My day to day activities consisted of private lessons, master classes, jazz combos, and traditional classroom lectures. My experience allowed me to grow considerably as a musician. As a result, I now have a much better perspective on the level of knowledge, practice, and ability it takes to be successful in the world of a jazz musician. Through this new perspective, my enrichment project has given me the invaluable realization that my passions lay elsewhere. Deciding whether to pursue music professionally or not has been a constant struggle for me over the past few years, and I am incredibly grateful that this experience has been a catalyst in helping me make that decision.
