Just as the long Paris twilight merged into night at 10 oclock, Milhauds music suddenly pervaded the atmosphere in a flow of pastoral calm. A cloud of silvery smoke rose from the river like luminous wraiths, while silver balloons floated aloft in the path of giant projectors and music bathed the scene in peaceful reverie. The great fountains, at the appearance of a barcarolle motif, were illumined with slowly changing color. A particularly effective moment came when a bluish-purple light was thrown on the fountains during a minor theme, while one tall shaft of water, luminous with golden light, brought a note of effective contrast. White fireworks sprang upward and white fire went floating down the river on little rafts. Gradually in a simultaneous diminuendo, music and lights died away.

We must stop viewing art as something that is reserved for upper classes, specialists, and snobs who do it dishonor. Art must be brought closer to the people . . . particularly these millions of workers who have or are about to have more free time and for which agreeable activities must be found that are at once profitable to each of them and to society as a whole . . . Why shouldnt a theatrical performance, an art exhibit, an orchestral concert, a visit to a monument [] be deemed genuine social services? Culture, in all its forms, can be popularized without having to lower its quality (despite the opinions of those who believe that art must remain along with all other riches the privilege of a minority)

Pourquoi la prsentation thtrale, lexposition de peinture, le concert symphonique, la visite dune monument . . . Ne seraient-ils pas de vritables services sociaux? La culture, sous toutes ses formes, peut tre popularise, sans quil y ait lieu dabaisser sa qualit, ainsi que le prtendent ceux qui estiment que lart doit rester le privilge dune minorit comme les autres richesses.

Threats and sinister omens filled the air. There was an Austrian pavilion, but the evil forces of the Anschluss lurked close by; Picasso's Guernica sprawled over the walls of the Spanish pavilion, but the Republic had been murdered; the German and Soviet pavilions, nose to nose, seemed to challenge each other. As the sun set one evening, contemplating the great mass of flags of all the nations that fluttered above the Pont d'Iena, Madeleine felt a such pang of anguish that she clutched my arm and whispered: 'This is the end of Europe!

Cependant on sentait sourdre des menaces et de sinistres prsages. Il y avait un Pavillon autrichien, mais les forces mauvaises de lAnschluss nen taient jamais loignes; la Guernica de Picasso s talait sur les murs du Pavillon espagnol, mais la Rpublique avait t assassine; le Pavillon de lAllemagne et celui de la Russie sovitique semblaient se dfier face face. Un soir, tandis que nous contemplions au soleil couchant la masse norme des drapeaux de toutes les nations qui dominaient le pont dIna, Madeleine ressentit une telle angoisse quelle me serra le bras en murmurant: Cest la fin de lEurope.
