You’ll fall in love with music atKaufman Music CenterLMS Student

We invite students of all ages and skill levels to study music, dance and theater in an atmosphere of encouragement and excellence. Whether you’re an absolute beginner, an accomplished performer, or an adult student seeking to re-connect with an old passion, Kaufman Music Center’s Lucy Moses School has what you are looking for. Our classes and programs are tailored to the goals and interests of the student. And we offer an abundance of performance opportunities throughout the school year as well. Our teachers are caring and nurturing educators devoted to sharing their love of music and the performing arts. Many students first come to Lucy Moses School as preschoolers and continue their studies with instrument lessons and other programs through their teens. If your child is already a student, consider exploring a second instrument, or supplementing instrumental lessons with other types of classes such as Dalcroze, dance or theater. We want to help you build a musical foundation that will last a lifetime!

EARLY CHILDHOOD & DALCROZEFriendly and full of discovery, these classes pave the way for a lifetime of music. By providing developmentally appropriate music experiences for young children and their families, we facilitate the musical growth of every child through listening, singing, movement games, improvising and playing simple percussion instruments. As children progress through the curriculum, they develop important musical skills, such as careful listening and body-ear coordination, that lead to reading music and understanding meter, tempo, phrasing, form and dynamics.

DALCROZE classes offer a hands-on approach to music theory that is a hallmark of Lucy Moses School. Émile Jaques-Dalcroze was a Swiss musician who believed that rhythm is the primary element of music.Note: Students enrolled in Dalcroze classes receive a 10% tuition discount on dance classes.

GROUP INSTRUMENTALSmall group classes can be an ideal way to try out an instrument. With plenty of individual attention, young children become familiar with their instrument and begin playing simple pieces as preparation for private lessons. Group instruction is offered in guitar, piano, recorder and voice.

INSTRUMENT DISCOVERY explores violin, cello, piano, recorder and small percussion instruments and introduces basic elements of music such as ear training, solfège, simple notation and rhythm. This class is a great way to help identify what instrument your child would like to study in private lessons.

ENSEMBLESEnsemble work is an important element in the development of music listening skills, group music making and team building. Lucy Moses School provides a variety of music ensemble experiences appropriate for nearly all levels of instrumental students.M

21In CHAMBER MUSIC, piano, string and wind players are grouped into duos, trios, quartets and quintets, and are coached weekly by master teachers in a wide range of repertoire.

FACE THE MUSIC is Kaufman Music Center’s contemporary music education program for teenagers, and the country’s only youth orchestra dedicated to post-genre music by living composers. Each year, FTM presents more than 10 concerts at some of New York’s best concert venues, experimental performance spaces, and educational institutions.

MUSIC THEORYA sequential curriculum provides a creative approach to the fundamentals of music including skill-building with rhythm, scales, intervals, harmony and part writing, sight-singing and music dictation. Regular home preparation is required and periodic exams are given.

In COMPOSERCRAFT, students complete original compositions and present them in readings and performances by faculty and professional ensembles.

PRIVATE LESSONSLucy Moses School works with families to make an ideal match with a PRIVATE LESSON teacher based on the student’s needs, goals, past experiences and available schedule. Instruction is offered in cello, clarinet, double bass, flute, French horn, guitar, oboe, bassoon, percussion, piano, recorder, saxophone, trumpet, violin, viola, and voice. Weekly lessons are scheduled for 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

The SUZUKI method, pioneered by Shinichi Suzuki, offers an exciting

opportunity for student, teacher and parent to collaborate. Students and parents attend both individual and group. We also offer a uniquely effective and innovative curriculum known as Dalzuki®, which combines Suzuki instruction with a Dalcroze music theory class.

For advanced and motivated students we offer the YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM (YAP). The four levels of this program include a variety of options to fit the needs of gifted and talented students. All YAP students are required to participate in an annual jury; requirements vary by age and program level. By interview and audition only.

Playing the flute has taught me that when I close my eyes and begin to play, I can be magical.LMS Student

CREATIVE & MODERNChildren work together to develop dance technique and explore choreographic ideas. Age-appropriate vocabulary from ballet and modern styles is used alongside children’s own natural physicality to promote a love of movement and creative expression. Classes include traditional barre and floor work, and introduce exploration of the effect of intent, dynamics and rhythm on movement.

BALLETOur ballet classes develop physical and social skills while enriching the imagination. Class size is designed to provide specific one-on-one attention to students and curriculum includes warm-up exercises, formal ballet barrework and center work with dance combinations. Advanced classes may include pointe work and introduce more advanced ballet vocabulary emphasizing the building of proper classical technique. Repertoire classes focus on Cecchetti-based barre or the Vaganova (Russian) method. Dancers

In THEATER ADVENTURES and DRAMA CLUB, imagination takes flight using improvisation games, stories, movement and song. Students bring fairy tales to life and rehearse original scenes while developing skills in active listening, speaking in public, cooperation and creative self-expression.

MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP emphasizes concentration, teamwork, and creativity while exploring acting, singing and movement. Performance opportunities include presentations in Merkin Hall.

SUMMER MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP participants create original musical plays under the direction of a caring and talented faculty of performing artists/educators. This 5-week workshop includes classes in acting, singing, dance and stagecraft, culminating in a full-scale production.

also work on choreography performed throughout the year.

JAZZ & BROADWAYCoordination, strength and flexibility are developed with dance technique exercises, while students enjoy movement with music from Broadway and children’s theater. Students will learn to express themselves through creative movement with a variety of music, characters and dance combinations. Creating choreographed dances provides a fun learning experience and sense of accomplishment.

Dance classes offer children the opportunity to experience the joy of movement in a group setting. Lucy Moses dance classes for beginning students start with a strong introduction to classical ballet, modern, and jazz techniques while focusing on building flexibility, improvisational skills and a basic dance vocabulary. Advanced classes are offered for more experienced students. Classes for ages 4 and 5 and older participate in year-end performances in Merkin Hall.

LMS’s Theater Program is an active and joyful exploration of the dramatic arts. Children develop concentration, stage presence, confidence and the ability to work as a team.

DISCOUNTS Children enrolled in dance classes receive a tuition discount for multiple dance classes: 15% per class if two per week are taken, 20% per class if more than two per week are taken.

Students enrolled in Dalcroze classes receive a 10% tuition discount on dance classes.
