Learning outcomes This master’s degree focuses on music business and is run by experts with many years of industry experience. This unique degree gives you the opportunity to specialise for industry employment or prepares you for further study. Your studies will be conducted in our innovative student run record label, Boxer Music and our music industry business office (MiBO), where you will learn in real life industry scenarios alongside industry specialists.

Learning outcomes You will gain business skills and knowledge that can be applied in other industries, have access to leading industry music business software, and opportunities to manage student music projects (under staff supervision). Classes include music marketing, artist management, touring, music events, record company operations, music publishing, social media, web design, audio recording, video creation and editing. In the third year of the degree students are required to complete an industry internship and practical placement. The degree has a specific music industry focus and aims to engage students in an environment which supports learning whilst creating an atmosphere conducive to industry-related work practices.

The Bachelor of Applied Music - Performance focuses on contemporary and popular styles. It is very much a `hands on’ course whereby students will gain industry relevant experience.

Learning outcomes This course explores contemporary music genres such as rock, pop, jazz, soul and world music. Students will receive industry relevant experience through live performances, studio recordings and professional video recordings in a TV studio environment. Students will also receive one-on-one tuition on their principal instrument. Core subjects include studies in solo and ensemble performances, improvisation, music technology, music business, music theory, music histories, keyboard studies, aural training, and aesthetics. Students may choose electives in composition, performance, audio production, or in learning how to teach instrumental lessons.

Students attend regular seminars, and have enjoyed performances from such artists as Helen Croome (aka Gossling), Lucas Taranto (bass player for Gotye), renown bass clinician Andy Irvine, jazz guitarist Mike Stern, and jazz drummer John Riley, who was artist in residence.

The Bachelor of Sound Production provides students with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in a broad range of sound and music industry professions, in studio, interactive and live settings. Students undertaking this course will have the opportunity to work with leading industry professionals, work on a released music product and earn real sound production credits on films as part of their studies. While learning advanced sound production techniques, students will collaborate with filmmakers, musicians and game designers to produce high quality recordings and sound tracks. Areas of study include studio recording, producing and mixing, live sound, music production, business studies, sound design for games, films and media, film and game mixing and work placement. Students also have access to some elective offering from our Applied Music Degree.

Learning outcomes This course assumes that you have the basics of sound production and provides you with project based opportunities to develop and master skills in studio, live and audio visual contexts. This course will provide you with recording and editing skills on media including hard disk, CD and DVD, Pro Tools, advanced Microphone techniques, session management and the knowledge of sound for live performances. You will be involved in the recording and production of an album for one of the student bands, as well as being an engineer at live gigs and working on a film project.

Training in planning for rehearsals, events and shows provides you with the leadership and business skills required of a manager in live production. The program also includes a 4 week work placement opportunity in a professional venue or company.

The culmination of the course will involve developing an original show, rehearsing and event management - all leading to a public performance of the show in the final weeks of the course. The Certificate III in Community Dance, Theatre and Events is designed to develop basic skills in community dance, theatre and events as a pathway into higher level study to develop small music theatre shows or cabaret.

Learning outcomes This course will begin developing all three components - acting, voice and dance and students will require further study to be industry ready. You will study dance, acting, singing, staging, Occupational Health and Safety, industry and auditions as well as rehearse for the showcase event in the final week. The course is delivered at our City Campus in Flinders Lane using a specialist dance studio and other facilities.
