NASHVILLE

By Ford Fuller

After only four months together and with a video sub-mission contest win in hand, Baltimore-based Pratt Street Power (MAD) bested 29 competitors Tuesday night to claim the gold in this year’s Youth Quartet (formerly Collegiate) Contest.

As he embraced the first-place trophy for posting an A-Level score of 1476 (82.0%) with ringing renditions of Cry Me a River and Rock It For Me, all baritone Ben Hawker could say was “This is not real, this is not happening!” To be sure, the competition was stiff, with a mere 2.2 per-centage points separating 5th place bronze from gold. Other top five finishers were: 2nd (Silver)--Flightline (FWD), 1469/81.6%; 3rd (Bronze)--The Mission (BHNZ), 1464/81.3%; 4th (Bronze)—Ohana Means Family (DIX), 1452/80.7%; and 5th (Bronze)—Frontier (PIO), 1436/79.8%.

Pratt Street Power is coached by Dr. Jay Butterfield (Musical Director) and Sean Devine (Artistic Director) of Parkside Harmony (Hershey, PA), one of the Society’s newest members. “We are so grateful for the opportuni-ty to compete here in Nashville,” said an emotional Ben, “and thank our coaches, family members and Parkside Harmony for their encouragement and support!”

Today’s original tag comes to us courtesy of Trent Bynum from the Nashville Chapter. This was his first ever attempt at a tag

and he recently taught it to the Music City Chorus during its weekly quartet and tag time. Thank you, Trent, for your contribu-

tion.

Volunteers of all ages, like first year BHS member

ALlanson Reynolds and 68-year member Gerald

Adams, will be working hard to make sure this con-

vention is a success. Many are from the host Nash-

ville Chapter, but others come from around the

world. Of course, many are not even BHS members.

They just said “yes” when asked to help. Please re-

member to offer your thanks when you encounter a

volunteer. (Photo by Sam English)

Remember to Thank the Volunteers

Thoroughbreds Back After More Than a Decade By Jerry Daiker

After an eleven year absence, the 7-time gold winning chorus from Louisville, Kentucky is back competing, again.

The Thoroughbreds won the Cardinal District contest last fall. Director Drew Wheaton, the tenor of Forefront quartet, has guided the Thor-oughbreds back to GLORY. About 65 strong, The Thoroughbreds will be the thirteenth chorus on stage for the contest. They will be per-forming “If Ever I Would Leave You,” and “B&O Line.”

With a long history of excellence, The Thoroughbreds were led from 1963 through 1985 by the incredible director emeritus Jim Miller. Drew is the grandson-in-law of Jim Miller, so the leadership is back to the Miller clan! Three-time quartet gold medal bass, Jay Hawkins, Drew’s father-in-law, is the assistant director of The Thoroughbreds.

Open Rehearsals—Thursday (subject to change)
