A day in the self-isolated life of Warner/WAR’s Chris Janson: The quarantine has changed daily life in every way. We have been home more in the last few weeks than we ever have in our whole lives, but we find ways to stay busy. We needed some work on our home, and we’re taking this time to catch up on it. I love to work, so … I get up and work! I find something to do. Lately, I’ve repainted basically the whole exterior of the house. Decks, boardwalks, trim, etc. I’m with Kelly and the kids. I love my family with everything I have, and I love being around them. We don’t drive each other crazy. We’re just happy to be healthy and together. I wouldn’t say it has hindered the creative

process too much for me, luckily. I can turn the creative key on pretty easily if I need or want to; however, I’ve taken this time to work on other things, which I don’t often get to do. I reckon I’m bingeing cigars! It’s no secret … I love great cigars. I’ve burnt through quite a few. As far as quarantine snacks, I’ve gone on a “blast to the past lately” and am liking Little Debbie Swiss Rolls. I figure there’s something silver lined in everything. Somehow, somewhere. I love spending time with Kelly and the kids, whether that’s riding bikes, fishing or doing anything else together. I also love to paint. Plus, it’s turkey season! Woo!

Janson celebrates his 34th birthday with his family in quarantine.

The COVID-19 crisis and subsequent stay-at-home orders effectively ground the live music industry to a halt and, as the shutdown extends, so too does the need of many music industry professionals. That’s why Herbison says it was “imperative that the federal stimulus package contain language that made them eligible for relief.” He continues, “Among the first economic sectors to be seriously impacted by the coronavirus were travel, tourism and entertainment. That literally put hundreds of thousands of songwriters, musicians and others in danger of not being able to pay their rent.” Cong. Ted Deutch, (D-FL) — Chairman of the “Songwriter’s Caucus” in the U.S. House of Representatives — initially reached out to Herbison to discuss the idea of a grant program for songwriters and gig workers. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) then evolved the idea to include language for all self-employed persons making under $100,000 annually to be eligible for different loans and grants under the CARES Act. The process was collaborative and timely. “Getting legislative language adopted is

Wheelhouse’s Johnny McGuire puts an industry spin on the artist interview:I grew up in Dallas and Kansas City. I remember listening to Kidd Kraddick on Top 40 KHKS/Dallas when I was young, then KBEQ/Kansas City when I was older.I was on radio tour the first time I heard myself on the radio, rolling down the highway in Pensacola, FL. It came on and my bus driver screamed for me to run up

front. I sang along and FaceTimed my parents.I got to play an intimate show for listeners in St. Louis at the Budweiser Brewery. We played in the original Clydesdale barn and afterwards got to try out new beers from the brewery. My favorite road companion is my tour manager, Scott. He’s been my friend and roommate for most of my time in Nashville. We both know what the other is thinking, so it makes tackling life on the road easier. Not to mention, he’s a great hang.I’m always on the lookout for a Diet Mtn Dew Code Red, but they are a rare find out there. Unless you know where to find them.If I could have dinner with any person living or dead, it’d be Tom Petty. I’d let him choose the best spot in his hometown [Gainesville, FL], then maybe order fried gator (if they had it).My new single, “I Can’t Even,” is a classic heartbreak story with a more modern sound. The song reminds me of “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Petty. It was the last song I decided to cut on the project … and funny enough, it became the first single. My last impulse buy was a vintage Levi’s jacket at a thrift store in Fairbury, IL. I’m really into the Canadian tuxedo these days. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is probably magnet fishing. It’s where you tie a strong magnet to a fishing line and see what you can find at the bottom of a lake. I haven’t found much more than some fishing pliers, but I’ve heard stories of treasures! I wish I’d written Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue.” It’s a classic American love song with so many colorful descriptions. My least favorite interview question is, “Where’s your favorite place to play?” It’s tough to nail down one venue or city in particular, because I love so many. I mean, getting to do what I love and playing for people around the world that want to hear my music ... how can I pick just one? I’ve been binging How I Met Your Mother and Ghost Adventures. I’m hoping to be on a Ghost Adventures episode some day. Haha!

always difficult, but lawmakers saw a need and truly responded in a cooperative bi-partisan way to get this accomplished,” Herbison says. The CARES Act gives the industry a fighting chance, providing federal assistance through stimulus payments, unemployment benefits and grants and loans through the Small Business Administration (SBA). Last week, music industry organizations — including NSAI, ACM, CMA, NMPA, RIAA and SONA — launched MusicCovidRelief.com as a one-stop-shop (complete with flow charts) to access information and applications to receive benefits. Included is information about:

• How to receive unemployment as a result of losses from the COVID national emergency• How to receive small business loans, advances and loan forgiveness related to the COVID national emergency• Organizations providing relief; potential grants from the National Endowment for the Arts• Additional resources from other organizations. Chart Chat Congratulations to Brett Young, Matthew Hargis, Michelle Kammerer and the BMLG Records promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Catch.” The song is the second single from Young’s second studio album, Ticket To L.A., and is his sixth career No. 1. Songwriters are Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley and Young. And kudos to RJ Meacham and the Curb crew on notching 73 adds for Lee Brice’s “One Of Them Girls” topping this week’s board.

RC: The majority of the show was being built in LA ahead of being trucked to Las Vegas. About 60% of it was in the process of being built when we shut down. The basic set – the arch people have seen before – is stored in Las Vegas. Once we lock in a location for September, decide on the tone and what songs the artists are going to perform, we’ll figure out what can be salvaged. We’ll lose some of the money we’ve spent on that, but hopefully we can utilize some of it. Until then, we’re patiently waiting. DW: Similarly, we were already down the road with the radio remotes, the red carpet and our ACM Lifting Lives Party For A

Cause events – creating those backdrops, building them out and implementing our logistics plan. We plan to repurpose as much as possible either in September or at next year’s show. How did you get from postponing the awards to using the date on CBS for an at-home special? What kind of whirlwind pivot was that? DW: I love hearing RAC start chuckling as you ask that question. We had a lot of crazy scenarios we were looking at to try to still make the awards happen. When we ultimately determined we had to postpone, RAC had already been conceptualizing things that led to the light bulb moment. We didn’t want to let go of that April 5 date on CBS. RC: I looked at my emails and phone logs in anticipation of this question. The first day I didn’t go into the office was Friday, March 13 – that’s when everyone started panic buying and it felt like things were getting nuts. I’d had a conversation with [manager] Clarence Spalding earlier that week about his artists, and he’d suggested doing a clips special from prior shows. At the same time, I began seeing people streaming performances from their homes. That Friday, it really started percolating as an idea. The timeline worked, but I knew it was going to be crunched. This wasn’t going to be a live show on April 5, which meant we had to deliver to CBS four or five days ahead of time. I’d put together a tornado benefit with Blake Shelton and NBC in six days, so I knew I could pull this together in two weeks. Once [CBS EVP] Jack Sussman approved the idea, we started calling artists. What did you say? RC: We weren’t scripting anything. We wanted to make sure there was a heartfelt moment before each performance, but those were all their own words based on the guideposts we gave them. DW: One of the things I love about working in country music is the artists jumped aboard immediately if they were available. We were blown away at how quickly they grasped the concept and that it was a bigger purpose in creating community and connecting with each other and the fans. Dozens of artists reached out wanting to be part of it, and that’s how we came up with the digital pre-show, which allowed another 12 artists to participate and was a great lead-in to the broadcast. How do you get a show like that done, technically? RC: Once Damon, myself and Dick Clark Productions made the calls and explained the concept, co-producers Sacha Mueller and Patrick Menton curated it. They sent out tech specifications of what we needed. Amazingly, most phones today shoot in 4k or ultra-high definition. Except for Lady A, we asked them to please shoot horizontally, gave them a Dropbox to make sure we didn’t

lose any of the audio or video and the rest was up to them. Pick a song and shoot it. You saw the variance – and the viewers certainly noticed – in where they shot, how made up or not they were ... that was all up to the artists. Were you worried about what you’d get back? RC: I’d never heard Eric Church’s new song, and after talking with his manager John Peets, wasn’t expecting him to say much. But he was one of the most eloquent artists on the special. When that came in early on, I knew we had a show. DW: The artists really thought about the tone and being uplifting in choosing some prior hits. Luke Bryan did “Most People Are Good,” Tim McGraw sent in “Humble And Kind” – songs that fit the message. But we also had songs that were upbeat and fun. They scripted themselves, sent messages to health care providers, first responders and fans – that was the most moving part of it for me. And of course the Kenny Rogers tribute and clip of his performance with Lionel Richie. A lot of people have told me they were in tears watching that. RC: We wanted to be introspective but still needed to be entertaining. Darius Rucker and Brad Paisley doing “Mud On The Tires” and “Wagon Wheel” was just two guys hanging out playing music. Blake and Gwen Stefani played a really big hit right now. So we had good balance. How did you manage those duets? RC: We asked Kane Brown and John Legend how we could help, but they were shooting a video at the same time and figured out how to do it for that. Same with Brad and Darius. Brad did all that himself.

Final thoughts? RC: Our Country is one of my prouder moments. We were blown away by the participation and support from the Academy, production staff, DCP, the network, artists and the industry. We were able to work together to create a moment of respite and connection on a night we were supposed to have an awards show. DW: This is one of the most rewarding things I’ve worked on in my career. Everyone rallied around this, and it could not have happened this way in any other genre. We weren’t the first COVID-19 special, but we were the top viewed and had two hours of music. Props to Jack Sussman and CBS. It would have been easy to say no to this idea, but they embraced it. And it was his idea to reach out to Gayle King, and that was a really important component. She said yes right away and was a comforting presence in providing a hosting thread throughout the show. This went so well, maybe you should do shows on this timeline from now on. RC: We might like more than three weeks, but I will say we’re hatching a plan for September that I think will have everyone pleasantly surprised. How’s that for a tease? –Chuck Aly

QuaranTime with KRRV/Alexandria, LA PD/MD/morning personality Melissa Frost: I have had to rearrange everything I do for work, as I’m limited on the time that I can be at the station. That has taken a little getting use to! I wake up and get my day started with a bowl of Dynobites cereal then head straight into my home office/studio. I do the bulk of my work from home – imaging, voice work, promotions, etc. – then take a break to watch some old school television. After that, I head into the studio to meet up with my on air co-host to do our show...from a safe distance apart while both wearing masks. Once we’ve tracked the show, I head straight back home. I live solo. My parents don’t live too far from me, and I keep a check on them and am the runner if they need anything. I try my best to keep them entertained from afar to make things easier on them during this crazy time. With this newfound free time, I’ve rediscovered some of the things that I loved doing as a kid. I’ve slowed down long enough to pick up a pair of drumsticks and play for a while or pick up a guitar, and it’s been kind of nice. I’m cooking more, and I’ve started juggling again. You didn’t see that one coming, huh? Ha! Honestly, it’s been nice to go back and rediscover hobbies that were tucked away for years. I’m not sure if it’s the challenge of thinking outside the box to get my work done, or the amount of time I spend alone, but something has the creative juices following big time! We were right in the middle of our Country Cares For St. Jude Kids radiothon when everything started. It felt like the world was falling down around us, and there was nothing we could do to stop it, but we wrapped up the radiothon raising more than $100,000. That reassured me that, through the music we play and the message we convey on air, as long as we stick together, we’ve got this! I started looking at the positive side of things and how this was the time for local radio to shine. We had eight promotions going on with ticket giveaways, but that came to a screeching halt. Our focus promotionally is on our community and surrounding areas and how to keep people safe. Because our time is limited at the station, we’ve found that social media

has been a huge factor in keeping up with our audience. In terms of friends and family, this is where all of the video apps really shine. They give us a way to be with our families when we can’t, and that has been a very good thing. What are I’m bingeing: Tiger King on Netflix. I fought it and fought it, but I finally gave in. I’ve also been listening to older country music and am falling in love with this genre all over again. Go-to quarantine food: Pretty much anything I can get my hands on! Seriously, though, Honey Buns seem to have a special place in my heart during this pandemic. The silver lining: I’ve gone through the “quarantine phases” and am still super stressed out about what we’re all going through, but I truly find myself enjoying this slower paced life. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with more family time, and it’s cool to see people making the most of the situation. I’m getting more things done around the house and actually getting more work done. My station is sounding better than ever, too, because my creativity level is to the max. I also love seeing how radio people have come together to make the world a better place, and that’s one of the many things I hope we don’t forget when things go back to normal.
