REARING in mind the fact-Li that my band is being calledback from their well-earnedholiday especially to help outanother bandleader, I do feelthat more care could have beentaken by the indebted parties toexpress their thanks to them.

The first mention of theParnell cancellation of hisWimbledon Palais date onAugust 16 did not even botherto acknowledge our appearancewith Ted Heath! The follow-upletter from Parnell seemed tobe more of a placation to Heathregarding status.

Personally, I have little in-terest in anything of thatnature, believing instead that itis the public, anyway, who as-sess values.

However, backstage thanksshould have been expressed tothe public at the WimbledonPalais. I should like to hopethat you enjoy your entertain-ment from the boys of the TedHeath and Nat Temple Bands.

The article states " . .. spell-binding featurists Lita Roza andDickie Valentine " with no men-tion at all of vocalist DennisLotis. Surely credit is to begiven where due !

Having just come back froma holiday in Blackpool I assureyou Dennis Lotis is stll verymuch alive, and it is insultingnot to have mentioned his namewhen he is working just as hardas the others of the Heath team.

NME, when he lauded the play-ing of Don Rendall and TommyWhittle at the expense of thefar superior Ronnie Scott.

If Mr. Hall could only tell thedifference between a simplediminished chord and some ofthe far more interesting exten-sions of the minor sevenths, hewould realise that Ronnie Scottplays chord patterns far toocomplex and musically maturefor the comparatively uncul-tured ears of Whittle andRendall.

I wish it to be understoodthat I was present on both theoccasions to which Tony refers,and so far from outshiningRonnie Scott, Messrs. Rendalland Whittle didn't even do jus-tice to themselves.

As for the trombone playerswho played at the session andwho saw fit to offer theiropinions, I should have thoughtthat after their particular of-ferings they would be pleasedto forget the whole affair.Neither of them even started toplay. It is becoming increasinglyobvious Tony Hall is incapableof distinguishing between abeat and a bleat.

to clear up a few thingsabout British JATP would

you be kind enough to publishthis letter in your columns?

There seem to be many ru-mours about the presentposition of the presentationwhich I feel should be straight-ened out. First, JATP is notvery upset about the postpone-ment of the Festival Hall all-night dance.

True, this affair has caused usa lot of inconvenience and dis-appointment but I can assureyou the project isn't going tofold because of this setback. Allthe members of tile combine arestill as keen as ever and weare in the process of negotiat-ing for other premises.

Owing to our wish to pre-sent the attraction at suitablepremises, which are naturallyheavily booked, we may have towait several weeks before put-ting on the show. Announce-ments will be made as soon asthings are settled.

The response to the announce-ments of our Festival Hall showwas overwhelming and I am

now returning no less than1,507 lots of ticket money. Thesefigures of support should provethat it would be foolhardy forJATP to contemplate disband-ing.

Another rumour going aroundstates that certain of the mem-bers of the unit are resigning.This is untrue. Some of themembers have contracted workto fulfil and all members willcontinue to accept their nor-mal type of employment.

As far as possible, all mem-bers of the aggregation willappear with the unit but, wherewe have to use a deputy, thepublic will be informed byadvertisement.

Lastly, may I thank the pub-lic for its support and apologisefor any inconvenience causedthrough the postponement.

istry of Labour had re-fused to issue a work permit tothat great artist Louis Arm-strong I was very disappointed.

Like a lot of his fans overhere, I was not old enough toappreciate or understand"Satchmo's " music when helast came here.

And after hearing as many ofhis records as possible andgoing out of my way to see anyfilm that he was in, I wouldlike to see and hear him in theflesh.

When will the persons con-cerned realise that an artist ofLouis Armstrong's calibre canfoster a great deal of commonunderstanding between allnationalities?

my last visit to NewYork (last week) I was

able to visit Birdland, andto my pleasure, heard therethe new Count BasieOrchestra, seventeen -piece,led by Basie from piano andelectric organ.

The line-up is Paul Quini-cette, Eddie Davis, MarshallRoyal, Joe Newman, FreddyGreen, Gus Johnson, HenryCoker, Wendell Culley, R.Jones, T. Campbell, BixieCrawford, Ernie Wilkins, DennyPowell, Poopsie, Jimmy Lewisand Jimmy Wilkins.

LESTER YOUNGFeatured with the Basie Band

was the Lester Young Quintet;the programme commencedwith 'Leave Us Leap," whichnew tenor find, Paul Quinicette,soon had the crowd going. Theseemed to monopolise most ofthe solo playing.

Basie then invited Young tojoin his band for a battle ofthe tenors with Quincicette.You can believe it or not (Ihardly could!) but after aboutfifteen minutes of this the audi-ence were standing on tablesand chairs, screaming theirheads off !

The only other time I've seen

this happen was at Bop Citytwo years ago when LionelHampton was playing therewith his orchestra.

After the Basie Band cameYoung with his Quintet, butI'm afraid things fell a littleflat after the exciting exhibitionwe had just had.

The atmosphere woke up,however, when Oscar Petersoncame in and sat in on pianowith the Lester Young's group.I then heard some of the finestpiano playing I have ever heardin my life. He played like aman possessed.

After half an hour the Countcame on and sat in on organ. Ican tell you he really can playorgan in a way I've not heardbefore.

Later on I had a few minutes'chat with Basie, and he told methat after two weeks at Bird -land he is doing a week at theSavoy Ballroom in Harlem, andthen joins George Shearing andBilly Eckstine on their nation-wide tour.

SNOORIE'SMy next port of call was

Snookie's Restaurant on 47thStreet, to hear Oscar Pettiford'sBand, which has some of thebiggest names in dance music,such as Frank De Vito, LeeKonitz. Ruby Williams, Kai

Winding and Kenny Gorham.The band turned out some greatjazz, with Konitz excelling him-self.

Speaking to Pettiford later,he told me he expects to begoing over to Paris very shortlyand hopes to form a new group,bringing in Warne Marsh ontenor (he's late of Lennie Tris-tano's group). Oscar soundedvery hopeful about this newgroup, and thinks he will dowell with it.

SYMPHONY SIDWhen I left Snookie's, around

four a.m., I popped along to theDownbeat Club, where Sym-phony Sid, who put GeorgeShearing on the map in theStates, was presenting his ibandshow.

Personnel was Zoot Sims,Serge Chaloff, George Walling-ton, Charlie Mingus, withKenny Clarke on drums, dep-ping for Max Roach whorecently broke his thumb in afight !

The Downbeat Club, being areserved kind of place, did notseem to warm to the music asmuch as the other places I hadvisited, but nevertheless theappreciation was there.

Mingus seems to be one of theup-and-coming bass players in

INTERESTING story concerns a bass -player,.1- noted for his somewhat intellectual prowess,who is in a wall -known band.

This player saw fit to plough his way to andfrom work on a bike ; all went well until he waspinched for failing to stop at a " Halt" sign.

Undaunted, he went to court, pleaded guilty,and to the amazement of his colleagues, the casewas dismissed.

It worked this way. Our boy always carriedwith him a copy of the Cycling Act, which statesthat all " Halt " signs must be erected on a postof their own in a prominent position....

And then he pointed out that the particular onewhich he was charged with 'not halting at, wasillegal, owing to the fact it was nailed to a tele-graph pole.

Oh, well done, sir !* *

player Kenny Baker disappears from themusical scene to take a well-earned vacation inCornwall. See you when you get back nice andbronzed, Kenny !

POLL-WINNING bandleader Ted Heath should

keep an eye on the " gen " supplied for hisadvance publicity. I saw some bills advertisinghis appearance at a fashionable resort recently,which indicated that such artists as Jack Parnelland Jackie Armstrong would be with the band,

Hope none of the two Jacks' fans went along tothe date-or you'd have some awkward explainingto do, Ted !

NEWS of bass -player Alf Craske, who workedfor some time at the Piccadilly Hotel after

being demobbed from the RAF at the end of thewar.

He has been playing more " legit " music withorchestras in Manchester and Bournemouth, andat the moment is living hi a caravan sited in alocal beauty spot just outside Bournemouth, whichto believe you have to see.

This set-up Alf and his wife are enjoying verymuch, their one regret being " the cards on thetable " indicating that an early return to Londonseems inevitable,

seems to indicate that the boys are a bitwhacked by the arduous itinerary which is beingset them.

During their date at Edinburgh a local heat -wave prevailed, and an inviting notice outside theballroom stated : " Come in, it's cooler inside."

On entering, one found the place crammed full,and everyone sweltering. The boys in the bandwere perspiring so much they looked rather as ifthey were playing in the shallow end of a swim-ming pool!

NICE " lumber " by two members of a well-knownband, operating in the provinces, which had

some chaotic results. These two practical jokersdonned a couple of old caps and white jackets,armed themselves with a brush each and pots ofwhite gloss paint ...then strolled around the townpainting out the street name signs

The town being jammed full of holidaymakers,you can well imagine the results. Incidentally,nobody said a word to the two jokers the wholeof the time they were " working " !

MEW edition of the " Calling All Forces" broad-cast." came into being this week, entitled "Forces

All -Star Bill," and is produced by BBC's DennisMain -Wilson.

On a broadcast of this type it was good to hearguest star Kenny Baker playing some good jazz,and Betty Driver being allowed to sing withouther comedy " tripe and onions " voice. This girlsings a straight ballad really well, when per-mitted.

Stanley Black and the boys handled a lot ofmusic in the immaculate manner we have grown

* *TOOK a run into Torquay for a short stay and

heard the bands of two musical personalities,who, although worlds apart in style, have an ex-ceptionally high standard.

First, up to the Imperial Hotel, where Billy Munn(remember him on " Jazz Club " ?) is knockingthe customers for six with his brand of sophisti-cated piano-istics. The atmosphere in this verylush ballroom is so distinctive I fail to understandwhy the BBC don't relay Billy from there-defi-nitely an " Arabian Nights " evening.

Next down to the " 400," where the Leslie Doug-las outfit is pleasing the customers with everythingfrom Herman to Cotton. During a chat with thedirectors of this establishment I learned that fortheir money Leslie was tops !

The Douglas band works hard, appears on time,has no characters and no complaints. Here's aband I predict will have very few days " out."

In company with others I enjoyed a lunch inLeslie's de luxe caravan home, prepared by hischarming wife Barbara.

Faux Pas of the Week Department : Concernsa popular piano -playing musical director, who onthis particular occasion had been playing a some-what lengthy medley of his personal successes, dur-ing which time the boys in the band had to sitsilently on the stand,

After this situation had gone on for some timethe pianist -MD raised an eyebrow at the silentmusicians, and caustically remarked : " I wish Iwas a musician."

" If they write good about you, that's good !

If they write bad about you, that's good !

If they don't write about you-that's BAD !"

BACK from a successful vacation-Pat and MaryDodd. Pat, now back with the " Skyrockets,"

told me they had a great time.. Nothing butsunshine, steak and bogies.'"

THE musicians who went on the Danny KayeA' tour have just had a nice little " thank you"

from Danny. Each has received a real leatherwallet, with stamped gold edges, and their ownfirst name and a facsimile Danny Kaye signaturealso embo,sed in gold on it.

Also each member of the Ray Martin Orchestrawas given a personal portrait of Danny,autographed to him personally.

PASSING through Herne Bay the other weekend,I spied a bill advertising a Ted Heath pre-

sentation of Roy Wade and his Music at a localpublic function.

Name bands of two or three years ago may wellremember Roy. the distinguished mustachioedleader of the local outfit at the Pavilion, Gilling-ham-an outfit from which came such names asTommy Whittle, Ronnie Verrall, Arthur Greensladeand " Weed " Macdonald.

Roy is currently pleasing the customers in theMedway area with a ten -piece outfit, which I hearreally jumps, I believe the band has a " book"second to none. Hope to have the pleasure ofhearing the band for myself before very long.

*ACHARACTER whose activities in the jazz

world have been extensive, but somewhatstrangely quiet of late, was seen dining at thePastoria Hotel last week, with a film man whohas a personal leaning towards jazz.

Rumours are that these two have signed a con-tract, and that a new club will be opening soon,with Mr. Film Man giving big financial backing.

* * *I WONDER why ? ... The Johnson Brothers made

a couple of records recently for Decca, onwhich they were accompanied by a certain bigorchestra. Both recordings have been scrapped,and now re -made ; this time the boys are accom-panied by Ted Heath's Band.

* * *PAUL RICH, the vocalist with Lou Preager at

Hammersmith Palais, is in his element thisweather, because at every available moment he'sout sailing in his 12 -ft. Firefly class yacht" Giselle."

These Fireflies became popular here after the1948 Olympics and Paul tells me there are nowsome twelve hundred of them all over Britain

He himself is a member of the newly -formedWelsh Harp Sailing Association (he's on the WelshHarp at Hendon every week -end) and forty or soof these craft can be seen there, and there's rac-ing between clubs, etc.

Incidentally, Paul throws an open invitation forenthusiasts in the music nrofession to join himSaturday mornings on the " Giselle " to act ascrew. Contact the NME office, those who wouldlike to have a go at this.

Per, naps I should just mention that the Fireflyyachts carry twenty -foot masts and about a hun-dred square feet of canvas!

PIANIST Gerry Moore is another holidaymakerback in town this week -end, looking as brown

as any berry, and now back- at Merry's Club, inBaker Street, W.

Gerry spent his vacation quietly at Rottingdean-tells me he had to take his pet budgerigar Withhim and, perhaps because of the strong light ortoo much air, or something, the bird had a kindof fit, dashed itself around the room, and nowseems to be blind from concussion.

However, Dizzy (the bird !) is having the bestof attention from the vet., and Gerry thinks hewill be OK again before long

first plunge into band promo-tion.BEHIND THE NEWS : Mitch Miller's

been looking, fans have beenhoping= leaders were prayingthat Mitch would put his mindand art to work on a musicaldance band, to aid in thecurrent surge of added bandbusiness. But instead of theWoody Herman or DukeEllington Band, it's the ArtLowry Orchestra (notice thechange in words), and, accord-ing to our reports, orchestrait is, direct from such swankNew York clubs as The Stork.Word in the trade is that itwill be a versatile band which,in my experience, means thatit will be only a fair band-theversatile band, like the manwith the broad mind, is sooften lacking in depth. Colum-bia promises great things fromtheir thirteen men and wide-open echo chamber, but Idoubt it.

Kenton reorganising part ofhis band.BEHIND THE NEWS: It was com-

mon knowledge two weeksago that Stan was unhappywith the musical output of hisBand. Frankly, I feel that ithad more to do with the out -in -left -field stance that Stanand his music have taken inthe last year, but there wereevidences of musical strain inthe orchestra. Stan incorpor-ated the integral part of thenew Maynard Ferguson Band,by bringing Maynard and hisvocalist -wife Kay Brown intothe Kenton fold, Kay for the

byBILL COSSfirst time. Altoist Vinni Deanreplaced Lennie Neihaus,Keith Moon and Frank Roso-lino (famous for his work withthe Georgie Auld group)entered the trombone section,drummer Stan Levy andguitarist Sal Salvador became,with Stan, the new rhythmsection.

Les Paul and Mary Ford haveturned into autograph hounds.BEHIND THE NEWS: If Palladium -

goers in September find ithard to get Les and Mary tosign their autograph books, it'sonly because the Paul's have amission of their own. Despite her tender twenty-two years , Miss Clooney wasquite qualified to cope with hersudden success, for in terms ofexperience she was already ashow business veteran.

Born in Maysville, Kentucky,she was thirteen when herfamily moved to Cincinatti, andthree years later a friend per-suaded her to audition for asinging assignment on one ofthe local radio station's kiddieprogrammes.

Rosemary was hired withoutfurther ado, and with heryounger sister Bettie, she com-menced a regular series ofappearances on The MoonRiver Show. Bandleader TonyPastor heard them while play-ing a one-nighter in the city,and when he left the ClooneySisters went along too, as hisfeatured vocalists.

NoveltiesTogether, they made some-

thing of an impression withsuch novelties as " There's AMan At the Door to See You,"which Jack Jackson spun a fewtimes in 1949, and "It's A Cruel,Cruel World," while on balladsthe two girls were heardseparately.

A recording that the band cutof " Sentimental Music," withRosemary strongly featured,led to her solo contractwith Columbia, and before long"Me and My Teddy Bear " wasbeing heard in many placesoutside the nurseries for whichit was primarily intended.

Rosemary still likes thisbetter than any of her otherdiscs, and declares that she ismost proud of all to have foundfavour with juvenile audiences,

ducer Donald Maclean'slast assignments before heleaves for London (NME 1-8-52)will be a 35 -minute spot onAugust 22, featuring the GordonShields Orchestra and JimmyAlston.

Shields, one of the king -pinsof Glasgow's Cameo Ballroomsince 1946, is also pianist andarranger for the popular vocalgroup, Six in Accord, heardweekly in the . Scottish radioseries " It's All Yours." JimmyAlston, featured vocalist forthis stint, is also with the Six.

" The music for this session,"Gordon told the NME, " will bein the Felix King style-onevery dear to me since, in mymind, it combines all that isgood both musically and com-mercially."

Of the 12 numbers played onthe session, seven will be non -vocal.

Line-up for the broadcast is:Johnny Bills, Tommy Chalmers,Bobby Thomson and TommyMcAllister (saxes); CharlesGreer (trumpet)'; Tommy Long -will (drums); Jimmy Kelly(bass); and Gordon himself onpiano.

The programme will be airedfrom 7.20 to 7.55 p.m.

To a hardened adult, herheart -felt " Tenderly " wouldseem to make the same sort ofdirect appeal but unfortunatelyit is not the songs which MissClooney really sings that haveso far taken the popular fancy.

mainly clicked through the gim-mick appeal of William Saroy-an's Armenian -type lyrics andStan Freeman's hip harpsi-chord underlying them, andnow " Botch -A -Me " is a directand convincing attempt to cash -in on a similar formula.

Even " Half As Much " wasdismissed by Metronome criticGeorge T. Simon as " A clumsysong, what with all its huddledsyllables, and the backing ispretty unimaginative stuff," butmost solid citizens of the USAthought otherwise and in allprobability the British populacewill follow suit.

One thing that is likely toconsolidate Rosemary's world-wide success is her recently -clinched deal with ParamountPictures.

She made her screen debutwith opera star Lauritz Melchiorin " The Stars Are Sing-ing," which has not yet beengenerally shown, but it pleasedthe studio executives so muchthat they have offered her thepart originally written for BettyHutton in " Topsy and Eva."

tures, Rosemary waxed a set ofeight Academy Award -winningsongs with Harry James andBand in support during MitchMiller's recent trip to California-Mitch has been the man be-hind all her recent sessions, nomatter whose names appear onthe labels-and the album isscheduled for Stateside releaselate this month.

This, we feel, was a fine ideaon Mr. Miller's part, and it willbe interesting to hear how wellthe results measure up to ex-pectations.

From them, we should be ableto tell for sure just how wellRosemary will fit into thescheme of things when thetrends swing back to real musiconce again.

THE first side is an Italian -styled lyric which I'm sure

is going to be a big hit, andyou'll have to go a long wayto better the Clooney version.She belts the lyric over in anexciting way; plenty of lifehere.

Credit is also due to thebacking she gets from StanFreeman's harpsichord, FrankCarroll's bass, Terry Snyder'sdrums, and the guitars of Mun-dell Lowe and Sal Salvador.They put down a colossal beatthat drives the singers all theway.

This is infectious stuff, which,in the words of American pub-licity men should " garner lotsof loot "

Reverse is a ballad, givensensitive treatment by thesinger with effective orchestrasupport by Percy Faith.

This disc is well worth get-ting for " Botch -A -Me " alone.

*ROY ELDRIDGE AND HIS" LITTLE JAZZ " ENSEMBLE

"Estrad Swing "" No Rolling Blues "

(Esquire 10-235)THE Eldridge horn, backed up

by a Swedish group, makesfor some good music. Surpris-ingly, Roy's trumpet work isovershadowed by the excellenceof the " continental cats," par-ticularly the very modern ideasof Lou Sandy on what I thoughtwas a mellophone, but which is,in fact, a bass trumpet.

The first side has an auspici-ous piano intro by Charles Nor-man, then follows an ensembletheme, based on " I GotRhythm." There are no prizesgiven for discovering this fact,as Lou Sandy gives the gameaway in his fine solo.

He is followed by someLester -like tenor from Carl-Hendrik Norm ; good stuff, andthen Roy make his entrance, buthe is not as good as what hasalready gone on before him.

The rhythm swings all theway, and I like the balance ofthe drums-nice and tight andcrisp.

Reverse is a vocal, by Roy,who sings engagingly in hishigh-pitched voice, but itdoesn't add up to much. despitesome good figures the band blowbehind him, and some effectivetremolo piano work.

You'll like the other side,though, particularly the swellwork of the bass trumpet man,who reminds me very much ofDennis Rose when he used toplay French horn and knockeveryone out - including him-self !

FRANKIE LAINE"High Noon"

THEtheme song from the film

"High Noon" gets a dramaticand pulsating reading fromFrankie LaMe. After the LitaRoza version, I must admit thatthis is quite definitely a malevocalist's song - it sounds too" polite " from a girl.

Backing is a two -beat hand -clapper, a western -styled opus.The singer does well and thechorus, under the direction of

Jimmy Carroll, back him ex-cellently. I particularly likethe high -soaring voice of thegirl lead-bet she could turn ina good solo job herself.

"CARNIVAL" is the popular

instrumental compositionthat Harry James did so well awhile back. Now it has beengiven a good lyric, which isright up " Mr. B's " street.

What a thrilling quality thesinger's voice has, especially hislower register stuff, full ofdepth and vitality. He handlesthis song with masterful ease.Pete Rugolo's orchestra lendgood support.

But the accompaniment on

RDthe second side is far superior,by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.I don't know who Riddle is, butfor me his name on a labelstands for an accompaniment offirst class quality. Rememberhis work on Nat Cole's " Unfor-gettable " ?

" Ask Me " is the tune I'mtipping for future honours onthe hit parade. and Eckstinegives a caressing version to it-quite exceptional, even for him.There's a lovely concert -styledpiano intro, a good trombonepassage, and a lush stringchorus.

This is exceptional Eckstine.I can't blame his fans for really" going " for these two sides.

BILLY COTTON'S BAND" The Boom Song "" Gently Johnny "

(Decca F9937)TT is funny how certainA phrases get tags stuck onthem by musiciaro. For in-stance, there's the one you usedto hear that ended most of theold Dixieland tunes-you knowthe one, called " without -a -shirt." Then there was the old-fashioned intro, fondly labelledby the boys the " bring -on -the -dancing -women " phrase.

So you can imagine my sur-prise and pleasure when Iplaced this record on myancient portable and discoveredthat the " Boom Song " is noneother than the " bring -on -the -you -know -what " phrase dressedup with a cute lyric, by a Mr.Hoffman.

The Cotton Band do my petphrase full justice, and AlanBreeze is as always, a tower ofstrength, supported by the Ban-dits, a vocal group.

The reverse, which has noconnection at all with a well-known plastic -alto player, hassome nice full ensemble workfrom the band, but on this sidethe Bandits live up to theirname and rob some notes oftheir full value. They tend toclip and snatch phrases ratherjerkily.

Gently, boys and girls, gently !*

ANDRE PREVIN" September In The Rain "" Lullaby Of Broadway "

(HMV B10296)PREVIN is one pianist who is

always a mystery to me. Hehas great talent, a beautifultouch, ideas, a fine keyboardtechnique, and yet lacks thoseessential qualities that makefor a good jazzman-relaxationand a beat. To my mind he hasneither.

Let's examine these two sidesto see if we can discover what iswrong.

" September." taken well upin tempo, is marred by several" be-boppy " figures that try tcsound clever and modern. Theyare not. There is a lot of Tatumin the piano -man's work here,but he has not the taste or re-serve of Art.

He uses his technique to showoff far too much, and you getthe impression that what he hasto say in five hundred notes.Garner would say in five-andmore effectively.

He is not relaxed here, and ablock chord chorus with guitaris rushed. Coda is effective.though.

Flip side has an Eddie Hey-wood type of bass figure run -

over these important sides.ning through the tune. This isbetter and shows the clean softtouch of the pianist, but noticehow badly he interprets aphrase which ends with twoquavers - he has the " legit "jerk, which a straight man has,when trying to play dancemusic.

Strange, that, for a modernyoung musician (he is in hisearly twenties). Also, he hasa tendency to repeat certainphrases time and time again.

And yet I can still vecommendthis disc to piano students, be-cause it teaches a lesson Forhere is a musician, with loads oftechnique, an enviable touch.

Previn should take advantageof the fact that he is surroundedby first-rate jazz pianists, theworld's best, and should try toassimilate a little of what theyall are outstanding for. At themoment it seems he is obliviousto what is going on in his owncountry, which was, and still is,the birthplace of good jazz.

" Kiss Of Fire "" When "

(Cap. CL.13765)YET another version of "Kiss,"

this time by a singer who isunknown in this country.

Beavers has a stylish andvirile voice, of the light tenorvariety, and both his dictionand phrasing are excellent Hesings the song straight-forwardly, and tries no tricks,which is just as well, with thisdifficult song, a test for anysinger of merit.

Reverse is an attractive bal-lad, very much suited to the

singer's type of voice.

AFTER listening to thisthirty minutes of mood

music, I unhesitatingly rate theRay Martin Score to be highenough to place him wellaround the top of the league!

It is quite easy to understandthe reason for his phenomenalrise to success in the space ofa few short years. Here is aman who knows exactly whatthe public wants, and withoutsacrificing good musicianship,he is prepared to give it tothem.

What do the public want?you may well ask. Well, afterlong experience in this sphereof entertainment, often side-tracked by passing enthusiasmsand almost persuaded of thepublic's fickle fancy, I am stillof the opinion that they fun-damentally desire but onething of music and musicians-the Melody.

Before this invites the wrathof the jazz gods upon my head,let me qualify this statement.

Hand-pickedWhenever using the word

" public," the more discerningminorities are not included,and although they are not tobe ignored, in a general state-ment, can consider themselvesabove or below such, accordingto the size of the hat.

Of course, a conductor's job,even if he has arrived at astate of mind that is co-ordi-nated with his listener, stillrequires other virtues. Whatmelodies would they like? Whatis the best way to dress themup? Where to place them in theprogramme, and above all, howto get the best out of thearrangements.

Mr. Martin seems to haveacquired most of them.

The orchestra was composedof the usual hand-picked gath-ering of sessioneers who areheard around the BBC moreoften than the Greenwich timesignal, a fact which provesthat their workmanship shouldbe above reproach.

There were no outstandingsoloists, although the "WhistlingFiddler" spotlighted some finework from the first violin desk.

In the verbal department,Robin Boyle was the right manon the right show. Good de-livery, concise, yet informative.

Opinion: Melodious music forthe masses.

DANNY LEVAN AND HISSEXTET

with THE STARGAZERSSaturday, August 2, 11.25 to

11.56 p.m. LightIHAVE a set routine for-1-

re-viewing radio shows, which

is as follows. A first hearing,which I record on a tape -machine, during which I get areaction to the programme asa whole. A second concentratedhearing is used for gatheringdetails, and then, as the type-writer merrily clicks away, athird hearing in the backgroundjust for the hell of it.

After Stage One connectedWith this show, my reactionwas abstract.

Stage Two began to get meworried, for details were fewand far between.

In Stage Three, the type-writer did not click merrilyaway at all, for the very goodreason that I am not a jour -

Our Radio Critic suggests that theanswer, in a word, is the MELODY

nalistic genius who can prattleon, regardless, about a nonde-script subject.

Still, I can but try. Pick anyfirst-class session violinist, puthim in front of a good pianist,clarinettist, accordionist. Fill upthe hole with anything you likethat adds up to a Sextet.

Pop around to the publishersfor some " pop " arrangements.Rehearse for the BBC's allottedthree hours-and there youhave it!

Danny Levan and his Sex-tet, or, A. Rose and his Band,who would smell as sweet byany other name.

Smug, satisfiedThis, of course, boils down to

the fact that here is an outfitwhich one can neither raveabout nor revile, it producing asmug, satisfied sound, com-pletely lacking in personality,the like of which we all toooften hear on the air. It has yetto take the short but difficultstep between workmanship andartistry.

The Stargazers have sincelong taken that step, and verysuccessfully too. On this pro-gramme, they proved that theyhave the technique, the tonalblend and the united " zing " tomatch up with the best of theAmericans - which is whateveryone considers to be thehighest praise these days !

One small point. The drill ofthis group has always been itsforte, and whether in comedyor otherwise, the password hasalways been precision. Whathappened to the rhythmicalclapping in " Sugarbush " Idon't know. It sounded like de-sultory applause at Lord's.

However, this is all hyper-

criticism, but as the Stargazershave gained the heights, thenif they momentarily slip, it mustbe expected.

Opinion : So-so, so-so, prettybride !

THE MUSIC OF FREDDIEPHILLIPS

Monday, August 4, 10 to10.30 a.m. Light

HERE was a valiant attemptto produce a novel sound,

combining good taste with acommercial trait. The latterwe'll take for granted as a con-dition insisted on by the BBCwhen allotting the half-hour toFreddie Phillips.

The former we'll take forgranted, because I doubt if any-body has ever heard him other-wise.

The all -in effect of a smallstrings and woodwind orchestra,dominated by the maestro'sguitar, struck a much needednote of novelty in the realm oflight music. The impact on theaverage listener, however, musthave been considerably les-sened by some misguided pointsof policy.

Armchair MusicFirstly. This is armchair

music, pipe, slippers and passthe decanter. Or for those whohaven't yet reached the age ofmature pleasures-settee, music,amour, soft lights (and if thephone rings, don't answer it).

But what it certainly isn't, isten o'clock in the morningmood, with Hoover, dirty dishesand the greengrocer's boy as asetting.

Could we not then, have Mr.

WHO PLAYED THE TENOR?A letter to the

IWAS tremendously impressedby the exhibition of musical

scholarship displayed by criticSteve Race, who, on his pro-gramme of Lester Young, re-vealed that Basie's " HarvardBlues" featured Young and notDon Byas, as we have all beenled to believe in the past.

For over twelve years now,the general public and the musi-cians alike have been sufferingunder this delusion that Byaswas featured on " HarvardBlues " and not Lester "Young.Count Basie thought so. DonByas thought so. Even LesterYoung thought so.

But at last Steve Race has un-covered the astounding truth.

It is a comfort to know thatjazz lovers in this country haveworking for the betterment ofmodern music a man so wellversed in the idiom that he cantell Byas from Young so wellthat even Byas and Young standcorrected.

Reg has in the past beenarranger for the Arthur Row -berry Band, and has playedwith most of the better-knownMidland groups.

Phillips as a " p.m." instead ofan " a.m." music maker? And asoften as possible?

Secondly. Presuming thatthis was merely a slight over-sight on the part of the pro-gramme planners, why notallow the group to lapse alittle more into the Spanish at-mosphere? There is plenty ofpopular music that is fitting tothe idiom, and the present ideaof putting current " plugs " in-discriminately into an unwel-come environment, is unnatural,and consequently sounds un-comfortable.

Segovia -likeThe delightful Segovia -like

guitar solos, thus caused themain body of the show to sufferby comparison. This, I am sure,as Mr. Phillips is more estab-lished as a guitarist than aleader, is the last thing hewanted to happen. My com-miserations on being a victimof circumstances.

Thirdly. The show warrants avocalist.

Instrumentally, the stringswere ideal, the rhythm admir-able, but the solo positioning ofthe clarinet seemed to call fora little more solo virtuositythan the player present had tooffer.

Opinion: A Phillips soul that'stoo good to be trodden on,

HARRY LEADER & HISBAND

Friday, August 1, 12.45 to1.30 p.m. Light

I'M torn twixt two desires. Tobe laudatory about a band-

leader who is trying very hardto do a good job of taking hisband out crf the rut. Or to stickto my resolve of only beingconcerned as to whether abroadcast is good, bad or in-different by the best standards.

Well, clad in shining armourand carrying the banner oftruth, I must sally forth to dobattle by saying this show wasindifferent.

Even if nowadays danceband broadcasts are destined tobe the publishers' paradise, onlythe engagement of the bestpersonnel and the use of in-spired arrangements will putthe proceedings out of theordinary.

Mr. Leader, I'm afraid, pos-

sessed neither on this session,and although two free-lancevocalists performed as skil-fully as one would expect, see-ing they broadcast with all andsundry, and the band was wellrehearsed for the occasion, theultimate effect was anotherpiece of nondescription withoutany great heights or depths.

VocalistsWhilst mentioning vocalists,

a word of praise for the versa-tility of Marie Benson, but aword of rebuke for the "clin-ker " in "For the Very FirstTime." Still, all is forgiven asshe is not prone to this habit,and I'm sure it will be for thevery last time.

Mark Pasquin's competentand sympathetic voice was acommendable contrast to themerry vocal pranks of MissBenson, but still had no moreinspired moments than it hadwith Hall and Sundry.

The Band had a few solospots ; a mention of them indi-vidually, however, would doneither them nor my conscienceany good.

The announcer gabble dgamely but gormlessly, and ifhe's the type who writes hisscript during the previous num-ber-how else!

Opinion: A gallant failure.* *

VVHEN Winifred Atwellwalked on to the stage

of the London Palladiumlast Monday she realisedone of her major ambitions !

Several years ago, whenshe was playing one of thesmaller theatres just outsidetown ... " My name was waydown the bill, and hardlyanyone knew me in thosedays. A pressman happenedto come backstage, andcalled in on me while he wasthere. We chatted, and inthe course of conversationhe asked me my ambition.

" I replied that it was to playthe London Palladium, andpromptly thought no more aboutit until a couple- of days laterwhen I actually saw my ownwords in cold print !

" I was completely shattered,and quite shocked at my ownnerve to even suppose that I-a very struggling artist-couldever hope to make the Palle -.diem.

" I think I avoided the otherartists for the rest of that week,as I felt sure they would belaughing at my temerity."

ChemistWinnie's career story began

when most children would stillbe playing with dolls. From theage of six, she could play thepiano and organ with more thannormal adult efficiency; in fact,she can hardly remember atime when she could not play.At that tender age she was inmuch demand for charity con-certs and parties, and as shegrew older the obsession formusic increased.

Her father wanted her tobecome a chemist-like himself,so that one day she could followon with the family business.Winnie's mother, knowing herdaughter's restless temperamentrather wanted this, too, so thatit would keep her at hoMe.

Dutifully Winnie went throughcollege, and took her pharma-

She received a small allow-ance from home, but had to lookaround for a few playingengagements to help things out.

One day in 1947 (about a yearafter she had arrived here) shefound herself in agent KeithDevon's office. Keith says : " Iwas immediately struck withWinnie's unusual appearanceand personality; she told me shewas a pianist, and after I hadheard her play I was consider-ably impressed with the brilli-ance of her technique.

running a Sunday concert atthe London Casino, and MissCarole Lynne-who was one ofthe stars on the bill-was un-fortunately taken ill and there-fore unable to appear.

Pianist Alexander Borovskywas her idol, and her youthfuldream came true the day shewas able to hear him play inperson. She had an introduc-tion to him later and he askedtier to play for him. Winniedid so, and to her joy he toldher that she had great talent.This gave her every encourage-ment to continue with hermusic, and she finally decidedto leave home and studyfurther afield.'

" My judgment of her abili-ties proved to be correct, forshe was an instant success atthat concert.

" I then suggested to Winniethat I thought she would, do wellplaying the variety theatres, andwith this purpose in mind Iplaced her around some of thesmaller theatres in order togive her experience of playingthis type of work.

" From then on I watched her

performance continuously fromthe front-week after week, andmade various suggestions toimprove her act. Winnie-always a very willing learner-took my advice with such re-sults that after being under mydirection for only two months Iwas able to place her as anattraction at the London Casino

Five years later Keith Devonnow has the great satisfactionof seeing her reach the apex ofher career, with this Palladiumengagement.

He pays tribute to that soliddetermination possessed byWinnie, by saying : " Apart frommy own efforts on Winnie'sbehalf, no one has workedharder and practised longerthan she has. Even now sheworks untiringly at the job ofpleasing her public, and no oneis more deserving of successthan Winifred Atwell."

Jack JacksonAnother landmark stands out

in Winnie's career, and onewhich perhaps boosted her totop -of -the -bill position soonerthan she would otherwise havearrived there. Winnie tells thestory in her own words.

" I was playing at PengeEmpire during March last year,and on the same bill (althoughmuch higher than me) was JackJackson. He had always takena great interest in my work, andit so happened that during thisparticular week some peoplecame down from Deeca to seeJack. He insisted that they sawmy act, and really ' sold ' me tothem; they became interestedand shortly afterwards I mademy first recording for Decca.

"My first hit recording was°Jezebel ' and gradually salesof all my records worked to-wards very comfortable figures.Of course, with the famousBlack and White Rag' which I

recorded last September, Ialmost shot to fame overnight !

more surprised about that thanI was, as I had only recordedthe side as a laugh-the moreimportant number was to bethe ' Cross Hands Boogie.' How-ever, that's often how it is inshow business, alad the Rag

her own fan mail is still one ofher biggest thrills. " Peoplewho don't even know me, writesuch wonderful things-I can'ttell you what a kick I get outof reading all the letters. Theonly thing that bothers me thesedays is that I have to take a bitlonger to get around to answer-ing them all."

What does this charming andfriendly star do when off duty ?

That infectious smile spreadsover Winnie's face as shereplies : " I read detectivethrillers, and do endless cross-words. One of my fans in Ire-land sends me bundles ofcomics-and I even read those!"

No biographical story aboutWinnie would be complete with-out mention of her two dollmascots.

One is white and is called"Dusty," and the other, " Lilly -white," is black. The dolls arequite small and go -everywherewith Winnie, carried in herhandbag.

" They were given to meabout the time my luck seemedto change, and they have beenlucky for me ever since. I justhope their good luck holds."

A Word toYoung MusiciansTHERE IS a most significant item in our

news -pages this week. Tito Burns an-nounced that he would hold auditions fora trumpet -player to replace Albert Hall,and no fewer than thirty instrumentaliststurned up on Wednesday afternoon to gothrough their paces. Tito and Albertlistened to them all very carefully andmost sympathetically, for they weregenuinely anxious to discover any sparkof talent that might be developed.

WHAT HAPPENED? Regretfully, they had noalternative but to agree that the standardwas not only low, but impossible! Not oneof the players came up to scratch, and thethirty auditionees were sent on their waywhile Tito and Albert shook their headsin bewilderment.

SO DO WE. It is a dreadful commentary onthe profession today that a plum berth likethis should be so difficult to fill. Trueenough, this is a bad week and all the bestplayers are out of town, but that is at bestjust an excuse. There should be enoughup-and-coming young players to fill anyjobs that are going . . . but there aren't.

THE BLUNT truth of the matter is that fartoo many youngsters today are callingthemselves musicians and consideringthemselves to belong to that highly -skilledprofession and yet their academic back-ground is nil. They can't play their in-struments properly because they've never

to be taught, and never botheredto practise. It hasn't been necessary when,aided and abetted by their innate love ofmusic, they have busked their way into theaffections of some undiscriminating fansand thought themselves geniuses. Theirknowledge of their instruments is super-ficial, yet they believe it is all -embracing.They believe, in fact, that they " know itall."

DO YOU remember the sound common-sensethat Kenny Baker talked in the recentbiography we published in these pages?He said, when asked to give advice toyoung players: " Tell 'em . . . to learn theirinstrument properly. Nowadays, not enoughtrouble or care is taken about academicplaying. There are guys in the jazz busi-ness today who don't know anything,musically speaking; how can they ever begreat jazz players if they haven't got asolid musical background to build on?You must tread the academic road if youwant to get anywhere."

TAKING HIS own advice has broughtKenny Baker to the very top of the tree.and if more young players followed hiswprds of wisdom, they might have got theTito Burns job on Wednesday! What ismore, to paraphrase Kipling, they'd " bea musician, my son !"

COMMENCING August 24, Columbia recording MDNorrie Paramor will be having two series running

simultaneously on Radio Luxembourg.In addition to his present

series of piano broadcasts withrhythm section, Norrie is to con-duct a 15 -piece orchestra forthe new " Empire Show " serieswhich commences on that dateand will be broadcast weekly onSundays at the peak time of 8p.m.

Instrumentation of t h eorchestra will be five strings,two reeds, three brass andfour rhythm, and the outfit willbe used singersTeddy Johnson and Pearl Carr.

In this series, Norrie Paramorbecomes an actor for the firsttime, as scriptwriter TeddyJohnson has written in a fewlines for the maestro to say.

PHILLIPS' £1,000,000 ALL-OUTGRAMOPHONE RECORD BID TO BE

LAUNCHED IN JANUARYRumours mount as Leonard Smith andNorman Newell resign from Columbia

RUMOURS which for some time past have raged inAmsterdam and London concerning the impending

switch of the American Columbia catalogue to thePhillips Electrical organisation gained new impetus witha statement made today over the telephone to the NME'sLondon offices by a senior executive of the Dutch con-cern in Amsterdam.

This statement said that the take-over of thenew label would definitely be effective as fromJanuary 1, 1953.

This transcontinental phonecall confirmed that the initialpressings will be made in Hol-land, but that negotiations arewell advanced for this operationto take place in London even-tually.

No confirmation or denialcould be obtained of the reportthat plant recently deliveredfrom Germany to a site in thesuburbs of London was for useby the new concern.

One rumour in Amsterdamwhich has gained great promin-ence, and seems highly crediblein the eyes of well-informed ob-servers, is the report that thePhillip s' gramophone -recordbudget for the first year will be£1,000,000, on a monthly alloca-

tion of £90,000.Experts feel that this is not

an unreasonable figure in viewof the large amount of cashneeded for the production andexploitation of the AmericanColumbia label under its newcontrol.

Meanwhile, in London, theNME has received a writtenstatement from Norman Newelladvising us of the resignationfrom the Columbia company ofhimself and his immediatechief, Leonard Smith, ColumbiaArtists' Manager.

Enclosed with this announce-ment was a copy of the letterof resignation which Mr. Smithhad sent to Mr. B. Mittell ofEMI. In his letter, Leonard

ELLINGTON FOUR HELDON MECCA CIRCUIT

THE business drawn in on the± Mecca circuit by the RayEllington Quartet has been ofsuch magnitude that the circuitbooker, Mr. Morley, has re-newed the group's contract fora further three months fromSeptember 22 to December 21.

Late this week it was knownthat a residency for the grouphad been the subject of discus-sion between the Quartet andthe Mecca management.

We gather that while the firmfavours a sojourn for the groupat a northern Palais, Ray andthe boys would much prefer tocome south ,again after theirlong provincial tour.

The northern venue underdiscussion may well be theLocarno. Liverpool, at which

the Quartet were due to appearin two weeks' time. The NMEnow understands that followinga week at the Ritz, Manchester,the group goes to the PlazaBallroom in the same city,instead of moving west toLiverpool.

This alteration in itinerarywould be in keeping with anymove to present the Ray Elling-ton Four at the Locarno forany length of time.

Additional Ellington news isthat the boys will again beappearing in the " Goon Show "series which airs again inNovember. Fans can, however,hear them earlier when theyappear in the " Forces All -StarBill " which is being recordedon August 17.

At Finsbury Park Empire this week, Ambrose is presentinga show which stars (1. to r.) Nat Gonella, Max Bacon andElton Hayes. Max (as " Friar Tuck ") and Elton (as " Allan -

Smith stated there was somepolicy disagreement with thecompany, but that it was never-theless a wrench to sever con-nection with Columbia, bearingin mind that his associationwith them had lasted thirtyyears.

Naturally these moves haveprovoked much rumour andconjecture. Many of the Britishnames who owe their recordingfame to Smith and Newell havebeen mentioned in one quarteror another as possibly transfer-ring their allegiance to thePhillips concern.

Most of these recording starswere either on holiday or " notavailable" when contacted bythe NME on Wednesday, butsinger Teddy Johnson was mostemphatic. " No one from Phillipshas made any overtures to me,"he said, " and .anyway my Col-umbia contract has still sometime to run."BRENT WILL GO

However, it is pretty certainthat Phillips will have one bigcapture in the shape of TonyBrent, newest singing discovery,whose new Columbia issueshave received considerableacclaim from all quarters.Tony's manager told the NME:" It is very likely that Tonywill be with the new company."

Whoever does join thePhillips set-up from the Britishcatalogues will be in good com-pany, for American Columbiahas on its books such namesas Frank Sinatra, Guy Mitchell,Mitch Miller, Doris Day,Frankie LaMe, Ro sem a r yClooney, Toni Arden, Jo Staf-ford, 'Paul Weston and manyother world stars.

Tito auditions 30 Trumpets-but still can't find right one !

" y DON'T know how some people have got the nerveto come along for an audition, honestly I don't.

Half of them can't even play their instruments."It was Tito Burns speaking.

He talked to *he NME last Wed-nesday at Feldman's rehearsalrooms after the last aspirant tothe Burns trumpet chair hadbeen tried and found wanting.

" That's almost thirty of 'emI've listened to, and I stillhaven't got a trumpet player,"he went on. " Now it's a mat-ter of listening to some of theboys in the Provinces whohaven't been able to get alongtoday."

" What about ' name ' play-ers ? Haven't there been anyenquiries from that quarter ? "we asked.

" Oh yes," replied Tito, "three. or four of them. And if youprinted their names, one or twobandleaders would throw a fit!But I'll let you know who it'sgoing to be as soon as I knowmyself.

" In the meantime, AlbertHall is staying with me until Iget a replacement."

" Oh for someone to play the thing !" The Tito Burns Bandgaze soulfully at the vacant chair which a three-hour audi-

tion last Wednesday failed to fill. (See story).

BARRITEAU FROM 7 TO15 FOR GLASGOW

CARL BARRITEAU is to augment his septet to a fivesaxes, four brass and three rhythm outfit to go into

Green's Playhouse Ballroom, Glasgow, on August 25 fora three weeks' season.

Asked if this enlargement ofhis Band would be a permanentmeasure, clarinet/bandleaderCarl said : " No. I will revertto my Septet immediately afterthe Glasgow season. After all,this group has proved verysuccessful; not counting twodays for travelling time, weonly have one free date be-tween this Friday and our

widely circulating here that British bandleader RobertoInglez has already signed a contract to appear here inthe near future. (The NME of June 6 carried the storythat he had been invited to appear there).

A recent edition of " 0Mundo," one of Brazil's largestnewspapers, reported:

" Roberto Inglez will veryshortly be appearing in Rio.They are saying with greatpersistence that he will beappearing in one of the largestnight clubs in the capital, butthe question is, which one ? Wealready know that he is almostdefinitely booked to broadcastover Radio Nationale. . . ."

RIO RAVESAsked for his comments on

these reports, Roberto Ingleztold the NME in London : " I'mafraid I'm not in a position tocomment, as the matter is nowin the hands of the Savoy HotelPress Office."

When asked for their Com-

ments or a statement, a Savoyspokesman said: " I'm afraidwe can't let you have a storyyet. The photographs aren'tbeing taken until tomorrow(Thursday)."

When asked why photographswere being taken however, thePress Office was a trifle evasive;it. therefore, seems likely thatthere is more than a grain oftruth in the reports sent overby our South American corres-pondent, and it may well bethat Roberto Inglez will shortlybe missing from his customaryplace on the stand at theSavoy.

If these reports are accurate;and earlier information correct,Roberto will have an orchestrawith the same line-up as he useshere, will be appearing both on

SIX WEEKSradio and in stage appearances,and may be there for anythingup to six weeks.

Meanwhile, press reports inRio continue to give glowingreviews to Roberto's recordings.The newspaper " A Noite,"writing about Inglez, says. "Tomake a record with RobertoInglez is the greatest thing thatcould happen to a Brazilianartist, and for a composer tohave his work recorded byInglez is the greatest thing thatcould happen to anybody."

A Word toYoung MusiciansTHERE IS a most significant item in our

news -pages this week. Tito Burns an-nounced that he would hold auditions fora trumpet -player to replace Albert Hall,and no fewer than thirty instrumentaliststurned up on Wednesday afternoon to gothrough their paces. Tito and Albertlistened to them all very carefully andmost sympathetically, for they weregenuinely anxious to discover any sparkof talent that might be developed.

WHAT HAPPENED? Regretfully, they had noalternative but to agree that the standardwas not only low, but impossible! Not oneof the players came up to scratch, and thethirty auditionees were sent on their waywhile Tito and Albert shook their headsin bewilderment.

SO DO WE. It is a dreadful commentary onthe profession today that a plum berth likethis should be so difficult to fill. Trueenough, this is a bad week and all the bestplayers are out of town, but that is at bestjust an excuse. There should be enoughup-and-coming young players to fill anyjobs that are going . . . but there aren't.

THE BLUNT truth of the matter is that fartoo many youngsters today are callingthemselves musicians and consideringthemselves to belong to that highly -skilledprofession and yet their academic back-ground is nil. They can't play their in-struments properly because they've never

to be taught, and never botheredto practise. It hasn't been necessary when,aided and abetted by their innate love ofmusic, they have busked their way into theaffections of some undiscriminating fansand thought themselves geniuses. Theirknowledge of their instruments is super-ficial, yet they believe it is all -embracing.They believe, in fact, that they " know itall."

DO YOU remember the sound common-sensethat Kenny Baker talked in the recentbiography we published in these pages?He said, when asked to give advice toyoung players: " Tell 'em . . . to learn theirinstrument properly. Nowadays, not enoughtrouble or care is taken about academicplaying. There are guys in the jazz busi-ness today who don't know anything,musically speaking; how can they ever begreat jazz players if they haven't got asolid musical background to build on?You must tread the academic road if youwant to get anywhere."

TAKING HIS own advice has broughtKenny Baker to the very top of the tree.and if more young players followed hiswprds of wisdom, they might have got theTito Burns job on Wednesday! What ismore, to paraphrase Kipling, they'd " bea musician, my son !"

RUMOURS which for some time past have raged inAmsterdam and London concerning the impending

switch of the American Columbia catalogue to thePhillips Electrical organisation gained new impetus witha statement made today over the telephone to the NME'sLondon offices by a senior executive of the Dutch con-cern in Amsterdam.

This statement said that the take-over of thenew label would definitely be effective as fromJanuary 1, 1953.

This transcontinental phonecall confirmed that the initialpressings will be made in Hol-land, but that negotiations arewell advanced for this operationto take place in London even-tually.

No confirmation or denialcould be obtained of the reportthat plant recently deliveredfrom Germany to a site in thesuburbs of London was for useby the new concern.

One rumour in Amsterdamwhich has gained great promin-ence, and seems highly crediblein the eyes of well-informed ob-servers, is the report that thePhillip s' gramophone -recordbudget for the first year will be£1,000,000, on a monthly alloca-

tion of £90,000.Experts feel that this is not

an unreasonable figure in viewof the large amount of cashneeded for the production andexploitation of the AmericanColumbia label under its newcontrol.

Meanwhile, in London, theNME has received a writtenstatement from Norman Newelladvising us of the resignationfrom the Columbia company ofhimself and his immediatechief, Leonard Smith, ColumbiaArtists' Manager.

Enclosed with this announce-ment was a copy of the letterof resignation which Mr. Smithhad sent to Mr. B. Mittell ofEMI. In his letter, Leonard

THE business drawn in on the± Mecca circuit by the RayEllington Quartet has been ofsuch magnitude that the circuitbooker, Mr. Morley, has re-newed the group's contract fora further three months fromSeptember 22 to December 21.

Late this week it was knownthat a residency for the grouphad been the subject of discus-sion between the Quartet andthe Mecca management.

We gather that while the firmfavours a sojourn for the groupat a northern Palais, Ray andthe boys would much prefer tocome south ,again after theirlong provincial tour.

The northern venue underdiscussion may well be theLocarno. Liverpool, at which

the Quartet were due to appearin two weeks' time. The NMEnow understands that followinga week at the Ritz, Manchester,the group goes to the PlazaBallroom in the same city,instead of moving west toLiverpool.

This alteration in itinerarywould be in keeping with anymove to present the Ray Elling-ton Four at the Locarno forany length of time.

Additional Ellington news isthat the boys will again beappearing in the " Goon Show "series which airs again inNovember. Fans can, however,hear them earlier when theyappear in the " Forces All -StarBill " which is being recordedon August 17.

At Finsbury Park Empire this week, Ambrose is presentinga show which stars (1. to r.) Nat Gonella, Max Bacon andElton Hayes. Max (as " Friar Tuck ") and Elton (as " Allan -

However, it is pretty certainthat Phillips will have one bigcapture in the shape of TonyBrent, newest singing discovery,whose new Columbia issueshave received considerableacclaim from all quarters.Tony's manager told the NME:" It is very likely that Tonywill be with the new company."

IT'S a long jump fromsemi -pro musician with a

gig band to comedian at theWindmill. It's quite a stepfrom a junk -shop in Boltonto the stage of a West Endtheatre.

But on October 6, whenRevudeville No. 252 opens at theWindmill Theatre, musician/comedian Freddie Fox will havecompleted the double.

Twenty - seven years ago,Freddie (then 18) bought him-self a clarinet. He subsequentlyplayed it (as well as, fromtime to time, saxophone, drums,accordion and bass) with asemi -pro band, in between doingpart-time theatrical work aslime boy, call boy, and projec-tionist.

His daytime jobs over theyears have been varied andnothing if not multifarious. Inhis time he has been minerand journalist, café managerand commercial traveller. Hehas been to sea as a sailor, andflown as a Flying Officer in theRAF.

But all the time, Freddie hashad one ambition : to have hisown musical comedy stage act.

A few years ago, Freddie tookover the running of a junk shopin Bolton, and at last had timeto get down to the planning ofthe comedy act he had long hadin mind.

Now he has a chance to makea name for himself on the stagewhere Richard Murdoch. EricBarker, Bill Kerr, Michael Ben -tine, Diana Decker and manyothers did just that. October 6can be a big day for FreddieFox.

Drogheda, Eire, for aholiday with his mother, 53 -year -old Peter Moran, well-known East Lancashiremulti - instrumentalist, ofLeamington Road, Black-burn, was taken ill andrushed to hospital where hedied on Monday (August 4).

CORNERMANMr. Moran, an official of the

Blackburn branch of the MU.came to Blackburn about 30years ago. He saw service withmany noted Northern bands andhad played probably in everytown in the county.

Primarily he became famousfor his brass band work astrombonist but he subsequentlyadopted saxophone and clarinetand, a few years ago, became acornerman in Eddie McGarry'sOrchestra with whom, until lastOctober, he played alongsidehis son.

ment from the DudleyHippodrome is that theautumn series of SundayConcerts will be held fortnightly instead of weekly aswas the custom last year.

Vie Lewis opens the season onAugust 31, being followed byJack Parnell the following week,and then name -bands eachalternate Sunday. No small jazzgroups are to be featured.

On Sunday, September 28,Dick Haymes will play an after-noon Concert accompanied byArthur Rowberry and his Or-chestra.

The concerts are beingpresented by John Gordon inassociation with Bob andMaurice Kennedy, joint manag-ing directors of the theatre.

John Gordon is also presenting Cyril Stapleton at Wednes-bury Horticultural Show onSaturday, August 16. This willprobably be the last appearancethe Stapleton Band will makein the Black Country beforedisbanding.

Brian Pearsall, who is con-tracted to Gordon for ten years,is currently appearing at theMusic Hall, Shrewsbury, butwill return to the Adelphi, WestBromwich, in September.

FREELANCE drummer GeorgeCurtis, last week at Sea -

view, IOW, with Laurie Payne'sMelachrino Quartet, comes totown this week to dep forGeorge Fierstone with WoolfPhillips' Skyrockets Orchestra,at the Palladium.

On Saturday, August 9, hisdaughter Vicky is gettingmarried at St. Alban's Abbey at2.30; with a first house to playat 6.30, George doesn't look likehaving much time to toast thehappy couple.

SANDOWN, I.O.W.-Four ex-Gonella sidemen, under thejoint leadership of bassist/vocalist Roy Dexter and drum-mer Les Jessup, are currentlyplaying their third consecutiveseason at the SandringhamHotel here. Playing in the Pavilion'sPopular Restaurant is a triocomprising " Sandy " Sander-son (piano -leader), Eric Ellis(alto -clarinet) and Bill Sykes(drums).

Haydn Powell conducts thePavilion ballroom band and theother group is drawing thecrowds to the pier for dancing.

This latter outfit recently lostleader Alan Levett who left togo to Nairobi. Tenor -clarinetman, Al Smith, took over asleader while Douggie Leatherbyhas taken over the piano chairfrom Doug Campbell.

In addition to these -.activitiesthere is a group playing in themornings during August in theballroom. After an 18 -monthlay-off, conductor Powell hastaken up his trumpet to frontthis combination which consistsof Hammond organ, piano, bassand drums.

Norfolk Hotel leader, IvorRaymonde, fronts a trio for abroadcast accompanying job in"Variety Roadhouse" on August24.

This is a new venture for Ivorbut it will in no way affect hisnormal broadcasts with his sex-tet. or his work at the Norfolk.

On Sunday, bassist TeddyWadmore was unable to singwith leader Raymonde in their" boy -girl " version of " A Guyis a Guy," so the latter amusedthe hotel patrons by singingboth " parts " - complete withchange of " costume."

"FIRST British show ever tocross the Arctic Circle "

is the claim of the Royal KiltieJuniors, the young troupe ofmusical boys and girls who, arenow touring Sweden, and whoplayed a show in Kiruna. Lapp -land recently. The group thenmoved south to play towns insouthern Sweden, and will betouring Denmark during August.

POLICE were called out inDublin last Friday to con-

trol the thousands of teen-agedancing fans clamouring foradmission to strike -bound ball-rooms.

Six Grade B dance halls inDublin h a d pickets outsidetheir doors following the ex-piration of the period given bythe Irish Federation of Musi-cians to the Ballroom Proprie-tors' Association to meet ademand for increased wagesranging from 7s. 6d. to lls. 3d.per hour for Federationmusicians.

In some ballrooms the ownerstried to carry on with the aidof records played over a publicaddress system.

... And down theGlasgow streetscame Dr. CrockGLASGOW citizens, proceed-

ing about their lawfuloccasions, got quite a shock lastTuesday morning when, to theaccompaniment of drums,and a trumpet or two. Dr.Crock, his Crackpots andseveral policemen came march-ing down to the city's busyRenfield Street - SauchiehallStreet crossing.

The parade wended its wayfrom Green's Playhouse Ball-room, where the Band iscurrently appearing, throughthe centre of the city to St.George's Road, a distance ofabout two miles.

Waiting there were the staffof Kendal's Shirt Shop, onwhom Dr. Crock and his Crack-pots were paying a ratherpublic call.

The whole business providedquite a bit of fun for thecitizens of the Scottish city andattracted a tremendous amountof publicity for the Band.

With these oft - quotedwords, Bing Crosby suc-cinctly summed up the waymost people in popularmusic feel about a wonder-ful performer.

Since she first hit the head-lines in 1938 with "A-Tisket A-Tasket," her own reworking ofa toddlers' tune, Ella Fitzgeraldhas gone just about as far asanyone can go, aestheticallyspeaking, starting out as anenthusiastic kid with a naturalflair for swing singing, andfinally reaching the stage where" Down Beat's" Mike Levin hadno hesitation in calling her" The first complete artist thatjazz has produced."

At first, everything that Elladid was cast in the same lightlyrhythmic mould. Today her ver-satility seems limitless, embrac-ing everything from blues toballads, calypso to mimicry and,for good measure, a style ofscatting that is unmatched inaccuracy and control.

Thrilling SagaHer career has taken her

from ballroom and vaudevillestage to the world's leadingconcert halls, with innumer-able radio, recording and TVdates along the way, and shehas sung in a dozen countriesthroughout the continents ofAmerica and Europe.

According to her official pub-licity release, the Fitzgeraldstory is " One of the mostthrilling sagas in show busi-ness," and this is not so farfrom the truth.

Born in Newport News, Vir-ginia, Ella lost her parentswhen she was a tiny tot, andmost of her childhood was spentat the Riverdale Orphanage,New York City.

One day she went along to theApollo Theatre to compete inthe weekly amateur contest,and her version of Hoagy Car-michael's " Judy " won her firstprize, and a seven-day engage-ment at the theatre.

Contrary to general belief,maestro Chick Webb did NOT

After Webb died, in the sum-mer of 1939. Ella picked up the

contact with members of thebop movement, and it was ona variety tour with Dizzy thatshe evolved her unforgettablevariations on the theme of" Lady Be Good" which shelater sang at the London Pal-ladium.

Within two years, her famewas widespread enough for herto win the International Girl

"Despite all the things I'vedone, I still consider myself aballad singer " she admits, "AndI suppose I'll always be thatway. I love ballads; despitewhat they say, that will neverchange."

In view of her strugglingchildhood, Ella's interest inaiding orphaned children isreadily understandable. In 1945she was elected to the Inter-national Committee of the Fos-ter Parents' Plan For WorldChildren, serving with suchwomen as Mrs. Harry S.Truman and Mrs. EleanorRoosevelt.

She continues to devote muchof her time on behalf of home-less youngsters, both in Americaand abroad.

During the seventeen yearsshe has been recording, therehave been so many magnificentFitzgerald issues, most of themcurrently obtainable here, thata representative short selectionis hard to make. "Black Coffee,""A Man Wrote Song," " HowHigh the Moon," " Talk Fast,My Heart," " Basin StreetBlues " and the various duetswith Louis. Armstrong barelybegin to scratch the surface.

PerfectIn fact, play any one of her

sides, and the odds are infavour of you hearing a well-nigh perfect example of peer-less artistry.

In the words of her impre-sario, Norman Granz: " EllaFitzgerald reigns today, un-challenged, as the championgirl singer of our time." Therecan be very few knowledgeablepeople who would contest thisstatement.

The Blues Jubilee has been asolid sell-out for three yearsnow. T -Bone Walker andJimmy Witherspoon put on aduel that left the fans limp.Helen Humes, Al Hibbler, JayMcNeely and his Orchestra andPeppermint Harris had the fansjumping for two solid hours....

Billy Gray, Patti Moore andBen Liessy are entertaining thepatrons at the Band Box. . . .

Ray Anthony, currently at thePalladium in Hollywood, justbought himself a $40,000 hillsidehome. . . . Louis Jordan openedat the Tiffany Club. And thejoint is jumping.

A new night club. the Cres-cendo, operated by Harry Stein-man (husband of Fran Warren,

and Billy Eckstine's manager)is having trouble with theunions. Ella Mae Morse, PatMorrissey and Champ Butlerhad to wait for their money.

Nat King Cole is appearingthere, but with the stipulationthat he be paid at the end ofeach evening's performance. Wesat on this story for a fewweeks because it was our inten-tion of giving the Crescendoevery opportunity to straightenitself out.

Even though this would havebeen published 6,000 milesaway, a telephone call fromoverseas to the right people.would have closed the placedown with a bang. But thestory is out. . . .

Winifred and Dolores Oakley 'Share the Bulls -eye, too !

T N the London Palladium's1 star-studded bill, whichopened this week, there aretwo very talented ladies -Dolores Gray and WinifredAtwell.

Dolores couldn't get awaywith it fully until she resortedto her " Annie " costume and arifle, whereas Winifred, appear-ing for the first time at thePalladium, not only got awaywith it with the help of a pianobut had the audience yelling,

whistling, clapping for more,and more-and more.

Atwell's brand of piano -fire-works is so well-known to allthrough her big -selling record-ings that all one can say of herappearance in variety is that(a) she plays the piano exactlyas always, and as brilliantly;(b) she has been clever enoughto evolve a little stage presen-tation around her; and (c) she" threw " everybody (certainlythe national paper critics !) byplaying Greig's Piano Concertoin the midst of " Cross Hands

The NME photographer was in Winifred Atwell's dressingroom to wish her luck, just before the opening show, andcaught Ivor Mairants doing the same thing. He accompanies

Dolores Gray, I think, is agreat stage artist, and Ithoroughly enjoyed seeing her.Nevertheless, I heaved a sigh ofrelief and thankfully uncrossedmy crossed fingers when sheslipped out of the very prettyevening gown, and the lovesongs, into Annie Oakley and" Doin' What Comes Naturally "et al.

I liked the way she fastenedon to the current vogue forartists casually to " slip in " thefact that, by sheer chance, theirnext number was recorded on" such -and -such " label, and sonicely referred to her own thatI would have bought a recordright there and then if anyonelad come round selling !

I was rather tickled to noticethat, of all people on the bill,Winifred Atwell was by far thebiggest recording personality-so she didn't mention herrecords or label!

The entire bill for this weekand next is excellent, and inLeslie Randall, a young manwhose medium so far has beentelevision, I feel we have a newcomic of some import, whoshould quickly be doing ex-tremely well for himself.

His act was clean, clever andfunny. His gags with cigarettes(particularly the early -morningsmoker) had the biggest laughof the evening; I think we shallsee Mr. Randall often at theArgyle Street Auditorium.Yes, a first-class bill-Carsony

IF you want to know how theseboys have come on, listen to

this one. Without wishing toprecipitate a minor civil com-motion, it must be fairly statedthat the Christies phow whatthe Manchester lads lack-relaxation.

Admittedly, the styles aredifferent. The Christies emulatea New Orleans Negro band,and in some measure theysucceed - though mercifullyeliminating the bum notes andthe tired phrases that too oftengo with it.ENSEMBLE

Most important, they'velearned the knack of sitting onthe beat instead of pushing it.They don't wildly pursue themelody, rather let it overtakethem, and, having got it wherethey want it, close in for aclimax.

The way they open each side,they could almost be commenc-ing the first set at the LondonJazz Club with a whole eveningbefore them. Dickie Hawdenhas developed a fine, hot tone,and leads away confidently in" You Always Hurt," later to bejoined by the brothers. Thethree play together to themanner born, complementingone another's lines of thoughtand placing notes just wherethey're most needed in theensemble.

IMPROVED RHYTHM" I'm So Glad " is a spiritual -

style number that the LytteltonBand used to feature a year orso ago. If it sounds more thana little like " Gimme CrackCorn," it probably indicateswhence the latter tune came.This side, too, goes with a solidswing, notable for two fineclarinet choruses from Ian andsome extra -glorious trombonefrom Keith.

If the Christies' last recordwas good, this one is better, dueto the improved rhythm section.However, the engineer seems tohave taken fright at the end ofthe second side. There's anoticeable volume fade. Onecan't altogether blame him, foronce started the Christies'sound as if they'll go on for-ever !

OK"' the lesson has beenlearned - simply not to

advocate the return of a newrecording band quite so hastilyin future. It was never sus-pected that the Saints would beback before you could say"Jelly Roll Morton " with any-thing quite so outrageous as thistreatment of "Milenberg Joys."

Someone asked in all serious-ness if it was meant to be funny.Alas, it isn't. Put it down toover -enthusiasm for Jelly's tuneif you like.

At best, the out-of-tuneness,the squeaky clarinet, the zanytrumpet, and the laughter -cry-ing trombone only manage tosound like jazzmen trying to bejolly with their tongues in theircheeks.

Fortunately, " Tiger Rag " isbetter. Alan Radcliffe againsteals the show with his varia-tions on the clarinet licksimmortalised by Larry Shieldswith the Original DixielandJazz Band.

The rest of the boys chase the" Tiger " so hard, it's a wonderthey don't knock themselvesout. When will it be realisedthat jazz isn't just a matter ofmaking noise with a beat ?

Mulligan and 'Keir meetup again at Carlisle

THEREwill be a big re -union

at Market Hall, Carlisle,on Saturday, August 9, whenMick Mulligan's Magnolia JazzBand join forces with DaveKeir and the Nova Scotia JazzBand to present a traditionalistconcert.

The Dave Keir Band, by theway, will be presented at theconcert by David Mylne, Scot-tish area representative of theNFJO.

LOOSE ENDLast April, Archie Semple's

Capital Jazzmen were on tourwhen they ran across the Mul-ligan boys. Mick liked thesounds that came from Archie'sclarinet and Pat Malloy's bass,offered them a job and wasaccepted.

Which left the Capital Jazz-men rather at a loose end. ButDave Keir (who handles altosax, violin, clarinet and pianobut settles for playing trombonewith the band) decided thatsome re -organisation wasneeded.

What was left of the CapitalJazzmen was augmented andthe result was Dave Keir andthe Nova Scotia Jazz Band.

THE Jazz Record Retailers'Association has recently

been holding a trade war onunsatisfactory dubbings issuedby some of the British labels,large and small.

Vogue's recent issue of a JellyRoll Morton coupling from thefamous General album of pianosolos has been the cause of aspot of argument. Vogue chiefDoug Whitton, states that hiscompany maintains a policy ofpressing from masters only andthat the or i g in a 1 Generalmasters in the States were notperfect.

The JRRA, it appears, madedubbings from brand newAmerican pressings with betterresults. Any comments ?

advise readers that the NFJOCentral Offices at 18, Timber -croft Lane, Plumstead, S.E.18(Telephone WOOlwich 4492),which was closed for a fort-night, will re -open on Mondaynext, 11th. James, his wife andJRRA secretary Owen Brycehave been touring the West,Country in a caravan.

Everywhere I've been in yourcountry it's jazz, jazz all theway.

The way things are stacking -up jazz is surely going to havea big impact on variety. Hell,the next thing you know, jug-glers will have to do their actwith a jazz beat and shuffle.

Something else again-I justdidn't realise the kind of bandsyou've got over here. TakeFreddy Randall. Apart fromsolo work, I've done my act outfront of this group and themusic is as solid as a beertruck. Mr. Freddy blows somereally torrid trumpet and thewhole bunch are really in there.

earful of another GeorgeShearing. Guy named JoeSaye. What a piano -playerthat boy is !

I've heard jazz over here thatwould surprise the folks backhome. They just don't knowwhat's going on in this littleisland.

I got a little homesick whenI first came over-but, believeme, I soon lost that old feelingwhen I met all the real friendli-ness and tremendous interest injazz that I've encounteredeverywhere I've been.

I'm gonna sit right down andwrite a letter about it all toW. C. Handy, the old daddy ofthe blues, in New York. He's76 now and he can't see no more-but he knows 'most every-thing about jazz and I knowhe'll be fascinated to hear howthings are over here when theyread my letter to him.

When I first latched -on tohow all the kids here feel aboutjazz I was staggered. One ofthe shocks I got was when Iplayed Leeds. After the showthe manager of the theatre said:" There's 200 young people out-side."

Old Discs" Yeah," I said nervously :

" What do they want ?"" You !" he told me. " But

You don't have to worry-theyjust want to shake hands andtalk about some records youonce made."

Those old platters! The kidswere firing questions at meabout the "Yellow Dog Blues,""Yes, suh!", "Margie" and those"Mean Old Bedbug Blues."Tell you sump'n-I hadn't evengot a copy of " Ye/low Dog "myself, and when I tried to buyone in Hull the man in the shopsaid he didn't have one left.

" Liza " swings all the way, with Ronnie (" Mr. Up-right ") Ball playing the best solo he's ever recorded.Agreed, Bud Powell's style had quite an influence overRon at this stage of his development (when these sideswere made), and there are also traces of Tristan, butwhat the heck !.. Ronnie plays fine piano !

Kinsey's kicking brushwork is excellent ; and PeteBlannin proves he was the ideal bassist for the Trio.

" Excavation " adds Victor Feldman's vibes. It's a verypretty original with infectious changes by Vic and clari-nettist brother Bob. In conception, it reminds us of Getz's" Standanavian " (originally a Swedish folk -song). Victakes it at the same leisurely tempo as his " Serenity "on Melodist (reviewed here June 20, 1952), and for thefirst time on record shows up as the relaxed creativeyoung genius we all know him to be.

Ronnie takes a gem of a 16 -bar solo in the secondchorus, playing a sympathetic line with a simplicityreminiscent of John Lewis. The over -long " nothinghappens" coda robs us of at least half a solo chorusThis side's not too well recorded, and the rather heavyoff -beat tends towards thumpiness.

VERDICT. Two more sides - good, though not thegreatest-to help British jazz rid itself of its inferioritycomplex.

RESOLUTION. Next time we have a home-grownoutfit as good as this one was, let's give it the publicityand praise it deserves at the time-and not wait till afterit's extinct.

ACCORDION BOOMIN MIDLANDS

ALL over the Midlands the demand for accordionplayers is booming and many accordion bands are

being formed on a semi -pro basis. Dance bands witha strong accordion flavour are hitting a new popularityhigh in this area, and requests for tuition are so greatthat teachers cannot keep pace with them.

At the Jack Woodroffe Schoolof Music, 89 Broad Street, Birm-ingham, accordion expert PercyBarratt, told me : " The everincreasing demand for accordiontuition is almost unbelievable.So good is it at this school thatwe urgently require additionalstaff for accordion teaching."

He added : " Many of thosewho come to me for tuition aremusicians who intend to joinbands now being formed. Anumber of new all -accordionbands will be appearing withinthe next twelve months. Suchbands are in big demand, especi-ally at club dances and privatefunctions."

At this school a whole suite ofstudios is now devoted to accor-dion development.

Indicative of the boom is thefact that on September 13 at theFriends' Institute, Birmingham,accordion contests and a musicalconcert will be held on a scalenot attempted since 1938.

On this night, after the Mid-land Area Accordion contests,chief attraction at the concertwill be the West Burton Accor-dion Orchestra, All - Englandchampions for 1951.

Organiser of the event is Mr.Barratt, member of the advisorycommittee of the NationalAccordion Organisation.

" Box Biographies"BRIAN DEXTER

nNE of the younger genera-tion`-' of session accordion-

ists, Brian Dexter has a firmfoundation in music in hisstudies on pianoforte at theLondon Musical College underWilfred Davies.

Like many other accordion-ists, Brian just " took up " theaccordion, but three years onchurch organ had fitted himfor proficiency in handlingthis type of reed -sounding in-strument. At fifteen he wasalready a very handy perfor-mer on accordion, and by thetime war broke out was justgetting in nicely with theTown gig circles.

Military service in the Re-connaissance Corps was fol-lowed by a more pleasantspell as a fully-fledged mem-ber of the Royal Scots GreysMilitary Band under Band-master C. A. Holt. In thisband Brian had to take up aproper military band instru-ment, and he put in a lot oftime and careful study onclarinet, to become a veryfair performer after demob.

He enjoyed a successful spellat the Savoy with the DannyLevan Quartet. Also broad-cast with Danny in " TheStrollers," and " Rhythm Ren-dezvous " during whichBrian's accordion became alistening must for accordion-ists.

Now a key man in Westernmusic, Brian airs in " Riders

of the Range " and " SquareDance Revels," records withDanny Levan as one of the" Red River Boys," and the" Tennessee Rakes." Still gig-ging around Town Brian isable to show another facet ofhis abilities as a very modernpianist. Brian is married andhas a son.
