28 AND SHE DREW IT IN A NUTSHELL: The Art of Bernadette Solina-Wolf

South Luzon Association of Museums (SLAM) and NHCP

This exhibit is going to be a visual discourse on the diversity of Filipino culture. Against a very unconventional canvas, Wolf will draw fragments of Filipino life. The exhibit will deal with two opposite ends of our cultural milieu, the indigenous and what became the Filipino life as a colony. Transforming the utilitarian coconut into fine art makes Bernadette Solina-Wolf’s works distinctive. An artist by profession, she started painting on coconut shell in 2006 as a consignee at the Ayala Museum. A collaborative work with his husband, a German Engineer, she has to this date created 1, 200 paintings that uses German technology to sustain her art in her chosen medium, the bao.

However, the most of these people are already displaced and have migrated to various landlocked provinces in the Philippines. Such displacement contribute to cultural degradation. artworks to be produced will serve as interlocutor of signs of the new influences in the constant shifting of language, such as emergent subcultures, gender expansion, topographies, class consciousness, etc. As image-makers, the artists’ task is to draw on their intrinsic ability to manipulate what they see into being imageries of what they are, in the context of what they may mean. The exhibition would also like to stimulate the artists to present photographs in a trandisciplinal mode to highlight the medium’s ephemeral nature and fluctuating role as source of information.
