WELCOME TO THE MUSEUM OF NORTHWEST ART’S CELEBRATION IN THE VALLEY
The Board of Trustees and Staff of the Museum of Northwest Art welcome you to the 27th Annual Art Auction. It is a time to celebrate achievements of the past and the bright future of MoNA. Without mem-bers, donors, patrons, volunteers and artists we could not accomplish our mission of creating exciting and informative visual exhibitions as well as diverse educational programs.2018 was a time of remembering and paying tribute to the past while building a strong future for the Museum. 2019 is a year to further our progress towards financial sustainability and to enhance cultural diver-sity in our programming; these will help to build a strong future for MoNA.Through your generous support, the Education Department continues our commitment to MoNA Link’s salient goal of creating a legacy of teachers who apply what was learned in this program for many years to come. 2019 also celebrates partnerships with new organizations such as ArtsWA’s HeART work initiative providing diversity training, and Humanities Washington’s Speakers Bureau presenting informative talks by an array of speakers such as Carlos Gil who recently presented ‘From Mexican to Mexican American.’ This summer brings art classes, an art and science camp, and a new music series. The exhibitions are filled with works from our permanent collection curated by Executive Director Emeritus Susan Parke, which are followed by the colorful but never before exhibited paintings of Joan Kirkman, and then a very personal exhibition of Eve Deisher’s work curated by Lanny Bergner, and finally, Especially Special: A Celebration of Betty Black and Her Collection of Art, curated by Kathleen Moles.Thank you for joining us under the tent to once again celebrate our wonderful Museum and for helping to assure MoNA’s strong future which is ever so dependent upon the generosity of donors. We look forward to seeing you at our exhibitions, programs, and classes, and enjoying our re-designed Museum Store featuring the creative and lovely work of artists and artisans in our community. Everything here is powered by your support, and for that we are grateful.

On June 22nd MoNA presents the creative world of Joan Kirkman. Joan was a leading fashion illus-trator for Frederick & Nelson, The Bon Marche, I. Magnin, and Best Apparel (formally Nordstrom). Throughout her 40-year career as a successful illustrator, less known is that Joan was a gifted and accomplished oil and watercolor painter influ-enced by Post-Impressionists. As a member of the Art Departments at the University of Washington and Western Washington University she influ-enced many students. MoNA is honored to share the art of Joan Kirkman.

2019 TRUSTEES'AWARD RECIPIENT
GARRY CLINE Hardworking, longtime MoNA volunteer Garry Cline was announced at the Annual Meeting as the Recipient of the 2019 Trustees' Award for exceptional and long-standing support of the museum. The award was presented to him at the Volunteer Appreciation Reception. Garry's MoNA connections go back to his friendship with Rita Hupy and his deep admiration for Susan Parke during her tenure, when he himself was director of the Anacortes Museum. Garry’s nomination was strongly endorsed by the Staff, who praise Garry for the many mainte-nance needs that he takes care of. To name a few: replacing toilet seats, switching out lights, monitoring the water suppres-sion system, fixing busted cabinets in the store, mending broken door hinges, creating and installing elegant coat hooks for the staff, helping with the Art Studio’s recent renovations by build-ing shelving and installing a paper towel rack and hooks for art smocks...as well as serving on the art installation crew, and stuffing envelopes for mailings. Needless to say, MoNA would not be MoNA without Garry Cline. For all he does, MoNA is extremely grateful.

PHILANTHROPY AWARDELIZABETH TAPPER
La Conner artist and master printmaker Elizabeth Tapper is a longtime close friend of MoNA, going back to 2008, when she arranged with then-Executive Director Greg Robinson to donate more than one artwork to the auction. The relationship with the museum blossomed as Tapper established a tradition of generously donating several treasured pieces of various NW artists to the auction every year, including 21 pieces this year. Her donated art over time runs to well over 100 pieces.Elizabeth Tapper attended graduate school at Columbia University, and studied with George Tsutakawa and Kathleen Rabel in Seattle. She has specialized in the plate-making and editioning of intaglio prints in her independent studio since 1981, and her many artist collaborations have taken her all over the U.S., as well as to Sweden, Germany, and Australia. Her collaborative works are collected by Harvard’s Fogg Museum, Boston Library, Museum of Modern Art, Seattle Art Museum, Microsoft, Pilchuck, and MoNA. She was instrumental in creating the print program and print shop at Pilchuck, and was appointed Master Printer there in 1990. Her own work has been shown at Seattle Art Museum, Frye Art Museum, Honolulu Academy of Art, Whatcom Museum, and University of Newcastle, Australia. With her beautiful artwork donations annually generating valuable support for the museum, MoNA is extremely fortunate to be the longtime beneficiary of Elizabeth Tapper’s generous spirit, and is honored to present to her the 2019 MoNA Philanthropy Award.
