Recent Musings: Letter from the Curator-Manager

Kathryn JamiesonAfter a year and a half as a Director and three years as a volunteer, Kurt Johnson has resigned from the Goulbourn Museum Board of Directors. Kurt was involved in several research projects for exhibition and publication, he provided a travelling lecture series on behalf of the Museum, and he has been a great resource for connecting the Museum with other organizations. I’d like to thank Kurt for his contributions, and wish him all the best in his next adventure.

The Goulbourn Museum’s artefact collection has grown exponentially in the last few months as we welcomed three incredible collections connected to the Richmond area. In August we received overwhelming support in our bid to bring Richmond native Clarence Evelyn Rielly’s war medals home. Thanks to your generous donations, the Museum was able to purchase and care for this collection of WWI and WWII medals, pins and photographs. On the heels of this excitement, we also welcomed Colonel George Thew Burke’s Medal of Recognition for service in the War of 1812’s Battle of Chateauguay. The medal was issued in 1848 and was accompanied by a letter written by Burke’s daughter in 1889. More recently, Paul Thibaudeau, PhD, donated a collection of roughly 40,000 artefacts. He and his team completed an archeological dig in Richmond and through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, donated the entire collection and documentation to the Museum.

This fall we have Katrina Mulholland on site completing her high school co-op placement with us. Katrina is taking this opportunity to delve into several areas of museum work and will primarily focus on collections management. Over the summer we were lucky to have three students at the Museum: Sarah Norton, Jennifer Adams and Stephanie Miles. All three left their mark and we miss them already. They are sure to have promising careers.

I am happy to announce that thanks to the City of Ottawa, we have brand new software for maintaining our artefact database. Currently, an enthusiastic team of volunteers is combing through our collection and adding data to our records. In 2014, we will start uploading our records to an online portal - stay tuned!

I look forward to seeing you at the Museum.

This c. 1920s cloche styled hat was the talk of the International Women’s Club of Ottawa during the Museum’s recent History of the Hat presentation.

Cloche hats are fitted, bell-shaped hats that were a staple during the 1920s. The hat gains its name from the French word cloche which means bell. These hats were first made of felt so that they would better form to the shape of the wearer’s head but soon all types of materials were used to create these cloche designs.

Your cloche hat could have been customized by adding ribbons around the crown. Cloche hats could also be decorated to tell the public a little more about the wearer including an arrow shaped ribbon which indicated a girl was single but had given her heart to someone, a firm knot signaled her marriage, and a flamboyant bow indicated the wearer was single and ready to mingle.

The cloche hat remained a prevalent style into early 1930s until it became obsolete around 1933.

Education & Community Programmer

Tracey DonaldsonThe Museum is happy to present a new exhibit in our Community Corners Cabinet. The Calligraphy Society of Ottawa has set up a wonderful display featuring beautiful examples of their work. What’s

fascinating to note is that members of the society are responsible for maintaining the names in Canada’s Books of Remembrance. These books lie in the Memorial Chamber of the peace tower and honour the sacrifice of over 118,000 Canadians. Be sure to stop in before the end of January and take a look.

Marketing & Visitor Services

Sue WoodfordI had fun drawing on my photojournalism background to shoot the gems of Goulbourn for a 2014 fundraising calendar. I enjoyed meandering along the back roads on my location scout and I

spent several evenings chasing sunsets, but that shot evaded me in the end. Tracey’s expertise designing exhibits is evident in the beautiful job she did arranging artefacts for the staged photos and Sarah can now call herself a “pin-up girl” as she posed ever-so-patiently in period costume while I photographed her at the Ashton General Store. The calendars sell for $10 each and are available in the Museum’s gift shop and at the Ashton General Store. They make a great Christmas gift and are a wonderful way to support the Museum!

Curatorial Assistant

Sarah RathwellTo celebrate Thanksgiving the Museum was invited by the International Women’s Club of Ottawa to speak about the origins of the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday. Dressed in our finest skirts

and hats from 1910, we invited the group of dignitaries, ambassador’s wives and international ladies to try on a period costume themselves while we presented a history of hats with examples from the Museum’s artefact collection.

Although fall is my favourite time of the year the festive season is always next in line. I look forward to sharing a newly updated holiday Village Store with you and jolly ol’ Saint Nick at our Old-Fashioned Christmas on Sunday, December 1st from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hope to see you there!
