Chase away the winter blahs and participate in dinosaur related activities for all age levels. Activities include assembling large wooden dinosaur skeletons, excavating bones and assembling them, dinosaur floor puzzles and scavenger hunt. “Rock & Mineral Identification”Geologist Sara Johnson presents an introduction to rocks and minerals. Learn how to make a basic mineral test kit. Hands on identification procedures include observation skills and hardness tests. Great for teachers and rockhounds, this program qualifies for a Boy & Girl Scout merit badges. CAll FoR ARTISTS! To promote artists working in stone the New Rock & Mineral Experience will feature an ongoing display of original art work every 3 months beginning April 3, 2012. Interested artists can submit the following for consideration:

Email or mail non-returnable photos of up to six proposed pieces for exhibit to the Museum. Do not send actual artwork. Artists will be chosen and notified for an exhibit.

A brief biography and description of artwork including measurements.

All submitted work must be made of stone or feature stone as a prominent component of the work. This includes but is not limited to: jewelry, engraving, carving, sculpture, and mosaic.

The criteria for chosen artwork is based on originality, craftsmanship and material.

Artists will be featured for a maximum of 3 months. Please see the Museum website for further details. This exhibit is made possible by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

ExPERIENcE

A selection of pyritized fossils from Bundenbach, are on permanent display. Illinois paleo-artist, Rob Sula was commissioned to do this painting of a 400 million year old Devonian Sea Floor featuring a visual representation of each fossil on display.

Learn where collectable Illinois fossils & minerals are found through a push-button exhibit of the state counties.

A special thanks to our Museum Members’ contributions to this project. The photos on both the front and back of the intro island were taken courtesy of the National Park Service at the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. “The Rock & Mineral Experience” permanent exhibit was funded in part by the “Public Museum Capital Grant Program” Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Illinois State Museum.

Ammolite is the gem trade name for a rare form of iridescent ammonite found in Canada. This large specimen was donated to the Museum in 2011.

After 2 years of planning and 6 months of renovating the new permanent exhibit hall in the lower level of the Museum is open to the public. The multipurpose space serves as the Museum’s lecture hall, classroom area and features 26 new exhibits.

A totally new experience! Learn how a tree turns to stone, how hard jade is, what minerals make-up granite, and see fossils through geologic time. Exhibits include international agates, jasper, lapidary materials and outstanding minerals. Touch a meteorite or touch a screen to view short videos on jade carving, cabochon cutting, faceting and an introduction to the Museum exhibits. Interact with the Illinois map and fluorescent mine along with hands on specimens.
