Museums + GalleriesWoven into our cultural fabric, museums cultivate meaningful discussions about our past and present, helping us understand our collective heritage. DLR Group offers a unique, multi-disciplinary practice model with specialists in engineered environmental control, specialty lighting, and technology–an approach that has produced projects nationally recognized for their technical, aesthetic, and operational quality. Our designers guide clients through every phase of a project, creating compelling solutions that reflect the unique values and identity of a museum facility.

DLR Group’s Cultural+Performing Arts portfolio includes 40+ museum and gallery projects. Of varying scales and contexts from urban to rural, our projects encompass traditional object-based gallery spaces as well as experiential museums and interpretive centers involving interactive exhibits and technology-rich environments.

We have designed projects of all budgets from $100,000 to more than $100 million in construction costs and of all levels of complexity from ground up new construction to adaptive re-use of historic structures to interior renovations and graphic program upgrades.

We have direct experience with typical museum program elements including exhibit space, retail, food service, archives, special events, and curatorial support spaces such as storage and conservation labs. Having worked closely with exhibit designers and fabricators, we understand how the technology and exhibit requirements of today’s interpretive environments may impact architectural form.

DLR Group understands this building type, inside and out–from planning for flexible exhibit spaces and climate control systems that protect valuable collections to creating a compelling image that reflects a client’s values and is also economically feasible.

DLR Group’s Innovative Technology Design Group (ITDG) offers a variety of specialty design services that are vital to the success of technology-immersive projects. ITDG provides project-tailored expertise in implementing new technology strategies, improving or complementing existing technology, and/or replacing aging systems.

Today’s museums integrate a variety of media—film, interactives, sound recordings, print, objects—and theatrical elements to engage visitors and tell a particular story. Museums also contain many specialized spaces, such as presentation/lecture rooms, special exhibit spaces and galleries, and lobbies and assembly spaces—all of which have different audiovisual, lighting, and acoustical needs.

Our technology specialists collaborate with the firm’s architects and engineers as well as other disciplines, such as exhibit designers, from the earliest project phases so that these myriad issues are considered in the overall architectural and engineering design.

Key technology considerations for museums include:

Acoustics Museums are rife with acoustic challenges. The need for quality acoustical design increases with a higher finish level as typically found in museums. The room configurations and finishes need to be developed together to ensure the right sound reverberation control.

Lighting Design Precise and adjustable lighting is a key system within the museum environment. Different object sizes and distances from lighting sources require a high level of adjustability in the lighting. The use of traditional halogen lighting to achieve this flexibility is no longer relevant due to increasing power consumption, cooling loads, and difficulty in maintenance. DLR Group’s lighting designers have been recognized for our work designing state-of-the-art all LED lighting.systems for the museum environment.

One of the most pressing challenges in the century is to mitigate climate change caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities. Information in this report has been extracted from the estimated operational energy consumption, energy production, and energy optimization of DLR Group designs in 2018. Beyond these typical metrics of achievement, in 2018 we addressed other areas including exploration of innovative materials, indoor air quality, occupant comfort, wellbeing and productivity. These areas further expanded our thinking on sustainability and the role it plays within integrated design.

Raise the Bar DLR Group’s average reduction target of predicted energy use for our high-performance designs has consistently exceeded the national peer group average. In 2018, our integrated designs resulted in a 49 percent energy reduction for all DLR Group 2030 Challenge tracked projects.* While an improvement over the previous year, we are continuing to set aggressive internal targets and widen our performance design approach to reach our goal of meeting the 2030 Challenge on every new project by 2020.

SUSTAINABILITYMeeting the Challenge

*Reduction determined using The Zero Tool, an Architecture 2030 platform developed for building sector professionals to establish energy reduction baselines and targets, compare a building’s energy performance with similar buildings and to codes, and understand how a building achieved its current energy performance.
