Winston Churchill’s Speech

On March 5th, 1946, in Fulton Missouri, President Truman let the prime minister of Britain make a speech to the American people. This speech was designed to make the American people take a firm stance toward the Soviets. The speech outlined that in order to stop the Soviets, and the spread of communism, the allies had to stick together. And the American people listened, they became determined to stop the Soviets and the spread of communism. The speech did exactly what Churchill wanted, it convinced the Americans that if they joined together and became allies with Britain, they could stop the Soviets.

Iron Curtain Map

In the picture on the right, everything to the left of the line is NATO and everything to the right belongs to the Warsaw Pact. The Soviet Union installed communist governments in all the countries in east Europe so that they could create a buffer zone between them and the west. They were trying to distance themselves from the west, so no surprise attack could happen.

Iron Curtain

The Soviet Union set up fences like this all around where they bordered the capitalist west. The Soviet Union wanted to keep capitalist ideas out and Soviet ideas in. The Soviets wanted to make a world where everything is communist and has communist ideas. The isolated their people from any ideas that were against these communist ideas.

Subway System

The Soviet Subway systems became very popular while behind the iron curtain. The Soviets used the subway systems as propaganda. The put up paintings and pictures of famous soviet leaders. Since the metro system was built by the socialists, they used it to show the people that socialism works.

Truman Doctrine

On March 12, 1947 President Truman signed the Truman Doctrine. The Truman Doctrine stated that it would provide economic help to all those countries that resisted communism. However the Truman Doctrine was not successful. Its purpose was not to be at defense to every country resisting communism, however that is what it turned into.

Marshall Plan

• The Marshall Plan was an economic recovery plan that was put in place to help rebuild those countries destroyed by WWII. The U.S. gave these rebuilding countries over 13 billion dollars. The U.S. tried to get Stalin to join in and help, but Stalin refused. The plan was supposed to make relations between the Soviets and Americans better, but it only made them worse. The Marshall Plan did speed up the recovery of Europe, but it also escalated the Cold War.

NATO

• The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created to help protect those countries attacked by the Soviet Union. 16 countries from Europe and North American joined. It is a military alliance so that if one gets attacked, all are getting attacked. The Soviet Union then created the Warsaw Pact after NATO was made.

Warsaw Pact

• It was a military alliance between seven eastern European countries The Warsaw Pact was created in a counter act against NATO. The Warsaw Pact strengthened the Soviets military and its government. It became the Warsaw Pact on East Berlin and NATO on West Berlin. This caused the Cold War to escalate.

Berlin Wall

• Germany and Berlin was split into 4 sections. U.S., France, and Britain occupying the west, while the Soviets occupied the east. At first if you had a pass, you could travel between east and west, but the Soviets quickly put a stop to that. They began building a wall down the middle of Berlin. Any attempt to cross was considered a crime. The east and west were now completely isolated from one another.

Berlin Airlift

• The Soviets set up a blockade and stopped resources from coming into Berlin. So the U.S. and Britain had planes fly over Berlin and drop supplies in West Berlin. They airlifted supplies into Berlin for about a year until the Soviets finally removed the blockade. In total, they airlifted over 2.4 million tons of food and supplies in over 300,000 airlifts.

Soviet Blockade

• Since Berlin was located just inside the Eastern section of Germany, it was completely surrounded by the Soviet Bloc. Because of this, the Soviet’s created a blockade around Berlin. They stopped the Autobahn from transporting supplies into the western region of the city. This is what caused the Berlin Airlift. The Soviet Blockade only lasted about a year whenever it was shut down in April of 1949.

• 60 construction workers went on strike in effort to get less work and more pay. The workers rioted up and down the streets of East Germany. The German police could not stop them, so the Soviet Troops and their ammunition got involved. At least 153 people were killed. This soon became a holiday in West Germany to remember those who were killed.

Berlin Brigade

• It was created n December 1961 during the high point of the Berlin Wall Crisis. It was under command of the U.S. Army. The troops of USBA were housed in several barracks around the city of Clayallee. They protected West Germany and its people from a possible attack from the Soviets.

Hungary Opens its Borders

• When Hungary opened its borders to Western Europe, it was the first step to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since the movement between communist countries was allowed freely. This allowed East Germans access to West Berlin and West Germany. Many riots also went on within East Germany which pressured the government into many reforms.

Four Point Agreement

• The agreement was signed on September 3rd, 1971 by the four allied countries leaders. It ushered a period known as Détente in East Germany, it also improved travel and communication between the two sections of Berlin. And eventually resulted in the reunification of Germany in 1990.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall

• In 1989 when the Berlin Wall opened, it sparked a change around the world. In many eyes, this brought an end to the Cold War since the Berlin Wall was the main symbol of it. The wall built in 1961 lasted over three decades and was one of the most symbolic figures of the Cold War.
