Types of Muscles

Ligaments vs. Tendons

• Skeletal/Voluntary- Skeletal muscle fibers occur in muscles which are attached to the skeleton. Those muscles that can be moved by our thoughts and actions.

• Smooth/Involuntary Muscle- Muscles that moves internal organs, such as the bowels, and vessels. Reflex action is made without our thought.

• Cardiac- The muscle of the heart Ex: This muscle is constantly working automatically without thought or reflex being needed. Without this cardiac functioning muscle, we die!

• Ligaments connect bones while tendons connect muscles to bones.

Muscle Anatomy

• Deltoids- a large, triangular muscle covering the joint of the shoulder, the action of which raises the arm away from the side of the body.

• Basic Exercise: Shoulder press

Muscle Anatomy

• Latissimus Dorsi- a broad, flat muscle on each side of the mid-back, the action of which draws the arm backward and downward and rotates the front of the arm toward the body.

• Basic exercise: lat pull down

Muscle Anatomy

• Hamstrings- any of the muscles/tendons that bound the bend of the knee.

• Basic exercise: leg curls

Muscle Anatomy

• The masseter muscle is a facial muscle that plays a major role in the chewing of food. The muscle is shaped similar to a parallelogram, connecting to the mandible and the cheekbone.

• Basic Exercise: jaw rotation, resistance type chewing motion

Muscle Anatomy

• Anterior Cruciate Ligament- The ACL, is a primary stabilizing ligament within the center of the knee joint that prevents hyperextension and excessive rotation of the joint.

Muscle Anatomy

• Pronator Teres- a muscle that is primarily in the forearm and inserts into the radius. Pronates the hand and forearm (turns it hand palm up)

• Basic exercise- dumbbell pronation,

(any movement involving wrist rotation)
