Murringo Hall was the place to be when local cabaret singing group, “Counterpoint” performed their very enjoyable show last month. Eris Gleeson, Peter Mullany, John Roxburgh, Julie O’Connor, Peter O'Connor, Peter Roberts and drummer Allan put on a fine performance and the crowd love it all. The variety of the acts and songs were known to everyone and the response of the audience was certainly an indication of how much they want them to return to our little hall. Yvonne would like to pass on her many thanks, on

Cathy & Garry Dowling have been travelling on their

amazing adventure around Australia and here is a sneak

peak of where they have been and what they have seen.

In Dampier, Western Australia, they visited the “Red Dog”

Memorial. Taking many photos of this now popular tourist

attraction made well known by the recent release of the

movie by the same name. If you haven’t seen it yet make

sure you do! And take some tissues with you! It is a fairly

accurate retelling of the true story of Red Dog “The Pilbara

Wanderer”.

Notes from Cathy - “This is our camp spot at Barn Hill “

We book for two nights but this changes to 6 as the time

slips by. We meet our “new Best Friends” Adrian and Fay

while out walking along the beach, they invite us back to

their van for coffee and a chat then it is swim time - best

around high tide time.

Barn Hill Station bakes fresh bread everyday, big “Door

Stopper” loaves, sometimes wholemeal sometimes multi

grain, always yummy! Also at 2pm everyday they bring

down a large tray of vanilla slices, these quickly become a

favourite so we wait everyday for the next batch!

Til next time, Cathy & Garry.

The Travelers

Tassie Trip “Tasmania”, what a place. The vast wilderness, the amazing sight of

the beautiful coastline and unbelievable farms in the Midlands. We

loved all the quirky little village everywhere too.

We started at Davenport and travelled to Stanley (The Nut). From

there we went onto Strahan and then Hobart for 3 days. Huon

Valley, Salamander Markets and Port Arthur before heading up the

East Coast to Wineglass Bay, Bay of Fires, Georgetown,

Beaconsfield and Launceston. The boat trip over was an adventure.

What an awesome state to visit and 2 weeks is just not enough. We

would definitely go back tomorrow.

Cheers from Ken & Maureen Virgo from the little pink house.

A toast to Gordon Patterson In the October issue of “Our Murringo Matters”, I wrote a cheerio

to Gordon Patterson who was a patient in Clare Holland House in

Canberra at the time. Gordon sadly lost his battle with cancer on

the 14th of November, family and friends gathered at his funeral

which was conducted at the Boorowa Lawn Cemetery on the 17th

November 2011.

Gordon Patterson leaves behind his lovely wife, Alma, his children

Doug, Lois and Bruce and their families. The family would like to

thank everyone for their prayers and kind thoughts whilst Gordon

was ill.

Gordon life was a life full of plenty of hard work as well as a lot of

enjoyment with and for his family and friends. Gordon and Alma’s

life together followed the old saying “the harder you work the

luckier you get” and his family carried on the ethic in their lives.

Gordon was known by many different names – dad, pop, Gordon,

Patto, Gut or whatever Alma called him when he got on her goat.

Gordon Patterson was born on the 4th April 1926 and was one of

six boys and five girls that were born in order of Jack, Bill, Les

(Snow), Bert, Gordon and Rex. Then came the five girls of whom Jill is the eldest followed by Una, Roma,

Sally and Pam.

Despite suffering from frequent bouts of osteomylitis from the age of 9 to 27 years. Gordon was an ex-

ceptional athlete particularly in sprinting. He won many nearby towns gifts with prize money to the win-

ner of one pound (a lot of money in the 30’s and 40’s). On one occasion in Young he won the Gift and

teamed with his 3 brother Snow, Bert and Rex to win the relay.

Leaving school at 14 yrs he worked as a fencer, a stockman, a drover, wheat humper (180 lb bags), prune

dryer, dam builder, wood carter and rabbiter. At 17 his mother took him to Sydney and said he was 21

years old and got a job at the railway. During that time he worked around Milvale for 3 and half years

spike driving into the sleepers. All

the workers were self catered and

slept in tents.

Gordon was a talented Rugby

League player when he was 21, he

went to Sydney and played with

North Sydney. An accident with an

opened 44 gal drum ended it.

Returning to Boorowa he got

employment with PMG rabbitting

along the lines. He made more

money from rabbitting than the

wages they paid. He stayed with

Eugene Hyile and met his sister,

Alma. They courted going to

dances and soon danced into her

heart. Back Row: Jack, Bert, Bill, Snow, Butty and Harriet

Front Row: Rex, Gordon, Jill, Una and Roma taken at Bellevue, Murringo

They married quietly in Goulburn and set up home in Boorowa where they bought a house for 500 pound

and paid it off in a year. They soon bought a dairy farm and ran it for 10 years. Their cows all had names

with “Sue” being last in the cow bales.

They kept buying small blocks of land and finally sold the dairy and bought “The Ranch”, a 1200 acre farm

that took a lot of clearing with gelignite and snakes. Doug and Bruce loved the “The Ranch”, but Lois

wasn’t impressed.

With the farm they started a Carrying business – hereditary as Gordon’s father and brother both had one.

They bought a Commer truck and when business improved bought another truck for Alma, just so she

wouldn’t feel left out. They carted anything and everything. Including 1000 bales of wool and 1000 ton of

bagged super yearly. Show cattle and squealing pigs to Sydney were always on the agenda.

Gordon tried to retire in 1976 but it was futile as he worked harder for everyone else. Then in 1979 he

tried again to retire and moved to Ulladulla.

After 10 years it proved too hard to be away from his family especially his grandkids who he loved and

they loved him as the best Pop in the world. As sick as he became, Gordon insisted on going to his

grandson, Ben’s wedding and the next day the BBQ at Murrumbateman. He made and everyone was so

happy that he did.

In his spare time he followed his family and grandkids in their different sports. He became involved in

Boorowa Schoolboys Carnivals cutting saplings, painting them and erecting them as goal posts. He cut

wood for Lions Club, Rotary, Raffles and manned the gated at Picnic races, shows and Sunday Football.

He wouldn’t have been a Patterson if he couldn’t lay Euchre, 500 or Crib with expert teacher such as

Grandma Footes, his mother Harriet and Aunty Allie. The family went fishing often and meet up with

relatives. They had a caravan made out of a cattle crate on a truck with a tarp over the top.

With his boys and grandsons and their mates they went shooting once a year. Gordon did all the

organising, the boys did all the enjoying, Their record was 230 faxes and 12 pigs. When he cooked meals

he always insisted on clean hands.

He loved his garden and always had to have a tomato before Christmas. Even as his health was fading he

made sure family put in the onions, tomatoes and cucumbers.

Gordon and Alma travelled a lot with his brother, Rex and Aileen to New Zealand, the Interdominion, to

Tasmania, Fiji and Cairns and also many trips with Merv and Bub Woods.

The much loved Patterson Reunions were always a hit with the last being in 2009 at Gordon’s daughter’s

Lois’ place which Gordon made sure happened.

His silly grin will always be missed. Rest in peace, Gordon.

Left to Right: Taken at “Bellevue”, Murringo.

Back Row: Bert, Harriet, Snow, Bill, Butty

and Jack holding Roma.

Front Row: Una, Jill, Rex and Gordon. Patterson cousins gathered together at Gordon’s funeral.

Brown Thackeray Sports Carnival - What an amazing year Murringo Public

School is having on the sporting field. First we won the Phillips Shield and last

month we took out the Brown Thackeray Shield as well! Most pleasing, was the

fact that it was definitely a team effort – with outstanding performances across

the whole school. The Brown Thackeray carnival was held at Monteagle this

year, with Wombat, Monteagle, Maimuru and Murringo schools competing.

Everybody put in a fantastic effort – with red shirts EVERYWHERE on the day.

Our participation and support of each other was definitely what turned the tide

in our favour. There were some stand out performances however, including

trophies in:

P&C - 1st Tug of War – 1st women’s relay – 1st men’s relay

Jack Stephenson – 1st Senior Boys Shot Put – 1st Open Boys Championship Race

– 1st – 11yr Boys Long Jump – 1st 11yr Boys Age Race – 1st Senior Cross Country – Senior Boys

Champion

Abbie Grant – 1st 7 yr Girls Age Race

Campbell Duff – 1st Minor Boys Championship Race –

1st 7yr Boys Sack Race – 1st 7yr Boys Potato Race – 1st

7 yr Boys Age Race – Minor Boys Champion

Shannon Robertson – 1st Junior Girls Championship

Race – 1st 10yr Girls High Jump – 1st 10yr Girls Age

Race – Junior Girls Champion

Jack Grant – 1st 9yr Boys Long Jump – 1st 9yr Boys High

Brett Taylor – 1st Senior Boys Championship Race

Samantha McDonald – 1st 11yr Girls Long Jump

Congratulations kids

and parents, on your

fine effort! We would

not have won the

single one of you –

whether you came

first in a race or not –

you were all stars !!!

Morning Tea for Sheryl - Last month

we gathered together on the school

grounds to share a lovely morning tea

to celebrate Sheryl’s time driving all

the kids on her bus. Sheryl was

presented with a small gift at the

morning assembly in appreciation for

looking after all our kids and keeping

them safe on the bus. The kids all sang

“For she’s a jolly good fellow” to her

and presented her with a gluten free

cake which Sue Pepperell made and

iced. Sharing some yummy treats

under the trees made it all the more

special. Thank you to all of the mum’s

and grandma’s who provided such a

great spread.

School Spectacular - What an amazing time we had, attending the 2011 School Spectacular concert in

Sydney last Friday. Students had to get up

pretty early as we left at 6.30am and were

accompanied by some of our past students

and some of the mum’s and grandma’s.

It was a wonderful day especially when we

reached Sydney as some of our students had

never been to Sydney before, let alone see

the Harbour Bridge.

The concert itself was mind blowing, and the

highlight for many of our girls was seeing

their idol—Jack Vidgen—winner

of this year’s Australia’s Got Tal-

ent. The kids were also thrilled to

meet Amberlee from ABC 3 who

was happy to pose for photo-

graphs.

Let’s hope that we might see

some of our superstars on the

Sydney Entertainment Centre

stage one of these days.

Kinder Orientation - Our littlest students have

been getting themselves ready for the

challenges of ‘big’ school next year—attending

our Orientation Program over the past 3 weeks.

Luke, Peter, Mark, Caitlin, Gerad and Timmy

have been coming to school every Monday,

Tuesday and Thursday and have responded

well to the challenge. We look forward to

seeing all of their bright happy faces each day

next year.

A Poem for Christmas ……….

A Child's Eyes

If you have found that you have lost

all joy as Christmas nears;

If all you see are busy shops,

and money pressing fears.

If tired feet and pushing crowds,

hot Santas in the sun,

belie the fact that someone said

that Christmas should be fun.

Then look into a child's eyes,

and see reflected there

the innocence of perfect faith

and knowing, wondrous care.

For they have trust in time long past,

when a little babe was born

to bring to us the joy of love

on that first Christmas morn.

Zucchini? Maybe some of these or maybe all.

Vegies that are underway will be hungry right now, so for leaf

harvesting plants like Spinach, Silverbeet, Lettuce and herbs

apply liquid nitrogen-rich fertilisers.

As soon the spring rains finish I apply mulch to the garden to

make sure the rain gets through to the soil

and to keep the moisture in. It's important

to keep topping up the mulch to a depth of

about 75mm throughout summer and not

allow it to wear thin

Summer is the prime time for plants to

succumb to pests and diseases, and they

become more vulnerable if they are

moisture-stressed. Effective irrigation, soil

conditioning, sensible fertilising and

mulching certainly help to keep plants in

good shape but it is important to be on the

lookout for common offenders such as fruit

fly, citrus leafminer, two-spotted mite and

scale. Happy Gardening!

Mrs Parkman set to Retire ……..

It is with mixed feelings that we bid a fond farewell to the longest

serving teacher at Murringo Public School this year, as she enters

into a VERY well earned retirement.

Annette Parkman has taught at Murringo Public School (off and

on) since 1978 and is a beloved teacher and colleague. She has

given everything she has to the students of this village over many

years and they all remember her fondly. The new library at the

school was dedicated to Annette last year at the 150th

celebrations and will always remain “Annette’s Book Nook”.

Thankfully we will still see her around the village, either with her

husband John and probably with her two children, Andrew and

Alecia and their growing families.

We will miss you, Mrs Parkman. Seeing you when we run into the

library and you showing us the new books that have arrived. We

hope that will come and teach us when we need someone to fill in

for Mrs Dean or Mrs Neville.

Life in “Annette’s Book Nook” will not be the same without you!

Hope you enjoy your retirement and remember when Mr Parkman

drives you mad you can always come back and visit us at school.

means that Murringo’s premier social event is on again: the Murringo Fire

Brigade Christmas party! It’s on tonight, Friday 2nd December with the

festivities beginning at 7pm. The usual celebrations

will feature, with Mitzi ensuring that the BBQ is done

to perfection! Please bring a plate to share to

compliment the BBQ, either a salad or a sweet will be

fine. The yummy sausage sandwiches will only cost

you $3 and scrumptious steak sandwiches at $4 each and with that you eat indulge

in all the salads and sweets you like.

Ice-cold beer will be available at reasonable prices, along with wine and soft drinks.

Santa will be calling to Murringo in one of our trucks, so the kids will have plenty to

look forward to. Also, the raffle will be run, with some great prizes on offer.

the last ever Year 10 Class to sit the

School Certificate. 2011 is the final

year that the School Certificate will

be sat in New South Wales. Students

are unable to actually leave school at

the end of Year 10 anymore unless

they have either an apprenticeship or

traineeship, or are heading into full-

time work.

The girls had a great time getting

ready, doing each others makeup and

hair in preparation for their big night.

A Time to Reflect

Many of us would remember good times at our little

craft shop, the one where you need to duck you head to

get under the verandah.

Well it’s time to say Goodbye, as it is closing down!

Special Thanks must go to Maureen Dawe and

Mary Fogg for keeping the workshop going for such a

long time. Also a big “Thanks” must go to Greg Fogg,

Tiiu, Angela & Rob Summerfield and Marty Hewson.

It’s been fun!
