We adhere to sound commercial principles, providing our clients with measurable benefits.

Friable asbestos is asbestos containing material that is in powder form or that can becrumbled, pulverised or reduced to a powder by hand pressure when dry. Thismaterial is very easy to disturb and make airborne so it is necessary to have stricthigh-level control measures in place for safe removal. Some frequent examples ofwhere we have used friable asbestos removal methods include:

• Removal of pipe lagging• Asbestos cement products in extremely poor condition• Ceiling insulation containing asbestos• Asbestos containing dust and debris in large amounts

Murphy’s have the relevant asbestos removal licences and trained personnel toenable the compliant removal of this hazardous material.

The asbestos material is soaked with PVA glue to prevent fibres from becomingairborne. The material is then wrapped in plastic and transported for disposal at alicenced waste facility. Personnel are required to wear disposable coveralls, half-facemasks and gloves and air monitoring is conducted throughout the removal process.

We are able to safely remove and dispose of lead containing paint.

Safe removal methods involve using coveralls, dust masks and gloves for ourpersonnel and suitable disposal of waste at an appropriate facility.

We are capable of removing asbestos contaminated soil. This may be part of theplanned scope of works or due to discovery of the contamination during the courseof other works.

We are able to remove and dispose of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB). These areoften are found in light capacitors and electrical equipment. Removal involvespersonnel wearing chemically impervious PPE and disposing in leak proof containersat an approved facility.

As part of our services, we are able to conduct hazardous materials testing andcompile hazardous material reports. They are a requirement under the WHSRegulations and the Australian Standard for Demolition. We use fully qualified andcompetent consultants to undertake and compile our hazardous materials surveys.NATA certified laboratories test samples for the presence of hazardous materials.

Damaged concrete can lead to structural problems and it is imperative thatdamage is resolved forlong term durability of structures. Concrete with cracks, spalled or chipped surfaces, or damage from physical impact, should beremediated as quikcly as possible. Our concrete remediation services can helpresolve degradation in concrete by developing methods and proposingsolutions that enhance durability.

Provision of crack repairs, patch repairs, and delivery of hard-wearing floorcoatings and joint sealants are fundamental capabilities.

Durability of concrete and steel often depends on quality application ofprotective coatings. We are experts in the application of coatings includingheavy duty performance coatings for various structures including flooring andwater retaining structures. We ensure that all systems comply with rigorousOH&S standards. Works are performed to standards such as the SydneyWater Specifications SS210 and WSA 201, and inspected by NACEaccredited inspectors.

Some of the systems we use are:● Polymer modified cementitious materials● Polyurethane resins, acrylic resins, or epoxy resins● Bitiminous material, chlorinated rubber, silane and siloxanes

Sealing.Strengthening.

Our expert team can easily spot the signs of any issues with yourjointing systems, providing a thorough assessment of your joints’needs and rectifying as soon as possible.

As part of our comprehensive assessment and solution plan, we willtake into account every individual joint and nominate joint systemsthat are fit for purpose and with proven performance.

Structural strengthening is the process of upgrading structures toimprove performance under existing loads or to increase strength ofstructural members to carry additional loads.

Structural strengthening can be applied to buildings, bridges, waterretaining structures, wharves and jetties and logistical structuressuch as silos. The need for strengthening is often a result of changein use, a change to building codes, structural defects, or seismicconditions or the need to apply additional loads.

Murphy’s has the expertise in the application of strengtheningtechniques including:

● Structural crack repair

● Grouting

● Addition of fabricated steel

● Application of carbon fibre reinforced polymers inlaminate, sheet or rod form.

Being in the middle of Sydney Harbour, this wasa complex project. Additionally, needing towork at considerable heights presented anumber of challenges.

To overcome these challenges, we developedinnovative work techniques to successfullymanage the risks/difficulties that the projectpresented.

We delivered with no lost time injuries, safety orenvironmental issues. We upheld heritage compliancethrough approved working techniques and our engagedour most competent and experienced personnel to dothe job ensuring that Cockatoo Island remainedoperational for the duration of all works onsite.

We liaised with Sydney Harbour Federation Trust (SHFT)and other stakeholders for the development of theProject Specific Management Plan, as well as theEnvironmental Management Plan and Quality AssuranceManagement Plan for implementation on site.

We adoped numerous methods, industry practices andtechniques. These included wet and controlled workingtechniques to mitigate and prevent air-born dust, alongwith siltation sock and fences to protect the onsitestormwater and surrounding Sydney Harbour. Task-Specific Inspection Test Plans were also implemented.

Murphy's Remedial Builders was engaged toperform the roofing, chimney repairs andhazardous materials remediation work at WhiteBay Power Station for the Sydney HarbourForeshore Authority (SHFA).

The site is a former coal fired power station thathas been closed since the early 1980's. Theproject works were undertaken to make selectedbuildings weather proof by replacing roofs, windows and downpipes. The chimneystabilisation cables were reconditioned andasbestos containing materials were removedfrom the ceilings in the former administrationand staff amenities buildings.

Below lists some of the methods we implemented to ensure asmooth running project:

The provision of a safe work platform enabled the roofers toremove old roof sheets and lay safety mesh, while preventingfalls through the open roof space.

The construction of the pitched boiler house roof involved theremoval of a flat concrete roof at a height of over 40m from theboiler house floor. As there was nothing beneath the concreteslab, Murphy's Access Solutions constructed a bespokesuspended scaffold system to provide a work platform for thebreaking of the slab with jackhammers.

Murphy’s were requested to recommend thescope of works for this project which involvedcrack repairs on walls by crack injection usingParchem FOSROC products.

The Sydney Desalination Plant required repairworks on the concrete structures wherecorrosion or cracking was deemed excessive tothe internal surface of the Pre Treatment Filter(PTF) and the Filter Water Tank (FWT). Weapplied internal concrete coatings material tothe pre-treatment filter and filter water tank.

Inspection and test plans were used throughout theproject to track and monitor workmanship and key holdpoints requiring inspection by engineers or otherspecialists during the project.

Pre-start tool box talks were held daily and all staff wereinducted to site security, safety and environmentalprocesses. Cracking repairs.
