HMAS VENDETTAVIETNAM DEPLOYMENT

15th September 1969-11th April 1970

On 15th September 1969 HMAS Vendetta sailed from Sydney for Subic Bay to replace HMAS Brisbane in the Seventh Fleet on the 28th.

On 2nd of October Vendetta relieved USS Walke at Da Nang as the Naval Gunfire Support Ship for 1 Corps, Vendetta’s first operations were in support of

US Marines and Korean troops attempting to stop the Viet Cong from interfering with the rice harvest in 1 Corps. On the 3rd of October she fired her first shots against the enemy.

While at Da Nang the ships divers routinely searched the hull and anchor chain for mines and there were anti-swimmer sweeps every night.

On the 7th of October the ship moved 60 miles south to Quang Tin providing support to the US 23rd Infantry Division operating in the Chu Lai area. Vendetta’s gunfire was accurate destroying VC storage areas and troop

concentration. On 29th November

Vendetta set course for Taiwan and then returned to Subic for boiler cleaning and rebarrelling.

Back on the gunline on 21st December. Vendetta withdrew 6 miles to seaward and resumed a two-watch defence system.

On the 26th December Vendetta resumed her fire support duties on targets west of Phan Theit until the three hour New Year ceasefire.

In mid-January Vendetta was in dock

in Hong Kong but by the 18th February was on station near the Long Hai Hills east of Vung Tau firing on cave complexes.

Clearing operations were carried out on the 21st near Cap Ke Ga and as the ship moved north the ship was presented with the unusual target of a herd of cattle which then provided the local government troops with fresh beef.

On 2nd March the ship shelled a village near Phan Rang and a bunker and cave complex before she left for Subic where new barrels were fitted to A and X turrets on 7th March.

Vendetta’s last period on the gunline was off U Minh in western 4 Corps and although ARVN were heavily engaged it was seldom possible to obtain clearances to fire in their support.

On the 28th March at Subic ‘the Weight’ was passed to HMAS Hobart and Vendetta returned to Sydney on the 11th April.

Vendetta was the only Australian built warship to have served in Vietnam and the first Daring Class destroyer to see active service.

The ship fired 13,295 4.5-inch shells at 751 targets over five deployments. She and HMAS Sydney were the only two RAN vessels to deploy operationally under both the British White Ensign and the Australian White Ensign

Paul Arthur Pfeffer 14th Dec 1945- 11th June 2016When Paul Pfeffer (President) recognized it was about time the men of Murgon and sur-rounds needed a men’s

shed, he first made sure there were the numbers to back him up. He found plenty of men willing and eager to help, they wanted to be able to go somewhere where they felt they could relax, talk about every day things, their worries and be listened too.

In the beginning the men would meet at David Mollenhauers work shed in Rewald Street. They would meet on Wednesday’s and on the 29th March 2014 there were twenty nine men in attendance at a meeting when it was decided to call their group Murgon Men’s Shed.

Rewald Street was only temporary, they needed another place in Murgon which would be large enough to house many men and have room to work on different projects. Paul noticed the old railway station and its shed was empty not being used. It was the perfect place. He negotiated with the council and they were happy to let them use the facilities.

They received many donations from local businesses and members of the public to help them get started and on Friday 25 July 2014 they had an ‘Opening Day’. Many dignitaries were in attendance that day and at that time Duty Premier Jeff Seeney helped Paul cut the ribbon and declared the Men’s Shed Open. As the founder, Paul felt very proud and honoured that he had brought something to Murgon that was in great demand. He said “They had fifty one members in the short time it had been running”.

Now of course there are many more and all members work together on different projects that they enjoy. Some are bigger than others and some are very detailed and take a lot of time and patience. Others just like being part of something where they can go and have a coffee and a chat and not worry about anything.

That’s what Paul wanted and it saddens us that Paul was taken from us on Saturday 11th June. Paul was diagnosed with liver cancer last year and had been fighting it ever since. He fought a gallant fight and will be sadly missed by all his friends and family. We will remember him for his generosity, compassion and support. Story courtesy of Murgon Men’s Shed Newsletter.

At his funeral the family requested: We would like to allow everyone the opportunity to share their stories or testimonies of Paul, Those of you who

are able are invited to send them an e-mail with your stories to ; [email protected] in Peace Dear Friend, and yes they have changed the sign at the entrance as you requested.Photo L-R: Former Duty Premier Jeff Seeney and Paul Pfeffer

BIEDO Appoints New CEOI wish to announce the resignation of Carmel Summers as CEO of the

Burnett Inland Economic Development Organisation (BIEDO). Carmel joined the BIEDO team in August 2013 as a Business Financial Counsellor, providing assistance to Small Business Owners and Primary Producers affected by the flooding events in 2011 and again in 2013. Carmel displayed exceptional commitment to those clients, providing expert financial advice and support to many, in both the North and South Burnett.

In addition to her BFC role, Carmel took on the leadership of BIEDO in 2015 and during that time has been a wonderful, steadying influence for the organisation. The Board expresses their sincere appreciation to Carmel for her professional approach to the role and is grateful for her contribution to BIEDO.

The Board is pleased to announce that Kristy Frahm has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of BIEDO commencing 1st July 2016.

Kristy has been with BIEDO as their Finance Officer since January 2014 and during that time has become very familiar with the activities and processes of our not-for-profit organisation. Following her recent completion of Red Earth’s South Burnett Community Leadership Program and her commitment to community, we feel confident Kristy will enhance and grow BIEDO’s ability to deliver resources and services to small, rural communities across our region.

We thank you for your continued support of BIEDO and look forward to this new and exciting chapter under Kristy’s leadership.

SOUTH BURNETT PARKINSON’S SUPPORT GROUP

Even though the weather was not too good, it did not stop our members coming along to our June meeting to catch up with each other over a nice cup of tea and something yummy to go with it.

We try to have guest speakers come along and talk to us and we really appreciate that they give up their time for us. One of the guest speakers for June was Terry Lear from the Murgon Mens

Shed. He spoke about the various projects which the men are working on at the present time. These include making candle holders and flipping toys, native bee hives and leatherwork. He also showed us photos of an old German wagon which has been restored by the group (an eight month labour of love).

Terry described The Mens Shed as a place to chat and to be happy – a place for all men, regardless of age, background, ability etc. The ‘Shed’ is open on a Wednesday and Saturday morning. For further information phone Terry on 4169 5520.

Our second speaker for the morning was Roza Lear, a local artist who has exhibited at Wondai Art Gallery. She showed us some of her own artwork and told us of her personal experiences with painting. She told us she finds painting very relaxing and how quickly the time passes when she is doing her art. Her advice was that if you would like to paint, just paint. It is also important

to like what you do. Roza is involved with a social painting group at Castra where participants can have a go at painting. Thank you Terry and Roza.

We are a small welcoming group for all interested community members and Parkinson’s families and friends. There is no fee to join. We enjoy social outings and we try to have great guest speakers at our meeting, We look forward to meeting you.

NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRES BOOSTED IN STATE BUDGET

Vulnerable Queenslanders will be better supported thanks to a boost for neighbourhood centres of $6.9 million over four years announced in the 2016-17 State Budget.

Communities Minister Shannon Fentiman said the funding will enhance and support neighbourhood and community centres across Queensland so they can continue their vital work.

“Neighbourhood centres are the backbone of our community,” Ms Fentiman said.

“These hubs play such a vital role in providing people with access to information, advice, workshops, local events, counselling and support.”

Ms Fentiman said the Palaszczuk Government recognised there was an increase in demand for local support services in some small communities.

The 2016-17 capital program includes extra funding for neighbourhood centre replacement and upgrades:

• $1.1 million in 2016-17 ($2.6 million in total) to replace the existing neighbourhood centre (Graham House) at Taylor Street, East Murgon which is not fit-for-purpose.

Congratulations to Bill and Audrey Kapernick on their 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Bill and Audrey Kapernick (nee Marquardt) were married on the 30th June 1956 at the Wondai Anglican Church and were blessed with children, Greg, Gayle and twins Scott and Craig. They made their home on the family farm at Tablelands and were in partnership with Bills other four brothers and a sister dairying, growing peanuts and grain, doing contract bailing and heading and looking after a Santa cattle stud. The home at Tablelands was the central port of call of visitors wishing to enjoy the beautiful views of Murgon and the South Burnett. Both Bill and Audrey are big on involvement in the community, Bill having served as a councilor on the Murgon Shire Council for 18 years, is a former National Serviceman, is a life member of the Murgon Cricket club, is a member of numerous

other committees, was awarded a Citizen of the Year Award, played both tennis and football and volunteered at the Murgon Info Centre for the past 15 years. During their 60 years of marriage and not having time for a full on argument Audrey also was heavily involved with Guides, RSL Ladies Aux, visitor info centre, life member of Murgon Cricket Club, Castra Aux, P & C associations, teaching music, playing at dances with Beryl Yappa, was awarded a Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award and tendered to their four children’s needs. Life hasn’t been easy for Audrey, having to help with cattle calving while the men were away working but she came from a very tough Marquardt family who knew what rewards hard work brought. At their 60th Wedding Celebration celebrated at the Tablelands hall they once again enjoyed the company of their original wedding party plus the many relations and friends and 8 grandchildren..

COUNCIL ADOPTS THE 2016-2017 BUDGETMayor Keith Campbell has presented his first budget to Council, for implementation as of 1 July. The Local Government Act 2009 states that the budget must be prepared by the Mayor and delivered to

Councillors at least two (2) weeks before the statutory budget meeting. This legislative requirement has been met, however the contents of the budget were known by all the Councillors prior to its official adoption, as Councillors have worked together with senior staff over the last two (2) months to prepare the budget.

“The preparation of the 2016/2017 budget has once again been a difficult process as we focus on achieving a balanced budget for this financial year and for the next two (2) financial years, while endeavouring to continue to deliver on our core infrastructure assets such as roads, water and sewerage.” Mayor Campbell said.

Council has continued the strong fiscal management approach and has delivered a budget with a small operating surplus this year and into forward budgets. This result ensures Council will continue to remain sustainable and enables the absorption of any budget shocks while still providing the services expected in our communities.

While Council reviewed various options in developing its revenue strategy for 2016/2017, rate revenue is still Council’s only major and reliable source of funding. The budget provides for a 2.5% increase in our General Rate, the lowest since amalgamation and 1% less than predicted in last year’s forward estimates. “It is important to note that this increase will not be uniform across the region as the new land valuations issued by the Valuer General take effect from 1 July and directly influence the amount levied on each ratepayer.” Mayor Campbell said. “The return to the issuing of half yearly rate notices providing efficiency advantages for Council has been factored into the rate increase. In particular the financial savings of around $150,000 due to larger cash flows each six (6) months for investment as well as reduced costs for areas such as postage and printing. To assist ratepayers with the transition from quarterly notices, the discount period for the first six (6) monthly notice will be 60 days rather than 30 days which means the discount period will close late September or early October.”

Mayor Campbell explained during the budget presentation that for every $1,000 of general rates received Council spend: • $421 on the design, maintenance and renewal of our road network, it should be noted that the $200 road levy is in addition to this. • $135 on parks and recreation reserves • $62 on building and property maintenance • $42 on managing our pools and public halls • $53 on our Information, Communication and Technology • $30 on maintaining our Customer Service Centres/Administration Offices • $47 on Economic Development and

Tourism • $43 on Libraries • $60 on Corporate Governance, Finance and Human Resource Functions • $34 on Public Conveniences and Cemeteries • $23 on Pest management, not including any environmental levy projects • $25 on various community support activities, heritage and the arts. • $33 on environmental health services and compliance activities • $20 on Planning, Building and Plumbing Activities • $7 on other activities such as disaster management and indigenous affairs

BOOK LAUNCH WE WILL REMEMBER THEM ‘We Will Remember Them’ is an account of the South Burnett’s involvement in the Great War 1914-1918.

South Burnett Regional Council received funding from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to publish short stories of local Great War Veterans. As the South Burnett is across three (3) Federal Electorates funds were received from the Flynn, Wide Bay and Maranoa Federal members.

To make the book a more thorough record of the South Burnett’s Great War involvement, the database of all South Burnett Great War Veterans, compiled by Robyn Peterson and Daun Clapperton, has been included. The work Robyn and Daun put into this project has recently been acknowledged with the receipt of one (1) of only seven (7) National RSL ‘Anzac of the Year’ Awards.

The book is an informative and captivating account of how the Great War affected the South Burnett even though the war was taking place on the other side of the world. Combining the database of ‘Every Man Remembered’ with the short stories of individual veterans, the book also provides information on the conditions of the Great War and some touching memorials of the fallen. This book records the South Burnett’s contribution and will be a permanent memorial of the sacrifice of these men and women gave for their Country and our region.

Copies of the book will be donated to the local libraries and schools. A limited number of copies will be available for purchase from the local RSL clubs.

ST RITA’S STUDENTS VISIT MURGON AND CHERBOURG

In the last week of Term 2, the Year 10 students from St Rita’s College were hosted by St Joseph’s Primary School and the Barambah Environmental Education Centre for their annual immersion program. St Rita’s College is an independent Catholic day school located in the northern suburbs of Brisbane and caters for girls from Year 7-12.

The one-week immersion provides Year 10 students with an opportunity to connect with a regional school and to deepen their understanding of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous experience of injustice.

The Year 10 students worked alongside the St Joseph’s students helping them with their reading, sight words, and other class activities. The girls also went on an excursion to Kingaroy with the Preps and Year Ones, and helped out at St Joseph’s sports carnival as timekeepers, cheer squad and judges. Students from both schools developed strong bonds with each other and the lower primary students were particularly happy to have the St Rita’s students on campus helping out.

The St Rita’s girls visited the Barambah Environmental Education Centre where they learnt about some of the traditions of the Indigenous people in the area; they made string using traditional methods, threw boomerangs, learnt to light fires, build shelters and tasted bush tucker. The girls also visited the Ration Shed in Cherbourg where they learnt about the history of the treatment of Indigenous people under the Protection Act.

Through the immersion program, the Year 10 students learnt to serve others and develop leadership skills. They experienced what it is like to live in a regional community, what challenges the children face, and the injustices that Indigenous people have suffered. The student’s from St Rita’s left with a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture and strong connections to the people of Murgon and Cherbourg.

CareFlight now known as LifeFlight

For the past 35 years we’ve been saving lives and serving the community. Since 1981, we’ve provided a vital lifeline to people in need across Queensland, having flown 44,000 critical rescue missions.

An achievement which has only been possible with you, as our supporter, at our side. We’ve come along way in 35 years, we now operate 12 rescue helicopters and three air ambulance jets across

13 locations (including one in Singapore)But above all, saving lives is the core of what we do every day across our organization. After much

consideration we have decided we needed a new name that reflects this.

NEW NAME, SAME SERVICEThe change from CareFlight to Life Flight is in name only.

We remain a not for profit organization and our core mission of saving lives and serving the community, our heart and soul, won’t miss a beat.

Our pilots, crews, engineers, medical teams and support staff will retain the same purpose and the same passion as always – 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

We retain our incredible 23 year partnership with our naming rights sponsor, RACQ, and the colours of our iconic yellow and blue helicopters will remain the same. The new name will also help clarify the difference between our service and CareFlight NSW, which has always been a separate organization to CareFlight Group Queensland.

Whilst there are some costs involved, the change has been developed as part of our normal business expenses and all of your donations will continue to directly support our community rescue service.

With your ongoing support, Life Flight will continue to provide a total blanket of care to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

I’m so excited to be joining you in this new era of our lifesaving rescue service! And I am really looking forward to getting out and meeting you all as Life Flight’s Community Engagement representative, having started with the organization on the North Coast in May. My background is with Cancer Council QLD, where I was based on the Sunshine Coast for five years. I worked closely with volunteers and the cancer community, and I remain passionate about ensuring patients and families get the support and medical help they need during their cancer journey.

I feel exactly the same way about LifeFlight. Every person has the right to receive medical care when needed and a chance to live a full and healthy life. Our ultimate goal is to save lives – anyone, anywhere, anytime; and I am thrilled to be working with you all.

Jodie Durkin.Editors comment: Organizer Sheryl Barker from the little farming area of Monogorilby, advised me that at

their recent camp kitchen in the bush they raised $2498.00 for Care Flight, and wished to say many thanks to all involved and a fantastic effort from their small community.

There I was, sitting at the bar, staring at my drink, when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig.

“Well, whatcha gonna do about it ?” he says menacingly, as I burst into tears. “Come on, man,” the biker says, “I didn’t think you’d CRY. I can’t stand to see a man crying.” “This is the worst day of my life,” I say. “I’m a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me.

When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don’t have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife in bed with another man... and then my dog bit me.

So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; and then you show up and drink the whole damn thing !!

But Hell, enough about me, how are you doing ?”

SMASHING THE GLASS CEILINGMeet Queensland’s oldest registered teacher

Lillian Shelton

When Lillian Shelton started teaching in the 1940s, there were no female principals. She was once asked by a male colleague, “If you were a principal, what would you do about the boys’ toilets?”“What you do about the girls’ toilets,” she replied matter-of-factly.Lillian went on to become not only a principal, but an Inspector of Schools. In 1974, she was appointed as the first female District Inspector of Schools in the state.Today, at 92, she is Queensland’s oldest registered teacher. She has witnessed extraordinary changes since the 1940s.Back then teachers were only given only one year’s training before being placed in their home town, when

possible, to teach for a year. After that, they were often sent to one-teacher schools.“It was like being thrown into the deep end because you were on your own; nobody came near you, nobody

helped you. There were no advisory teachers, so you were just plonked there. You sank or swam,” Lillian says.“And you learned fast I tell you, because they were all one-teacher schools and you would have anything up

to 25 kids and you would have ... at least five different levels, or six different levels to teach.”

At her first one-teacher school at Mt Sibley, on the Darling Downs, there were 19 horses and 22 children. Young teachers had to board with families in the area.

“I think back on the days of the one-teacher schools – they were terribly lonely. I was just dependent on farming families to put me up. There was no public transport and then few young teachers had cars. So I was dependent on the family to go anywhere,” Lillian says.

“Sometimes you would have to be in a meeting where they discussed who was going to have the teacher next, which was not very nice,” she says, before breaking out into laughter at the ridiculousness of it.

“You just had to deal with it. You had to learn to be tough.”

Page 23: MURGON JULY 2016€¦ · We have lots of past history even involving Bushrangers, We have numerous Service and Sporting Clubs, Weekly Cattle Sales, numerous Church’s, We have Festivals

23

SMASHING THE GLASS CEILINGBetween 1943 and 1972 Lillian worked in dozens of schools as a teacher, relieving teacher and principal. After a stint as a teacher in the UK, her excellence was recognised when in 1963 she was asked to be the first

principal of the Charters Towers School of the Air – the second School of the Air in Queensland. In 1973, while Principal of The Hall Girls and Infants School in Rockhampton, she was asked to be an

Acting Inspector of Schools in Maryborough. The following year she made state history when she was named Queensland’s first female District Inspector of Schools (primary) for the Western Queensland region, based in Mount Isa.

“I was a bit over-awed, but I managed all right because I had an enormous grounding after teaching so many classes in one-teacher schools, and then coming through with diverse experience as a principal. I was used to taking responsibility for a whole school,” she says.

“It was the men who had the problem. They were wide-eyed with wonder that this would ever, ever happen. Nobody ever thought there would be female principals or female Inspectors. We broke the mould.”

The Mount Isa District at the time stretched from Mornington Island down to Birdsville, the full length of the state. Her office was in Longreach.

“I did a lot of flying,” she says. She retired as the District Inspector of Schools in Gympie in 1983.ALWAYS A TEACHERLillian says while some teachers and principals had a fear of Inspectors, she always saw her role as helping

and supporting school staff, and she believes the education system is worse off for abolishing the role. The demise of the Inspectorate, the inability of some children to read despite years of schooling, teacher

training, individualised teaching and instilling in children the joy of reading are just some of the issues Lillian is passionate about.

Since retiring she has been involved in religious education in the Gympie area and once a year attends a primary school to adjudicate a speaking competition, which makes her miss teaching.

“I itch to do that sometimes – just to stand in the classroom and teach something,” she says.

“It’s just having a rapport with those kids.“There is one word that describes teaching

– it is a relationship, that’s what it is, it’s a relationship.

“You set up a relationship between you and those children and they have to respect that, and you have to respect them.”

She says a great teacher is someone who is stable within themselves and well qualified, “a person with empathy and intelligence and a concern for individual children, rather than a concern for subject matter. Subject matter

counts, but if you are a teacher and you only go in to deliver subject matter, then you are not getting there.”“A student isn’t just someone to whom you deliver subject matter; each student is the important person in the

classroom, and the teacher’s job is to make sure that each person understands and progresses.”At 92, Lillian remains on the Register of Teachers because she continues to do work in the education area, and,

when it comes down to it, she is a teacher.“When I was five I said to my mother ‘I want to be a teacher’, and I just was,” she says.“I like things done well and organised well. In a school you can’t muck around; you have to be on top of things;

you have to know exactly what you are doing and where your curriculum is going; and you have to know your children and make sure they get there – that’s the main thing.”

• The oldest registered teacher in Queensland who is still undertaking paid work in schools is Brisbane Grammar School Latin teacher Don Barrett, who is 86 years old.

EULOGY FOR DUDLEY SIPPEL Dudley Francis Sippel was born on the 15th June 1929 at Marburg hospital, the third child to Francis William

Sippel and his wife Matilda Hermoine (nee Maroske). He was baptised in the Frenchton Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Marburg on the 21st of July 1929 by Pastor HE Temme.

He lived his early years at Mt Tarampa and at the age of 4 years he moved with his parents and his brother Ren and sister Beatrice to the farm at Moffatdale. Dudley began his schooling at Moffatdale State School in 1935 and attended until he was 14 years old and couldn’t wait to leave to take up working on the land. To work the farm in the early days they used horses then later a tractor with spiked wheels, then eventually a grey Fergy tractor. Dudley soon learnt from his father how to till the soil, grow potatoes, Lucerne and many other crops.

In his later teens he joined junior farmers and in 1949 he won the Murgon Silver Jubilee Show Junior Farmers Competition. He helped his Uncle Fred Sippel with grooming his jersey cattle ready for showing at local and Brisbane shows.

In November 1951 he met Gladys Bond at Arthur and Amy Bond’s wedding. That night he went home and he told his mother that he knew he was going to marry Gladys one day. They got engaged on the 24th May 1952 and he married his soul mate Gladys on the 22nd November 1952. The marriage of Dudley and Gladys was blessed with the birth of 5 children. Julie, Jennifer, Murray, Jacqui and Leisa.

Together Dudley and Gladys worked side by side on their farm growing potatoes, lucerne and onions. Harvest time with the spuds & onions involved employing a lot of people over the years. Murray remembers when the meatworks closed down in the 80’s that many of the people who lost their jobs there came and worked on the farm for them during harvest.

His other love was cricket, in his teenage years he & his brother Ren used to ride their bikes to Redgate to play cricket. On the way home they used to shelter under the windmill tank at Steinhardts road out of the thunderstorms and sometimes they could shelter there for up to two hours before they made it home safely. In 1973 he also enjoyed playing cricket for a couple of seasons with Kumbia in the Saturday afternoon competition with his cousin Ivan Sippel. He then joined the Murgon team and had many happy years being Captain of that team. He became a life member and patron of the Murgon cricket club in 1974.

Dudley’s love for potato growing became more important than playing cricket as he had a young family to support. However his cricket mates Les Reddacliff, Trevor Holznagel, Roy Latham and Alan Fowler wanted him to

Page 27: MURGON JULY 2016€¦ · We have lots of past history even involving Bushrangers, We have numerous Service and Sporting Clubs, Weekly Cattle Sales, numerous Church’s, We have Festivals

27

be able to continue playing cricket with them on the weekends. So they set up work lights on the back of the potato harvester so they could dig potatoes at night. Between them, they would come out to the farm after their usual work day to help pick potatoes for 3-4 hours a night just so that Dudley could play cricket on the weekend with them. This was an example of the mateship and the important friendships that were shared & treasured by Dudley.

In the early 70’s daughter Julie applied to become an air hostess and Dudley didn’t want her to leave home so he bought her a dress shop in town. The shop operated from 1973 to1977 and he enjoyed going on ‘buying trips’ with Julie. In particular he loved watching the models on the catwalk and one particular trip he ended up buying the whole line of clothing that Julie only intended buying a small sample of.

When Julie & Chris were living in Edenhope, Victoria, Dudley, Glady, Jacqui & Leisa enjoyed a month’s holiday with them and this was Dudley’s first & last time flying in a jet plane. Holidays were not high on Dudley’s agenda, but after Dudley’s heart attack in 1980 he decided twelve months later in 1981 it was time for a new adventure. So Glady, Leisa and he, set off on a road trip to Canberra and Victoria with Des, Lorraine and Kerry Sippel for an entire month, and no flying.

Having had 2 larger holidays they became fewer and far between. With Glady saying “Dudley we are going on holidays”, Dudley would agree and drop us off at our holiday destination and proceed home, returning the following weekend to pick us up. Holidays would only interfere with potato work! He always loved black soil between his toes rather than sand.

In 1994 Dudley & Glady semi retired and sold the home farm to Murray & Kate and bought a small block of land on Tipperary Road where Dudley continued to grow a few spuds and Lucerne.

He always loved his church and loved singing in the choirs. He held positions in the Church for many years as Chairman of St Pauls Lutheran Church Murgon from about 1974 to the early 1980’s. Until his first heart attack at 51 years of age, he was blessed with reasonable health up until the last couple of years.

Together Dudley and Gladys share 10 grand children and 6 great grand children. Their life has been rich with treasured memories and Dudley’s life was one of great achievement, hardwork, strong friendships and infinite love. Dudley’s family have set up an email account for people who knew him to send through their memories and stories. Those who knew Dudley are invited to send them an e-mail with your stories to [email protected]

Photo: Dudley and Glady Sippel at their 60th Wedding Anniversary Editors footnote: Sadly, Dudley Francis Sippel born 15th June 1929 passed away 8th July 2016, aged 87

years. The short verse of “God made a Farmer” read at his funeral was so fitting of Dudley’s life. In 2014 in Kingaroy Hospital Dudley was given 24 hours to live, next morning the Doctor commented I now believe the story in the bible concerning a man called Lazarus as Dudley had rallied around over night and went on to live and be cared for by his loving wife for the next 2 1/2 years. He was also a life member of the Murgon show society and Dudley and Glady were proud to be patron and patroness of the Murgon Show Society. Dudley commonly referred to as “The Spud Man” was more than just a friend, he was always involved with sport and the Murgon Show and loved exhibiting hay, chaff, potatoes and onions and at the show this year he commented to me “isn’t this awful, hardly any hay or produce in this pavilion and we have great farmers around here”.

Well I challenge the Murgon Show Society and all our local farmers, schools and home gardeners to compete and fill the pavilion in a “Dudley Sippel Memorial Farmers Comp” in 2017.

Just imagine if every producer, school or home gardener just gave three bales of hay, a selection from their grain crop, a few carrots, lettuce, beetroots, tomatoes, cotton, potatoes and onions etc how Dudley’s happy dreams could become a reality. The produce could either be returned to its owner, or auctioned off in front of the grandstand before the night program with the proceeds going to the Murgon Show Society or a charitable organization.

Come on Murgon we can do it for Dudley!

GOOMERI’SSergeant Warren Lohmann

retires after 34 years.Warren you have done us proud, we will miss you and

the friendly wave as you patrolled the Burnett Highway. Put your feet up and enjoy your retirement with your

wife Julie. We look forward to catching up with you at your

community thanks and retirement function in Goomeri on Saturday 13th August .

Sergeant retires after 34 years service to Goomeri

On April 16, 1982, then Senior Constable Warren James Lohmann arrived in Goomeri to take up duties at the local police station.

To take you back; in 1982 Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister of Australia, Brisbane was preparing to host the Commonwealth Games and the Wivenhoe Dam was still under construction. And I, his current Senior Constable, was still three years away from entering this world (as I like to regularly remind Sergeant Lohmann).

Fast forward 34 years and the now Officer in Charge Sergeant Warren Lohmann is still in Goomeri serving the community he chose to call home for more than three decades. In that time Sergeant Lohmann, or simply Warren as the locals call him, has raised three wonderful children and married his wife Julie.

Warren was inducted into the Queensland Police Force (as it was in those days) on December 10, 1976 and served in Tewantin, Cooroy, Townsville and Murgon before landing in Goomeri. In 1992 Warren was promoted to Sergeant Officer in Charge of Goomeri Station and knowing he was onto a good thing laid down roots and didn’t leave until his retirement.

During his time in Goomeri he has guided the community through many challenging times including the loss of the area’s primary industry in the Murgon meatworks, and the devastating 2011 & 2013 floods. Warren has been an invaluably active participant in numerous community groups, events and organisations in the local community over the years including the Goomeri State School Adopt-a-Cop, coaching junior sport, local Lions club, Freemasons, the famous Goomeri Pumpkin Festival and many more.

He is a highly respected member of this small community and his local knowledge and dedication to the town will be greatly missed.

Warren’s 34 year tenure at Goomeri has been one of the longest periods of continuous service in the Queensland Police Service’s history; an achievement that is not possible without the wholehearted support of the local community who have always had a familiar face to turn to in their hour of need.

Warren has not turned up to work every day for the last 34 years because he had to, but because he loves it. After 40 years of service to the people of Queensland the time has now come for Warren to call it quits and enjoy his long retirement with his wife Julie.

Warren and Julie are retiring to the family farm to watch the grass grow, have the occasional glass of wine and enjoy the next phase of their lives together.

A community thanks and retirement function will be held in Goomeri Saturday 13th August at 06:00pm at the Goomeri Show Grounds pavilion Laird Street, Goomeri.

It will be a two course dinner (main and dessert) $20 per person plus a $5 per person door fee for a door prize and raffle. The money is all payable on the night (note - children’s prices still to be determined). Dinner is optional to those who would like to eat, however RSVP for catering purposes is greatly appreciated.

Local businesses in Goomeri will have further information and an RSVP form to be completed. Otherwise to RSVP please contact Trish Macarthur of the Goomeri Show Society on 4168 4023 or 0419 720 407.

For further details please contact Goomeri Police Station.Senior Constable James Weimar

BEEBOT LESSON FROM PREPS TO KINDY KIDS IN WONDAI

The Prep students at Wondai State School had some very excited visitors in the last week of school in Term 2. Kindy kids, staff and some parents from Mother Kates Early Learning Centre came to visit the Preppies for a few lessons on coding and robotics. Teachers Mrs Butler and Miss Hindmarsh directed the very eager Preppies to complete three rotation activities with a kindy buddy on how to program a little BeeBot robot.

Kindy kids pretended to be BeeBot robots and followed the verbal directions of their Preppie buddy to reach the flower. They also worked with their buddies on the iPad BeeBot app to program directions for the digital BeeBot through various levelled mazes. The final rotation was a mini competition to see which buddy pair could get their BeeBot robot to reach its little house. Throughout the hands on rotation activities, all the students were enhancing their language and numeracy skills by giving and following directions, using positional language and counting. They also strengthened their fine and gross motor skills. All the students had fun with the introductory lesson to coding and robotics and responded with enthusiasm and excitement.

Thanks to the generous donation from the Wondai State School P & C towards the exciting new coding and robotics resources for the new Technology and Resource Centre.

A 72 year old man had one hobby - he loved to fish. He was sitting in his boat the other day when he heard a voice say, ‘Pick me up.’ he looked around and couldn’t see anyone. He thought he was dreaming when he heard the voice say again, ‘Pick me up.’He looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a frog. The man said, ‘Are you talking to me?’ The frog said, ‘Yes, I’m talking to you. Pick me up, then kiss me; and I’ll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I’ll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous, because I will be your bride!’The man looked at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefully and placed it in his shirt pocket. The frog said, ‘What, are you nuts? Didn’t you hear what I said?’ I said, ‘Kiss me, and I will be your beautiful bride.’He opened his pocket, looked at the frog and said, ‘Nah. At my age, I’d rather have a talking frog.’

Kathy’s CommentsCouncil’s BudgetThe highlight of the budget this year was the decision to put more of our capital works money into gravel resheeting on our rural roads. I am pleased that the new Council has listened to the ratepayer’s concerns about roads. We will also be doing an external audit of the road operations to look at ways to improve our efficiency and productivity into the future. Marshlands Bridge on the Silverleaf Rd will be replaced and a side track is included in the project so the road will remain open while work is completed. Stonelands bridge will also be completed. There will be upgrades of paths and lighting in Murgon Rotary Youth Park and Railway Park toilet refurbishment in Proston. There are also funds for the redevelopment of the Murgon Cemetery. Council is partnering with the Murgon Tennis Club, Tennis Australia and the Department of Sport & Rec in a project to install lights and resurface the Murgon tennis courts. We also plan to install a new bathroom at Boondooma Hometead Caretakers Cottage. A really exciting project is the upgrades to Murgon, Nanango and Wondai Waste Water Treatment Plants to allow for Class A recycled water. This will be a great opportunity for some of the sporting clubs to work with Council to use recycled water rather than treated water which should be a more affordable option.Reserve Forces DayI would like to particularly congratulate Noel Selway and Wally Knight on this very special day for Wondai. I don’t think there are many opportunities anywhere else to pay tribute to our Reserve Forces so hats off to these men for organising this very worthwhile day to honour our Reserve Forces.Margaret Westerman’s FarewellI would like to pay tribute to this wonderful lady who has been an amazing asset to Proston as the librarian for many years. Margaret is not leaving Proston except to travel and I wish her well in her retirement. Margaret will be replaced by Julie Manning who has big shoes to fill but I know she will do an excellent job in her new role.Farmfest TripI am pleased that Council was able to organise a trip to Farmfest for our farmers through State Government Drought Relief Funding. I hopped on board one of the five buses that headed to Toowoomba for a day out. Thanks also to Agforce for sponsoring a free lunch. It was a great opportunity for our hard working farmers to spend the day with other South Burnett farmers on the bus trip as well as have a look around Farmfest. I have had great feedback about the trip and it would be good if we could somehow find a way to make this happen again into the future.Wondai Street SprintsI had the special privilege of officially opening this inaugural event. I think the whole community should be extremely proud of the success of the weekend. There were thousands of people and lots of interest. Some of us were lucky enough to get a lap in some very fast cars for a thrill of a lifetime!!National General AssemblyI had the privilege of travelling with Mayor Campbell to Canberra to join with other Mayors and Deputy Mayors at an

assembly to discuss current and future initiatives for Local Government at a national level. It was a great opportunity to advocate for the South Burnett and we made some really good contacts which we have followed up already in particular with the National Heavy Vehicle Transport Regulators and movements of livestock and freight in and out of our region.Purser’s Travel and CruiseIt is fantastic to see another business open in Murgon and I was pleased to help cut the ribbon to officially open the extensions. It was great to see a large crowd join to celebrate the success of the Dascombe family with this great new asset for Murgon and our region.Boondooma Homestead Scots in the BushThe 18th to the 21st of August is the celebration of everything Scottish including the history of the Homestead which was settled by three Scotsman. Make sure you put the date aside for an opportunity to hear the bagpipes, wear some tartan and sample a taste of haggis!!

Who was Mr Gorsky? Time to get foxes and wolves out of the hen

house, A little bit of wonderful trivia. On July 20th 1969, as commander of the Apollo

11 Lunar Module, Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. His first words after stepping on the moon, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Were televised to earth and heard by millions. But, just before he re-entered the lander, he made the enigmatic remark “Good luck, Mr Gorsky”.

Many people at Nasa thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival Soviet Cosmonaut, however upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs.

Over the years, many people questioned Armstrong as to what the ‘Good luck Mr Gorsky” statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled.

On July 5th 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida, while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old question about Mr Gorsky and this time he finally responded because Mr Gorsky had just died, so Neil Armstrong felt he could now answer the question.

Who was Mr Gorsky? In 1938, When Neil Armstrong was a kid in a

small mid-western town, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit the ball, which landed in his neighbours yard by their bedroom window. His neighbours were Mr and Mrs Gorsky.

As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs Gorsky shouting at Mr Gorsky,

Sex! You want Sex?! You’ll get Sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!

It broke the place up. TRUE OR FALSE (read the answer on page 46)

WHY CAN’T THE CHURCHES WORK TOGETHER?

Well, actually they do and the churches in our part of the South Burnett work together very well. The Barambah Ministers’ Association (BMA) meet together on the first Tuesday of each month and do a whole lot more than just drink coffee and eat scones. The BMA has representatives from most of the churches in Murgon, Wondai and the surrounding areas with 12-15 clergy and lay people meeting at a different church each month.

Last year the BMA brought the Wototo Children’s Choir to Murgon and this year will be bringing them to Wondai on 6th September; it worked with the Chaplains to bring Iron and Clay to Murgon to schools last year and will again have them come to Wondai and to Murgon at New Horizons Church on 29th July; and early next year there are plans to bring country singer, Steve Grace to Murgon for a community wide concert.

The BMA is actively working on running a young people’s program in September this year and then again just before school returns in 2017 that will be ongoing involving as many churches as can be involved; and to raise needed funds for school chaplaincy the BMA will be hosting a progressive dinner on 29th October visiting three different churches for nibbles, the main course and then dessert.

So if anybody suggests otherwise, the churches around this district really do work together and in real harmony.

Mr GorskyHowever, any doubts about the veracity of this legend are laid to rest by the NASA transcripts of the Apollo 11

mission, which record no such statement having been made by Armstrong. Armstrong himself said in late 1995 that he first heard the anecdote delivered as a joke by comedian Buddy Hackett in California. Source: Snopes.com
