Faculty Profile

Prof. John Grainger – Pro-Vice Chancellor / Executive Vice President

Prof. Grainger is the head of the Murdoch Dubai campus. He participates in the university’s strategic

planning process and is responsible for producing appropriate university operational plans. Prof. Grainger

has earned degrees in Psychology and Education prior to gaining an MBA and a Doctorate in Business

Administration from Murdoch University. He has extensive experience in almost all disciplines of business

education with particular expertise in Strategic Management, Leadership and Motivation, Entrepreneurship,

Educational Technology, Knowledge Management, Information Technology and Environmental Sustainability.

Johan Claasen – Academic Director - Media, Communication and Culture

Johan Claasen heads the school of Media, Communication and Culture at Murdoch Dubai. He coordinates

the courses and is in charge of developing and teaching the programs. Claasen has worked for over three

decades in print, radio and television news industry in South Africa, where he also completed his studies at

University of Johannesburg. Prior to joining MUISCD, Johan spent four years at academic institutions in

Cape Town and Stellenbosch where he lectured in Journalism, Media Studies, Communication Science and

Public Relations.

Daniel Adkins – Academic Director - Career Programs

Dan joined Murdoch University in November 2009 to teach in the MUPC and Business programs. Hailing

from the United States, Daniel Adkins taught IT professionals in various disciplines including project

management, quality management, and leadership skills. Over the course of 20 years, Adkins held numerous

management positions, including CIO and CEO. After founding an international school in India, he moved to the

UAE in 2007 to return to his passion, which is teaching. Dan holds an MBA from Herriot Watt University.

Murdoch University TOEFL Test Centre

• The tests is available only for students planning on enrolling in a foundational, undergraduate or postgraduate program at Murdoch University Dubai

• All candidates interested in taking the TOEFL exams with the University, must confirm their attendance on the given dates and payment for the papers must be made in advance by the candidates, (at least 2 days before the paper)

Requirements for Registration

• Original Passport (or an Official ID where Name, DOB, Photo and Signature are all there)

• Identification letter is required on letter head if the Passport or ID does not have all of this, or if there is any discrepancy - format provided

• Test Fee of AED 500

Advanced Standing at Murdoch University • Students may be eligible for Advanced Standing towards their Murdoch degree if they

have completed any other undergraduate or postgraduate studies at a recognized institution

• In order to determine if a student qualifies for advanced standing towards his/her

Murdoch degree, the student would need to provide the following: • Original academic transcripts/statement of results • Detailed course description of what the student studied within each relevant

individual subject of prior studies including learning objectives and outcomes, and textbooks for each unit completed. A copy of prior institution's handbook unit descriptions or a subject's course outline is usually sufficient. Note: Names and codes of the unit descriptions should be exactly the same as the names and codes of the units on the academic transcript

• A breakdown of the assessment and grading scheme for each unit • Examination paper for each unit (if possible) Please note: Transfer students may need to be of good academic standing at their previous university

Murdoch Dubai Foundation Program • The Murdoch Dubai Foundation Program (MDFP), equivalent to Year 12, provides guaranteed entry into

the first year of all Murdoch University bachelor degree courses

• The course is conducted over:

• Two 14-week teaching periods • There are 10 class hours per week in each of the three subjects, resulting in 30 class hours per week • Students complete six units which provide a total of 720 class hours

Documents for Student Visa

Visa Sponsorship Student will need to fill up the application for Student Entry Permit, attaching relevant documents and paying the applicable fee. In order to make an application for a visa, students need the following: • Student entry permit: a student entry permit must be completed and submitted with each application (form provided by MUISCD) • Passport copies: four photocopies must be submitted with each application •12 recent passport size photos • Student enrollment contract • Previous academic transcripts • Proof of sufficient funds: a bank statement showing sufficient funds more than AED 30,000. If the proof of funds is from a company, then a letter indicating sponsorship willingness must be submitted. Note: payment of tuition and any other extras such as hostel and book fees do not contribute to the AED 30,000.

Student Visa General Visa Regulations

• Students on a residency permit are not permitted to work for any employer within or outside the

TECOM zone • All students on Dubai International Academic City visas must attend an International Student Orientation day that will be held in September • Mandatory medical insurance unless students provide proof of existing medical insurance within

the UAE • Jawaz card is mandatory for all students • The cautionary deposit is refundable to sponsored students after cancellation of visa, and

deduction of all outstanding dues • Emirates ID card is compulsory for all the sponsored students

• Only full time students can be granted a student visa

• Visas are only valid for one year

• All students applying for a Dubai International Academic City student visa and are enrolled or have

been admitted into an undergraduate program shall not exceed the age of 25 • The only exceptions are those students enrolled in a postgraduate program or graduate programs

Student Visa FAQ’s • Is a fixed deposit acceptable?

Yes, provided it has more than AED 30,000 (+ Financial responsibility letter)

• Is a current account acceptable?

Yes, provided it has more than AED 30,000 (+ Financial responsibility letter) • Is a savings account acceptable? Yes, provided it has more than AED 30,000 (+ Financial responsibility letter) • Is a overdraft account acceptable? • If a loan has been taken to pay the education, do you require the Loan disbursement letter or the Loan

Approval letter? The GSO does not require any of those letters. The Student hub of DIAC would only require the bank statement that shows sufficient funds (AED 30,000) with a financial responsibility letter, or a sponsor letter from the employer, or from the university (i.e. if the university provides a student with a study loan, then the University provides a bank statement to the student hub). The authorities (GSO, Immigration) do not interfere with student loans (tuition or others) and do not restrict them as long as the student hub approves the visa application

Yes, the student applies for an MBA trainee visa (at the initial time of application), normal student visa cannot be converted later on to a trainee visa A lady cannot sponsor her husband • Can a MBA student sponsor his wife and kids? Subject to immigration approval, security checks and remaining balance of visa

• Can the wife work? Yes, the student’s wife can work provided she obtains a NOC from her husband
