1 of 8 Part Series On July 2, 1929 a tragic and terrible murder occurred that shook Tama County and the surrounding area to their roots. The murder includes a broken safe, a wrecked vehi- cle, brown ladies gloves, rumored wealth, and bonds. Whiskey Bottom is located west of Tama-Toledo. Scott Rouse, a 76 year old resident, owned 96 1/299 acres of land a distance away from the Meskwaki Indian Settle- ment; Rouse was a friend of the Indians. Rouse was found Tuesday July 5, 1929 and immediately the doctor was called. Sheriff E.O. (Manny) Harris, Deputy Lichty, and County Attorney Kepford worked to solve the case, but they were unsuccessful. Rouse’s brother, Major Philip Rouse, lived in the local County Home. Scott Rouse and his father had been known as the local bootleggers, and that was how this small valley near Montour was named. All of those living in and around Whiskey Bottom had gone to Philip Rouse, father of the victim.
