SELECT COMMENTS
Select Comments about Jason Miller from important members of the national and international art community:
Foreword about Jason Miller’s paintings and drawings by renown poet Sarah Arvio, 2014
A curious, spidery creature dances or swims or floats through every one of these gorgeously obsessive paintings and drawings: a kind of flamingo octopus or a flaming sun or a long-finned fish. What is it? A kind of dancing alter ego? A figment of Miller¹s imagination living in imagination’s mansion. Obsession is often the way to artistic truth.
—Sarah Arvio, 2014
Excerpted from The Oxford American, Visual South Issue 76, March 2012
“The most prosaic things to write about Jason Miller are that he is a native of Memphis and earned his MFA in photography in 2010 at the University of Memphis. Those words will not prepare you to encounter either the man or his work. Jason Miller is a photographer, poet, philosopher, muralist, performance artist and multimedia visual impresario extraordinaire and force of nature. His work

incorporates his own and appropriated layered and colliding images that critique and celebrate art, religion and contemporary life as it falls under his restless and cheerful scrutiny.”
—Leslie Luebbers, Director, Art Museum of the University of Memphis
Excerpted from Art Takes Swipe At Corporatism, Go Memphis: Commercial Appeal, May 27th, 2011
“The most terrifying work in the exhibition, perhaps because it is the simplest contrivance, is, again, the diptych called "Corporate Communion." In the panel on the right, a "businessman-priest," glowing eerily blue like a demon and surrounded by smoke, offers a communion wafer that is really the bright red and now ubiquitous Target logo. On the left side, a young woman, also glowing blue and with her hair spread behind her as if it were a bursting galaxy, takes the Target "eucharist" on her tongue and appears to gag and choke. No corporate names are necessary nor jangling maelstrom of pop culture images; here, less is far, far more.”
—Fredric Koeppel, Art Critic, Courtesy of The Commercial Appeal
Excerpted from the essay Remarks on Two of Jason Miller’s Photographs , 2009
“The spires of a gothic cathedral – St. Stephen’s in Vienna – are fading into oblivion in the background of a single picket of an iron fence, reminding us that those traceries of gothic masonry are actually intimidating, menacing, aggressive.”
—Till-Holger Borchert, Chief Curator Groeninge Museum and Arentshuis, Bruges

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
An important fundamental of my teaching philosophy is to create artworks alongside my students. During class critique we discuss all the pieces we have made, including my piece. Students are instructed

 of 27 29
that the purpose of criticism is to better our selves and evolve as artists, and never to be mean. We each are encouraged to find ways to make works stronger both conceptually and esthetically.
The importance of ones overall live habits and self-discipline are discussed as part of a professional practice component, which is incorporated into curriculum. Knowledge of art history is urged in balance with a current assessment of contemporary artists. Cross-disciplinary study is encouraged so that architecture, film, and music are weighed along side sculpture, painting, and photography. Digital Art and new media is important today for artists, and my students are prompted to research substrates and mediums both traditional and alternative, and to note new advancements in materials that help artists make art in new ways that were not previously available to artists even twenty years ago.
Core courses focus on tapping into ones imagination in order to create conceptual depth and interesting original content, but there is also a strong focus on the selecting the most suitable tools for articulating and communicate ideas. Presentation is stressed in great importance because the way a piece of art is communicated to the viewer in its final materialized form is critical to its success or failure. Presentation includes lighting and choosing the appropriate type of lighting, is the piece internally or frontally lit, will the artwork require a power supply, selecting the best substrate and medium for a particular idea, hardware, labeling and titling, as well as the environment.
Punctuality and professionalism is held in high standard for all official class meeting for each course, and there is a rigid yet flexible essay portion to each course. However, the primary focus for studio art is to make art and increasingly make stronger art both in concept and presentation.
Students are offered extra credit through researching art within their immediate community and familiarizing themselves with arts organizations, galleries, and museums. Networking and learning from contemporaries is encouraged by having students attend lectures and art openings. Students are encouraged to think outside of the box of classicalism and to experiment widely with ideas before committing, but to always learn through the action of making art. Students understand that to experiment means to risk failure and that no great artwork is made without some form of calculated risk involved.
I want my students to ping off one another in more ways than simply through critiques, and one method I have learned that works well is have them work on periodic collaborative assignments between core assignments. Examples of collaborative assignments for advanced courses include producing an art exhibition that involves making the artworks, coordinating with all artists involved, electing a curator from the class, selecting a space or venue, promoting the event, and critiquing the final exhibit presentation from how it is lit, hung, labeled, and promoted in addition to the integrity of the artworks shown. An example of a collaborative assignment for a foundations level or entry level course is to make an artwork or performance piece through coordinating and delegating roles to ones classmates so that each essential problem is solved and the art piece gets made.

Critiquing involves discussing materials, lighting considerations, and other presentation considerations ranging from the titling of the work to how it functions singularly or within the collective of a series. Questions asked include how to address sound and audiovisual components if applicable.
Courses involve lectures that incorporate art history and the study of contemporary artists of all mediums ranging from new experimental media to the classical mediums. A hands on approach to teaching technical skills and the proper use of artistic tools and applications is incorporated int the curriculum with rigor.
The invitation of periodic guest speakers help open the class to new dialogue and guest critics are invited to class critiques.
All students are invited to contribute to course dialogue, each in his or her own way.
My philosophy is to never push a student against his or her own natural inclinations, but rather to learn each student’s unique differences, which are connected to their strengths. Often students willingly break out of their safe comfort zones and excel into new experimentation when first respected and accepted for what they initially bring.
