4 Foreword
After a two-year hiatus, the FIFA Club World Cup returned
to Japan at the end of 2011 as once again seven club sides
battled to be crowned club world champion of the year.
In 2010, the dominance of Europe and South America
was rocked when TP Mazembe of Congo DR defeated SC
Internacional of Brazil to reach the fi nal.
In 2011, the mercurial talents of FC Barcelona were
expected to challenge strongly for the title, but no one who sat
down ahead of the fi nal against Santos FC would have expected
Pep Guardiola’s players to put on such a breath-taking display
of footballing excellence. A 4-0 fi nal victory was achieved by
retaining 71% of possession during the game, an incredible
statistic in modern-day football, especially when one considers
the collective talent of the opposition from Brazil.
For any neutral football supporter in the stadium, any
prospective young player watching on television or any coach
analysing the game, the fi nal will live long in the memory as
football at its purest.
However, the tournament was not just all about
Barcelona. Prior to the fi nal, other records were set. Auckland
City, like FC Barcelona, made their third appearance in the
competition since its inception, and for the New Zealanders’
Daniel Koprivic, it was his fourth appearance in the Club World
Cup. Sadly for the Kiwis, the challenge of J.League champions
Kashiwa Reysol was too strong, with two goals in four minutes
just before half-time in the opening match putting paid to their
hopes.
Kashiwa Reysol only sealed the domestic championship
six days before the opening match, with the league kick-off
having been delayed due to the tragic earthquake and tsunami
that hit Japan in March. Their players displayed no visible signs

of tiredness, however, winning their quarter-fi nal against
CF Monterrey of Mexico before fi nally bowing out to Santos
in the semi-fi nal. A penalty shoot-out defeat to Al-Sadd of Qatar
meant the host team fi nished the competition in fourth place,
still a highly impressive accomplishment just twelve months after
winning the Japanese second division.
Espérance of Tunisia also played some very attractive
football in their two matches but returned home without a
victory, narrowly losing both their matches 2-1 to Al-Sadd and
3-2 to Monterrey, the Mexicans displaying their qualities to seal
fi fth place.
When the curtain came down on the 2011 competition,
for some confederations, qualifi cation for the 2012 edition, also
to be held in Japan, was already well under way.
FC Barcelona’s victory was the fi fth consecutive European
triumph at the FIFA Club World Cup. We are already looking
forward to returning to Japan next December to see some more
top-quality football, and to see whether a club from another
continent can wrestle the crown from Europe’s grasp.

No

Afrikameister Espérance (Tunesien) bot in seinen beiden

After a two-year stint in the United Arab Emirates, the FIFA
Club World Cup moved back to Japan for the event’s eighth
edition. Between 8 and 18 December 2011, the champions
of the six confederations were joined by Japanese
champions Kashiwa Reysol in the quest for the title of
world champion. The fi nal pitted the continental champions
of South America, Santos Futebol Clube, against their
European counterparts, FC Barcelona, the pre-tournament
favourites. It was an impressive match that was billed as a
battle between Messi and Neymar, and more than 66,000
fans fl ocked to the International Stadium in Yokohama to
witness FC Barcelona lift their second world club crown.
Play-off for the quarter-fi nals
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) v. Auckland City FC (NZL) 2-0 (2-0)
In the opening match, the J.League champions convincingly
defeated the winners of the OFC Champions League. In the
fi rst half, Reysol, tactically disciplined and effi ciently using
both wings to attack, dominated their opponents and took
the lead after 37 minutes when Tanaka (18), after spinning
away from two defenders, shot inside the goalkeeper’s near
post. Just three minutes later, young Kudo (19) doubled his
team’s advantage by smashing the ball into the net after a
rebound off a post following a free kick from the right. In
the second half, both teams had goalscoring opportunities
but were unable to convert their chances, leaving Auckland
City FC to exit the tournament after just one match.
Quarter-fi nals
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) v. Club de Fútbol Monterrey (MEX)
1-1 a.e.t. (1-1, 0-0), 4-3 PSO
On match day 2, Kashiwa Reysol beat Monterrey 4-3 on
penalties after 120 minutes of quality football ended in
a draw. From the very fi rst whistle, the Mexicans created
several chances and came close to an opener. Slowly but
surely, however, Kashiwa Reysol came into the game and
they scored after 53 minutes when Leandro Domingues
(10), assisted by Tanaka, smashed an acrobatic volley beyond
Monterrey’s goalkeeper. Reysol’s joy did not last long though
because just fi ve minutes later, Humberto Suazo (26) slid
the ball into the roof of the net from Cesar Delgado’s (19)
right-footed cross. Both teams then demonstrated fl uid, fast
football but were unsuccessful at scoring. The game logically
drifted towards extra time and then to a dramatic penalty
shoot-out won by Reysol.
Espérance Sportive de Tunis (TUN) v. Al-Sadd Sports
Club (QAT) 1-2 (0-1)
From the beginning to the end, Espérance were the
dominant force, both in successful ball possession and also
in regaining the ball, especially in their opponent’s half.
11FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
However, Al-Sadd, who spent the majority of the match
defending, did not allow Espérance to profi t from their
domination. After 34 minutes, Al-Sadd took a surprise lead
when Al Khalfan (14) headed home after the Espérance
goalkeeper parried Keita’s (12) powerful right-foot strike.
Fifteen minutes later, Al-Sadd put the African champions
in even more trouble by doubling their advantage through
Koni (21). Espérance were in desperate need of a goal,
which duly came thanks to Darragi (10), who fl oated the
ball into the net from a dangerous free-kick. The game then
became a nervous affair as Espérance continued to press,
but ultimately their attempts were in vain.
Match for fi fth place
Club de Fútbol Monterrey (MEX) v. Espérance Sportive
de Tunis (TUN) 3-2 (2-1)
Monterrey secured a deserved 3-2 win over Espérance in the
match for fi fth place. The Mexicans emerged as the more
accomplished team despite the fact that it was the African
champions who took the lead after 31 minutes when Yannick
Ndjeng (15), an athletic and powerful striker, drilled a terrifi c
right-foot fi nish into the net after outmuscling two Monterrey
centre-halves in the penalty box. The CONCACAF champions
continued to press, however, and their efforts to equalise
12 Story of the tournament
were rewarded after 39 minutes by Hiram Mier (21), who
capitalised on havoc in the Espérance defence following a
quickly taken corner to volley the ball into the bottom left-
hand corner. Five minutes later, Espérance’s goalkeeper was
beaten for the second time by Aldo De Nigris (9), who headed
home powerfully at the near post. Monterrey’s domination
was confi rmed for the third time in the second half, just a few
minutes after the teams had returned to the pitch from the
dressing rooms, when Jesús Zavala (17) doubled their lead.
After 75 minutes, Espérance were given a glimmer of hope
after Khaled Mouelhi (19) converted a penalty but Monterrey
successfully kept the Tunisians at arm’s length.
Semi-fi nals
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) v. Santos Futebol Clube (BRA)
1-3 (0-2)
Santos defeated Kashiwa Reysol in spectacular style by
scoring a trio of magnifi cent goals in this thrilling semi-fi nal.
In the 19th minute, Neymar (11) opened the scoring after
eluding his marker and curling a sumptuous shot into the
top left-hand corner. Five minutes later, Santos doubled their
lead through Borges (9), who spun away from his opponent
and lashed a right-foot drive into the top right-hand corner.
The hard-working Japanese players were not disheartened,
however, and their patience was rewarded in the 54th
minute when Hiroki Sakai (4) managed to drag his team
back into contention with a spectacular header following
an outswinging cross from Jorge Wagner (15). Santos then
hit back and sealed their victory through Danilo (4) in the
63rd minute. After winning a free kick 25 metres from goal,
Danilo curled the ball perfectly around the wall and inside
the post. Kashiwa refused to give up and fashioned some
good chances to score but in the end they could not prevent
the CONMEBOL champions, a team of awesome attacking
skills, from reaching the fi nal.
Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT) v. FC Barcelona (ESP) 0-4 (0-2)
As widely expected, the European champions coasted
through to the FIFA Club World Cup fi nal on the back of a
convincing 4-0 victory that was overshadowed by a serious
injury to striker David Villa (7), who suffered a broken leg
towards the end of the fi rst half. Barcelona, led by Lionel
Messi (10), pinned their Qatari opponents in their own half
from the outset, obliging them to defend very deep and
make mistakes. The fi rst goal came after one such mistake
when the Al-Sadd defence gifted Adriano (21) an easy
25th-minute opener. Totally dominating the match, Barcelona
doubled their advantage, again through Adriano, in the 43rd
minute when the Brazilian rifl ed an excellent left-foot shot
beyond the helpless Al-Sadd goalkeeper, Saqr (18). In the
second half, Barcelona became even more infl uential and in
the 64th minute, after a superb defence-splitting pass from
Messi, Seydou Keita (15) fl icked a left-foot shot beyond the
advancing Saqr. With nine minutes remaining, Maxwell (19)
13FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
added a fourth with a powerful left-foot shot just inside the
near post. In the end, Al-Sadd were unable to put up much
resistance against a Barcelona side that was evidently in an
entirely different class.
Match for third place
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) v. Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT)
0-0, 3-5 PSO
Al-Sadd secured third place at the FIFA Club World Cup
Japan 2011 by winning 5-3 on penalties after the play-off
ended in a goalless draw. Despite the fact that this was
Kashiwa’s fi fth game in little over a fortnight, there was
almost no evidence of fatigue in their performance and
determination. In the fi rst half, backed by their supporters,
the J.League champions energetically tried to attack,
with Al-Sadd content to hit them on the break when the
opportunity arose. The Qatari side were dangerous on the
counter throughout the whole match, with their active duo
Kader Keita and Mamadou Niang (9) both thwarted by the
Japanese goalkeeper’s agility. Chances were at a premium
in the second half, but Kashiwa Reysol remained the more
potent attacking threat. However, with the two keepers
in a defi ant mood, the outcome of the match could not
be decided in 90 minutes. As there was no extra time, the
game went straight to penalties and it was Al-Sadd who
ultimately took the honours.
Final
Santos Futebol Clube (BRA) v. FC Barcelona (ESP)
0-4 (0-3)
Barcelona delivered a veritable football master class and
were crowned world champions after a brilliant 4-0 victory
over Santos in front of a 68,166 crowd in Yokohama’s
International Stadium. From the very beginning to the end
of the fi nal, nothing could stem the tide of the European
champions’ attacks and collective team play. After 17
minutes, the fi rst step towards dismantling Santos was
predictably taken by Messi, who worked a delightful one-
two with Xavi (6) before delicately chipping the ball over
the advancing goalkeeper. Barcelona continued to look
unstoppable and their second goal came in the 24th minute
through Xavi, who fi red home a half-volley from 15 metres
after bringing down a defl ected Dani Alves (2) cross. Just
before half-time, another spectacular move ended in a goal
for Fàbregas (4). The Catalans began the second half in the
same fantastic fashion. They kept coming and, although
Santos enjoyed a little more possession, Pep Guardiola’s men
continued to dominate and had several clear-cut goalscoring
opportunities. With just eight minutes remaining, they
completed the rout when the outstanding Messi, the
player of the tournament, provided a fi ne fi nishing touch
after skipping round the goalkeeper. As the fi nal whistle
sounded, there was no doubt whatsoever that Barcelona are
unquestionably the best team in the world.

Compte rendu
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Auckland City FC (NZL) 2-0 (2-0)
1-1 a.p. (1-1, 0-0), 4-3 t.a.b.
15FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
marquer. Des prolongations ont été jouées mais aucune
équipe n’a pris le dessus, et ce n’est qu’aux tirs au but que
Reysol a pu décrocher sa qualifi cation.
Espérance Sportive de Tunis (TUN) – Al-Sadd Sports
Club (QAT) 1-2 (0-1)
droit.
16 Story of the tournament
Demi-fi nales
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Santos Futebol Clube (BRA)
1-3 (0-2)
Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT) – FC Barcelone (ESP) 0-4 (0-2)
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT)
0-0 (3-5) t. p.
17FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
Finale
Santos Futebol Clube (BRA) – FC Barcelone (ESP)
0-4 (0-3)

torneo
Autores: Dragan Stojkovic y Edgar Streltsov
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Auckland City FC (NZL) 2-0 (2-0)
fútbol fl uido y vertiginoso, aunque no consiguieron mover
19FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
presión no obtuvo recompensa alguna.
Semifi nales
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Santos Futebol Clube (BRA)
1-3 (0-2)
a tres espectaculares tantos.
Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT) – FC Barcelona (ESP) 0-4 (0-2)
20 Story of the tournament
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT)
0-0, 3-5 t. p.
Final
Santos Futebol Clube (BRA) – FC Barcelona (ESP) 0-4 (0-3)

ost. Im Finale standen sich wie erwartet Südamerikameister
Santos Futebol Clube und UEFA-Champions-League-Sieger
FC Barcelona gegenüber. Beim viel zitierten Duell Messi –
Neymar erlebten über 66 000 Zuschauer im International
Stadium in Yokohama eine Sternstunde des FC Barcelona.
Spiel um den Einzug ins Viertelfi nale
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Auckland City FC (NZL) 2:0 (2:0)
Minute in
Führung. Tanaka (18) liess gleich zwei Verteidiger stehen
Viertelfi nale
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Club de Fútbol Monterrey (MEX)
1:1 n. V. (1:1, 0:0), 4:3 n. E.
22 Story of the tournament
einzuschiessen brauchte.
Halbfi nale
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Santos Futebol Clube (BRA)
1:3 (0:2)
Furios zog Santos ins Finale ein. Ein Treffer war schöner
als der andere. Das Spektakel begann in der 19. Minute,
Anschluss erzielte. Aber schon neun Minuten später stellte
Danilo (4) den alten Vorsprung wieder her. Seinen Freistoss
Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT) – FC Barcelona (ESP) 0:4 (0:2)
Bein vom Platz musste.
3:0. Neun Minuten vor Schluss erzielte Maxwell (19) aus
spitzem Winkel mit links noch das 4:0. Al-Sadd hatte nie den
Hauch einer Chance, zu überlegen spielte Barça.
Spiel um Platz drei
Kashiwa Reysol (JPN) – Al-Sadd Sports Club (QAT)
0:0, 3:5 n. E.
23FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
In
Finale
Santos Futebol Clube (BRA) – FC Barcelona (ESP)
0:4 (0:3)
Heber in Führung brachte. Barça zauberte weiter und konnte
in der 24. Minute erneut jubeln.

Once again, the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan was a fi tting
way to bring the curtain down on an eventful year of
international football that was blessed with extraordinary
performances and outstanding players. This year’s Club
World Cup fi nal was again between the champions of South
America and the UEFA Champions League winners – just
as it has been in every FIFA Club World Cup fi nal so far bar
2010. This year’s fi nalists, Santos FC and FC Barcelona, both
cruised through their semi-fi nals to claim their rightful place
in the fi nal.
FC Barcelona, the cream of the crop
Perhaps the most signifi cant observation to be gleaned from
this competition was the fact that the gulf in class between
the two fi nalists was more apparent than ever before. It
is probably not accurate to speak of a general difference
between Europe and South America – even though we
have to go back to 2006 to fi nd the last non-European
team to win the trophy: Brazil’s SC International against FC
Barcelona no less – but rather of a gulf in class between FC
Barcelona and all other teams. We will look at the reasons
for that observation after evaluating the other teams in the
tournament.
Oceania representatives Auckland City fi nished in seventh
place after losing to host team Kashiwa Reysol, which meant
that they were unable to build on their good performance
in 2009 when they came fi fth. Nevertheless, it is undeniable
that football is making great progress in the OFC region,
as proven by the continued development of New Zealand,
whose senior national team avoided defeat at the 2010 FIFA
World Cup™ before their U-17 counterparts once again
made it through to the knock-out stages of the U-17 World
Cup in Mexico in 2011. The basic principles of modern
football – constructive build-up play and good defensive
organisation – are clear for all to see in their play. At the
same time, at these tournaments teams have much less
time and space in which to play than they do in their local
leagues, which makes the difference in quality all the more
noticeable.
The African representatives, Espérance Sportive de Tunis
of Tunisia, are slightly more advanced in that respect. In all
of their games, Espérance were at least the equal of their
opponents in respect of statistics such as ball possession,
pass completion and shots on goal. The Tunisians are a very
good footballing team with excellent individual players, but
27FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
they probably still need to learn how to combine quality with
effi ciency, which is backed up by some statistics from their
fi rst match against Al-Sadd: 22 shots on goal to Al-Sadd’s
7, 60% possession to Al-Sadd’s 40%, but still the North
Africans lost the game as they were unable to convert their
ability into goals. This lack of effi ciency also cost them dearly
in the match for fi fth place when, despite having
13 shots on goal and dominating the second half, they
only managed to score a consolation goal, which was
actually from the penalty spot. However, as the youngest
team in the entire competition, Espérance undoubtedly have
potential. If young players such as midfi eld maestro Darragi
(24 years old), winger Msakni (21) and striker Ndjeng (21)
continue to develop, and if Espérance manage to keep
the team together, they could well become an African
powerhouse.
Fifth place went to Mexico’s CF Monterrey, representing
North and Central America and the Caribbean
(CONCACAF). Their quarter-fi nal encounter with Japanese
hosts Kashiwa Reysol was an evenly balanced affair that
was only decided in favour of the Japanese in extra time.
The statistics for the game also show that the teams
were indeed well matched. The longer the game went
on, however, the harder it became for Monterrey to keep
playing their demanding short-passing game or keep
applying fast, intensive pressure after losing the ball. It
was obvious that fatigue had started to set in, as proven
by the ball possession statistics as the two teams enjoyed
an equal share of the ball during normal time but Kashiwa
Reysol enjoyed 60% to Monterrey’s 40% in extra time. In
the end, however, Kashiwa came out on top in a penalty
shoot-out, where there is always a fi ne line between victory
and defeat. The Mexicans bounced back quickly in the
match for fi fth place thanks to a mixture of great effi ciency,
fast and tactically astute transitions, and precise set pieces.
Ultimately, it was their greater experience that helped them
win the day, as they had the benefi t of seasoned players
all through the team in the shape of goalkeeper Orozco,
midfi eld playmaker Pérez, and strikers Suazo and Delgado,
who called upon their know-how to see off the young
Tunisians in another close match to secure fi fth place for
Monterrey.
Kashiwa Reysol, meanwhile, became the fi rst hosts to
reach the semi-fi nals since 2008. In 2009 and 2010, the
home teams bade the tournament an early farewell, but in
Japan, there was an Asian showdown in the match for third
28 Technical and tactical analysis
place, which clearly shows that Asian football is on the up.
Furthermore, Japanese victories at the FIFA Women’s World
Cup Germany™ and the AFC Asian Cup 2011 in Qatar,
coupled with the Japan U-17 side’s impressive showing at
the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2011 in Mexico, would appear to
suggest that Japan are the dominant force in Asia. Kashiwa,
for their part, improved from game to game. They were
well organised throughout the team and were composed
when building attacks, but they also enjoyed a great deal
of possession and attacked well down the wings. Most
importantly, Kashiwa dominated possession in all of their
games, particularly in their opponents’ half of the pitch,
where they also won the ball back more often than their
opponents. They even had the lion’s share of the play in
their defeats to Santos FC and Al-Sadd. Their constant
pressing after losing possession created problems for many
opponents, not least because the players were very fi t even
though they were coming off the back of a long season.
Kashiwa Reysol were worthy representatives of the Japanese
hosts and can be very proud of fi nishing fourth, especially
as they only missed out on third place in a penalty shoot-
out. Their outstanding players were young full-back Sakai,
playmaker Leandro and the tireless striker Tanaka.
Al-Sadd were able to underline their dominance of Asian
football in 2011 by overcoming Kashiwa in the match
for third place. Their main quality was undoubtedly their
effi ciency. Al-Sadd, who fi elded a blend of local young talent
and experienced foreign stars such as central defender Lee
(Korea Republic), full-back Belhadj (Algeria) and strikers
Niang (Senegal) and Keita (Côte d’Ivoire), were never
actually fully in control of any of their matches. They were
compact and energetic in defence and very dangerous
at set pieces, but they also relied on long balls to launch
fast transitions into attack, which meant that they were
seldom in possession for any signifi cant period of time. This
obviously meant that goalscoring opportunities were at a
premium (Espérance had 22 shots to Al-Sadd’s 7), but the
Qataris were very effi cient in converting the chances that
did come their way, which can presumably be put down to
the individual quality of their more experienced players, who
were involved in all of Al-Sadd’s goals from open play and
29FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
also stepped up to the plate in the penalty shoot-out against
Kashiwa.
South America and Europe
For many, the fi nal promised to be a showdown between
Neymar and Lionel Messi. Unfortunately, it turned out to
be an unfair battle as seldom has a fi nal been so one-sided.
Having said that, Santos FC also have an abundance of
talent and were a danger to every opponent thanks to
their composure while in possession. In the fi nal, however,
there was a major gulf in quality, as shown by the statistical
data. FC Barcelona’s game, which is all about retaining
possession, fi nding angles and tiki-taka, in other words
keeping the ball moving all over the pitch, was refl ected in
their 70% possession. They also completed 839 passes to
Santos’ 208. The fact that 82% of Barcelona’s passes reached
their intended target also showed that Santos rarely had
the ball, which meant that they were at a disadvantage not
only on the pitch, but also mentally: although they were
involved in the match, they were at best passively involved
as they were constantly chasing the ball and as soon as they
had it, they invariably lost it again straight away. Barça’s
success was based upon quickly regaining the ball after
losing it. It goes without saying that even Barcelona squander
possession from time to time, for example in dribbles by stars
such as Messi, Iniesta or Dani Alves (99 in the fi nal) – but
everyone, from Messi and Xavi down to youngsters Thiago
and Fontas, was determined to win the ball back as quickly
as possible. Barcelona excelled in this respect, and 32% of
their tackles or interceptions to regain the ball were made in
their opponents’ half of the pitch, whereas for Santos this
fi gure was just 12%. Barça’s opponents therefore had no
time to build attacks at their leisure, and instead were put
under pressure immediately with almost no time to catch
their breath. Santos were, however, able to call upon the
class of players such as Neymar, Ganso and Borges to escape
these shackles and create the occasional chance, although
they were ultimately limited to two shots in the entire fi nal,
compared to Barcelona’s ten shots and four goals. Therefore,
while Santos had to rely upon the individual talent of their
players, there were many factors behind Barcelona’s success,
all of which, in the end, can be combined to explain their
superiority. First of all, they have a defi ned way of playing
and covering the pitch. Secondly, their three attacking
positions are always occupied. Thirdly, after losing possession,
Barça invariably regain the ball extremely quickly. And fi nally,
the individual quality of their players also plays a key role. The
objective data, coupled with the visual impressions, can only
lead to one conclusion:
FC Barcelona are currently the cream of the crop.

Technical and tactical analysis
31FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
32 Technical and tactical analysis
forme physiquement. Kashiwa Reysol a dignement repré-
33FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011

Autores: Jean-Paul Brigger y Christofer Clemens

35FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
36 Technical and tactical analysis
37FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
lona disparó diez veces a puerta, anotando cuatro tantos.

in Mexiko.
Technical and tactical analysis
39FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
grosser spielerischer Dominanz in der 2. Halbzeit nur noch
zum Anschlusstreffer – bezeichnenderweise per Strafstoss –
kamen.
So
hoher Effi zienz, taktisch geschicktem, schnellem Umschalten
und präzisen Standards jedoch zu rehabilitieren. Gerade in
40 Technical and tactical analysis
ben. Dank guter Organisation in allen Mannschaftsteilen,
terschiessen geschlagen geben musste.
41FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
lust.
winnen.
merpositionen waren stets besetzt.

FC Barcelona have a clear way of playing (tiki-taka,
circulating possession) and of covering the pitch. The
three attacking positions are always occupied. In contrast
to earlier years, however, it no longer matters who is up
front: it can be their nominal right-back, Dani Alves, just as
easily as Lionel Messi. Their style is not about the individual
types of player, but rather about the role that each player
has to carry out in his position. After losing possession,
Barça regain the ball extremely quickly. Various studies in
Europe have shown that, on average, whenever Barcelona
regain possession, 60% of the time it is within the fi rst fi ve
to seven seconds of losing the ball, which makes it virtually
impossible for their opponents to approach Barça’s goal,
especially as one in every three tackles or interceptions
to regain the ball are made in their opponents’ half of
the pitch, which gives opponents little time to compose
themselves. The Catalan side’s players also stand out on
account of their individual talent. Although Brazilians are
rightfully recognised as “kings of the dribble”, in the fi nal,
Santos FC only completed 26% of their 19 dribbles. FC
Barcelona, however, made the same number of dribbles but
completed 74% – primarily thanks to Lionel Messi. One of
the main reasons for the Brazilians’ low completion rate was
undoubtedly the ability of the Spanish defenders they were
up against, which begs the question: can only FC Barcelona
play this way, or is this the football of the future?

The FIFA Referees Committee appointed seven refereeing
trios for this competition: one from each confederation and
an additional local support/reserve trio from Asia.
The criteria for their appointment was that they:
• had to be elite referees in their confederation;
• had to be of an age that would allow them to offi ciate
at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, that is, they had
to have been born in 1969 or later.
All the referees and assistant referees passed the FIFA fi tness
test held in their confederations a few weeks before arriving
in Japan.
Upon arrival in Tokyo, all of the referees and assistant
referees participated in a variety of daily theoretical and
practical activities. The instructors on technical matters,
fi tness and psychology developed extensive theoretical and
practical preparation programmes. The main focus was also
placed on a technical-tactical approach to the participating
teams’ way of playing for the best understanding and
reading of the expected games. The match offi cials were
instructed to maintain their own personality and apply the
uniform interpretation of the Laws of the Game considering
their actual situation in action on the fi eld.
The daily training sessions took place with the assistance of a
youth football team who helped to set up match situations.
During the practical training sessions on the fi eld of play,
some of the exercises (e.g. offside situations) carried out by
the referees and assistant referees were recorded and their
decisions were instantly analysed on a screen adjacent to the
pitch and the exercises subsequently repeated at different
speeds and diffi culties.
Before the start of the competition, a referee instructor met
each of the participating teams. The sessions were attended
by all of the players and the technical staff, and they were
reminded of various aspects of the Laws of the Game and
informed about the instructions given to the referees. At the
end of the meeting, they were provided with multimedia
material for their own further study and later use. These
meetings were well received by all the participating teams
because, besides providing a uniform interpretation on the
Laws of the Game, it also brought players, coaches and
referees closer together.
During the competition, all eight matches were recorded
and the instructors selected important incidents that were
to be analysed with the referees. Consequently, general
debriefi ngs were held to analyse the major incidents and to
further prepare the referees for the upcoming matches in
the competition.

The refereeing delegation stayed at the Takanawa Prince
Hotel Sakura Tower in Tokyo, where they received excellent
hospitality and enjoyed good facilities, suitable meeting
rooms, a gym that met the needs of the referees, etc. In
addition, special mention should be made of the high
attention and professional support received from the Japan
Football Association and its partners, particularly also on
matters such as transport, logistics and different sports
facilities for the referees’ practical trainings with well-
prepared sparring football players.
The members of the Referees Committee participated in the
important role of assessor and in assisting the match offi cials
in the venues. Accordingly, they were responsible for FIFA
refereeing matters and supporting the referees’ needs for
the entire duration of their stay in the respective venues. A
technical instructor also assisted in carrying out the functions
as assessor given the match schedule and its related
preparatory meetings. Therefore, the committee members
and an instructor acted as assessors and were responsible for
assessing the performances of referees and assistant referees
during matches in the stadium.
The members of the Referees Committee, assessors and
instructors carefully monitored all performances of the
match offi cials, and in general their evaluations were very
positive. In summary, the refereeing of this competition was
generally successful.

confédération ;

instructores seleccionaran las acciones más determinantes;

57FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011
Die Schiedsrichterdelegation war im Takanawa Prince Hotel
Sakura Tower in Tokio untergebracht. Sie genoss dort eine
ausgezeichnete Betreuung und eine gute Infrastruktur samt
Sitzungszimmern, Fitnessraum mit geeigneten Geräten
etc.

In-competition doping control
Following the routine in-competition procedure as described
in the FIFA Anti-Doping Regulations 2011, two players per
team were randomly selected for doping control after each
of the eight matches to provide urine samples. Altogether,
32 samples were collected and analysed at the WADA-
accredited laboratory in Tokyo, Japan. None of these tests
returned a positive result, once more confi rming the success
of FIFA’s anti-doping strategy to keep the game clean.
Out-of-competition doping control
The FIFA Anti-Doping Unit used the FIFA Club World Cup

the results of which were used to provide baseline values for
a new procedure known as steroid profi ling.
Steroid profi les are intended to address the problem that
many of the substances used in doping occur naturally
within the human body. Detecting small increases in these
substances is made even more diffi cult by the fact that
“normal” levels can vary signifi cantly from one person
to another. Profi ling therefore takes a different approach,
comparing an individual’s test results against the historical
values of his or her previous results, rather than against
a single, absolute threshold. In this way, physicians can
pinpoint deviations in the individual’s biological markers
which might raise the suspicion of manipulation.
The results of the tests were analysed at the Swiss
Laboratory for Doping Analyses in Lausanne. The next
step will consist of carrying out a feasibility study to
analyse the testing procedure as well as the costs involved.
The initial fi ndings and experiences will be shared with
the confederations and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Rapport
médical
Auteur : Prof. Jiri Dvorak

Medizinischer
Bericht
Autor: Prof. Jiri Dvorak
Labor in Tokio (Japan) analysiert.
Dopinganalysen in Lausanne analysiert.
Kosten evaluiert. Die ersten Ergebnisse und Erfahrungen
werden dann den Konföderationen und der Welt-Anti-
Doping-Agentur zur Verfügung gestellt.
